Normally whenever someone does sci-fi, a common setting is outer space, and there's a good reason for that, we know almost nothing about space, thus we have greater freedom to make up our own stuff.
But something interesting I noticed is that of our entire ocean, which covers 70 percent of the entire planet, we've only explored 5 percent of it. Meaning there's a whole 95 percent of uncharted territory waiting to be explored.
Just think out loud here, what if there was a sci-fi adventure similar to a space epic, except the setting is underwater? I can picture sleek submarines, diving suits, cities encased in glass domes, bio-luminescent plant life and strange aquatic creatures that can be either friendly or hostile.
Now before you guys mention, I am aware that in a realistic scenario it would be more practical to just go out to space, not to mention the ocean might be polluted. The only way I counteract these problems is say that the future suggests Earth's population is exceeding the land mass (even though the planet itself is fine), and that we were so greedy with satellites that it was impossible to safely get any ship out of the atmosphere.
What do you guys think? Would you like to see sci-fi underwater epic?

SOMA is a pretty good underwater sci-fi, although not in a "space-opera" sort of way, though.

I didn't hate it either....was just pointing out it is the most epic attempt at an underwater sci-fi ( The Abyss aside ) that just winds up making you laugh.

What do you guys think? Would you like to see sci-fi underwater epic? You might want to check out the 90s TV show called Sea Quest DSV. You MIGHT like some of these underwater sci-fi/action/monster films: Creature From The Black Lagoon, Revenge of the Creature, The Creature Walks Among Us, It Came From Beneath the Sea, The Monster of Piedras Blancas, The Crater Lake Monster, The Abyss, Waterworld, Jaws, Jaws 2, Jaws 3, Jaws 4: The Revenge, Orca: The Killer Whale, The Giant Behemoth, Thunderball, and Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace. They all are on DVD and/or Blu-Ray some are better than others, but that is true of all things.

Like erm. Leviathan from ME? That's more like a giant monster of the deep, or Cthulhu... I meant more like the Hanar maybe, or various aliens from SW. I sort of liked the giant squid motif.

There's this flick that I last saw when it came out back in the late 90s that I barely remember what happened in it (other than it involved a sphere in the water). s19.postimg.org/e11w45uv7/sphere.jpg

OP, in terms of games, check out Aquanox 1 and 2, the sequels for Archimedian Dynasty (all on GOG these days). That's a pretty decent attempt to transfer a space game into an underwater setting. Also, one of my favorite SciFi stories involving the oceans is the book The Swarm by German writer Frank Schaetzing. Technically it takes place in a modern, rather than a real SciFi setting but there are definitely some SciFi components in that story and it's really well researched, too. Very much worth the read. There's this flick that I last saw when it came out back in the late 90s that I barely remember what happened in it (other than it involved a sphere in the water). This movie was based on a book by Michael Crichton. The book was very good and the movie stays pretty close to it as well. Though I will admit, it probably wasn't the best book to adapt into a movie as it was based a lot on how characters fel, tough stuff to get into a visual medium.
