It amuses me that a lot of people don't seem to find DA:I soundtrack all that memorable, when it's my favorite, and the one I find the most memorable, out of all three games.

It's not that it isn't memorable. It's hard to deny that the main theme for instance, journey to Skyhold, and such were extremely memorable. I think the problem for many people is that such moments were few and far between as most of DA:I was essentially mute.

I too really liked the bard songs, Sera and Enchanter songs in particular stand out. Hated the Orlesian theme with a passion. Beyond that, I can't remember a great deal of the music from the base game, so perhaps not as memorable as other games in the franchise and from other games in general.
In descent, I do remember the battle theme when fighting the darkspawn amidst the burning Thaig and found it pretty epic at the time. Trespasser had Solas theme which I also loved and find quite memorable.
Hit and miss by and large but what Bioware gets right with the music, it really gets right.
EDIT: Just hit youtube and many of the tracks are pretty awesome. I think it speaks to my absoption into the action taking place in the game during the times certain tracks were playing, that distracted me from the epic music. The tracks that occur during cutscenees I remember more clearly.

I think the problem for many people is that such moments were few and far between as most of DA:I was essentially mute. I actually liked the fact that there wasn't that much ambient music or music every single time you went into combat. Having the same music repeat over and over and over again makes me want to turn the music volume down. The only game that I loved to hear the combat music (and would actually pause the game to hear it) was Jade Empire.

I can't recall the music of DAO and DA II. The one that stood out for DAO was Leliana's song. For DAI, I find the music excellent though too sparse when it comes to combat. The only time the drums will beat is when a major takeover is happening, like taking Caer Bronach from the bandits at Crestwood. Sometimes there'll be the triumphant swell of victory (main theme) at the completion of a task but this occur very rarely.
The tracks for Descent and Trespasser is epic. The music in the former speaks of a forgotten memory, of severed ties and sacrifice. The latter, I find the music poignant, of mystery and conflict.

The main thing I'm getting from this thread is that I should have played the DLC, because apparently the music was fantastic.

I like the main/opening screen theme/The Dawn Will Come, because it instantly reminded me of this lovely piece of music, which apparently Billy Boyd wrote himself:
And also....THIS....BLEEPING...TRACK! When this music kicked in, during the HUGE battle in The Descent, OMG my nerves were lightning, and I was going for a EPIC battle:
And oh yeah, sitting there at the end, listening to this...wondering...HOLY CRAP NOW WHAT?

I have seen this exact complaint before. To me, it isn't that the music is "unforgettable" but simply that the music just completely melds into the game naturally. The original theme is indeed epic and the first time I heard it when booting up the game for the first time gave me some serious nerd chills. Same -and especially- goes for the song after haven is destroyed. That was such an epic moment and I would not want to dwarf it (no pun intended) in any way shape or form. As far as the music elsewhere in the game, I would say, yes, they could have filled more of the game up with music. That said, there were plenty of sound effects such as birds and animals and the like that it didn't really bother me at all. I will admit that the hissing wastes did seem a bit on the quiet side. But the thing I have noticed really is that a lot of the time if there is something in an area that is lacking, they make it up in some way elsewhere in that same location. That's just my opinion ofc, but its the way I actually feel. *shrug* I think, for those who like the OP didn't find the music very memorable, that point about it melding into the game probably plays a large part. Personally, I found the main theme to be meh and when Mother Giselle starts singing it along with the other Inquisition members, I always wish it was possible to skip. It crosses into the realm of melodramatic and corny. Of the Mother Giselle campfire sing-along version of the main theme and the one used when booting up the game, yeah.... non-lyric version is better by miles. Favourite is the "Once We Were" tavern song. While the lyrics are original, the melody is from a RL Irish tune ("The South Wind"). I like both the English and French version of Empress of Fire, but prefer the French more than the English version, somehow. And I don't even understand French... "Enchanter" and "Sera" are memorable in terms of melody, but I get about as annoyed as Sera about hearing another "Sera was never...".

The main thing I'm getting from this thread is that I should have played the DLC, because apparently the music was fantastic. If you liked DA:I, I do recommend you try out the DLCs. All three are worth your time. At least play Trespasser as it has huge importance for DA4 and it serves as the perfect epilogue for DA:I itself. A must have, really. Next to ME3 Citadel, easily the best BioWare's DLC. Jaws of Hakkon basically addresses most of the complaints people had about the base game's open maps: it's a large area with a coherent overarching story which sheds some light on the past, it has varied side quests, some rudimentary puzzles, and, what's most important for me, a lot of character interaction with various new characters you meet, something that was sorely lacking in the base game's optional maps. This DLC is essentially what DA:I maps should have been all along. Descent is probably the most skippable. It's an old-school corridor-like dungeon crawl with a lot of fighting and little character interaction, but it's fun in its own way if you like this sort of thing (and I do). Deep Roads look more amazing then ever, so it's worth playing if only for incredible fantasy visuals. It has a revelation at the end which doesn't really tell you much. Probably some kind of set-up for DA4. In essence: get Trespasser ASAP no questions asked. Get Jaws of Hakkon if you liked base DA:I experience and you'd like an improved version of it. Get Descent if you like hack&slash stuff and some background lore.

Either right before MEA comes out, or after I get bored of it after a run or two. Thanks for the info, though. I had always been meaning to play it again so I could use my DA:O and DAII saves anyway, since the first time I played I had lost my accounts, lol.

It's the fact that music plays in occasional 10 second blips rather than continuously. The only music I recognize is the music from the start menu, and the music playing during the Haven battle

To me the most outstanding music(aside from the main theme and journey to skyhold) come from the DLCs. Not sure if you've played it, but the Descent soundtrack brought so much gravitas and mystery to the deep roads that I never felt before(it is in the trailer to the DLC actually). And the emotions in the Trespasser DLC theme, you can NOT miss it when you play that part, absolutely not possible. I shudder to think how many Solasmancers cried when that music played.
Here is the Descent DLC trailer
I'll save you the experience of listening to the Dark Solas theme for the game. It is truly something else.

I'll save you the experience of listening to the Dark Solas theme for the game. It is truly something else. Yeah totally agree - the Dark Solas theme was probably one of the most memorable pieces of music in any game ever. It really made the final scene of Trespasser for me. I think that the music of DA in general is pretty ok. Standouts include Hawke Family Theme and the abovementioned Dark Solas Theme. The main themes of all three games are fine. EDIT: And almost forgot to say this: I'm Not Calling You a Liar in DA2 is an absolute tear-jerker.

I actually fell in love with the menu music of all three games. Sometimes reluctant to click into the game. The one of DAO was especially outstanding for me -- starting off with a bit of an elven touch, reminds you of Leliana's song, and wraps up with an epic motif for Ferelden. Inon Zur's musical style is kinda special though, so I can see why some may not love it. Oh and the credits music for DAO and DAII are both great as well. (I am the one, Rogue heart) Both are great examples of Zur's 'elven' music style. That for me was the identity of the earlier DA games. As great as the DAI compositions were, I kinda miss those music as well.

Thank you all for your opinions and contributions to my dumb thread, lol. I appreciate the recommendations and will be sure to try out the DLC myself so I can hear the music for myself (as well as experience the story). merlin217 I also really liked the title themes of all three games. Also, not really a part of the OST itself, but I really liked the end credit songs they picked out from Florence and 30 Seconds to Mars. I don't listen to the latter band anymore, but I used to really enjoy that song. Florence is still perfection though. Was stoked to hear her in FFXV last year.

Ah yes Florence's I'm Not Calling You A Liar can be so haunting after you just finished DA2. Though not 100% sure that 'this is war' suited the high fantasy setting all that well, at least not to my personal taste. It makes a good MV though, so decent for the purpose of marketing.

Are you sure you don't have the 'no music/no party banter'-bug? I used to wonder why there was no music in this game but that turned out to be a bug.
As for the soundtrack, I love it. The main theme always gives me goosebumps and I always need to sing along with the bards.

People might be interested to know that I bought Inquisition again. Played it over the weekend, and it's actually a bit more entertaining than I remember it being. Maybe I was just in the mood for it, Idk.
My comment on the music stands, though, and I'm a little disappointed that that is the case. Although it's not so much a lack of good songs, so much as it is the fact that, like others have said, music literally NEVER plays. The game is so silent 90% of the time, and when there is music, in generally only lasts for about 30 seconds.
I haven't moved onto the DLC yet, but I just took Skyhold, so I'm making progress. I won't be playing 'til this upcoming weekend, but I'll probably post my thoughts on the matter again if anything changes or anyone cares.

I sit here mystified. I feel like the music in DAI was easily the best of the entire series. DAO's stood out too much, DA2's was sometimes very nice and other times cheesy (particularly in combat), and in DAI... no cheese, just ambient tracks that evoke mood beautifully and stir the soul combined with a few more fast-paced numbers that really worked for their respective scenes. I loved the part where Mother Giselle starts off the chorus in that beautiful deep rich voice, then everyone sings to you; when we hear Leliana's lovely natural singing voice, and Cullen's melted my insides.
The sound design, however, I agree with those who say it was sometimes lacking. Not enough sound effects in the places you'd want them. Great in combat, but so empty for ambience, overall... though I did love the fennec foxes' sounds when they got alarmed and squeaked at me. So cute. Wish I could've had one as a pet.
I love the tinkling notes like running water in the Hinterlands. I love the ominous deep strings of In Hushed Whispers; so eerie and lonely and desolate. I loved Maryden's songs, though the lyrics were a bit off in places. The Enchanter song was particularly inspiring and moving to me as a mage-loving player. The romance piano was natural and beautiful, and really set the scenes beautifully. My only complaint might be that it didn't play often enough out in the world. (Except at Caer Oswin. Music there was totally jarring.)
Overall, it was 90% perfect for me. I hope Bioware keeps him, and I wouldn't mind Maryden popping up again.
