I've been fascinated with the idea of animation, but my favorite style I've seen is called Rotoscoping, which is basically the process of taking live action footage and then drawing over that footage frame-by-frame to make your animations look more "human". These are a few reason's I like it over other pieces of animation.
1. It's very straightforward - animation is tricky because it requires a sense of timing down to the last frame. I could do motion capture, but its a fairly complicated set up even if I aim for a low budget approach. With rotoscoping, you just have to draw over the actors, or if you insist on using 3d, just copy the live action footage with your 3d model.
2. You can do cool art stuff - if you've seen movies like Scanner Darkly, you know that often times rotoscoping animation can be used to add this weird style to your animations. I'm a fan of doing weird things with animation, whether it just be using solid colors with no outlines, or just coloring certain things and leaving other things black and white.
3. You aren't that restricted - with motion capture, the only effect capturing requires perfect cameras or a 3d model that's very, very close to humanoid. But with rotoscoping, I've found that you could easily ignore those restrictions and have your characters look like anything, using the movement of the actors as a guide for your character. If I wanted to animate a dinosaur, I could easily film someone acting like a dinosaur or using a dinosaur puppet, and then draw the actual dinosaur over the footage.
What do you guys think? Are you a fan of Rotoscope animation. If not, why?
