I've mentioned interest in wanting to make video games, but I think a big part in getting started is finding the game engine that's right for me. Something, I would want to use majority of the time for one-man gaming projects, but also has a standard community to help me get feedback and possibly job offers (of course, I can advertise directly on my social media of course). Two engines stand out, Unreal Engine and Unity. Both are free to use, both were used to create awesome games, and both have community pages dedicated to helping beginners learn to make games and to share final products. But I'm having trouble deciding which one. Can you guys help?
My recommendations are:
- My prime area of focus is on Telltale style adventure games, but having an engine that can easily help me make all kinds of games is a good bonus.
- I have TINY coding skills, so an engine that can make games without requiring blocks of code is a MUST!
- Should be able to import animations from Maya (my primary animation software).
- MUST make cutscenes.
- Ability to have cell-shading is a plus but not required.

I actually created a Deus Ex map using UnrealEd for my senior project when I was in high school. It was extremely easy to use with the tools provided by Ion Storm.
Not sure about making a game from scratch with the new Unreal engine though.
Edit: Jesus, I just realized that it was 15 years ago. I feel so old.

From my experience Unity is easier to get started with but no matter which path you take you're going to run into the issue of nothing out there that's worth the time and effort to actually make an entire game with will let you get by without needing somebody who knows how to code.
When I worked in Unity, even something as simple as a seeking missile attack was a thing that I had to write the script for because it didn't exist inside the engine itself. Hell, spawning an enemy required code because while the engine could do that a script still needed to exist to tell it when to spawn the enemy and what enemy to spawn.
The problem you will always run into with automated code generating systems is that the code they produce is never terribly well written(which results in things like awful optimization and bugs that you wont be able to fix) as well as they ultimately will be limited in what you can achieve with them.
Beyond that both engines will cover everything else that you want to do including the cel shading.
