So far I`m not really liking the experience.
Game is starting up way too slowly making it feel like a chore to get threw the game.
Open world does feel like it`s going to hurt the game as I keep having to explore, scan, combat the environment.
Weapons don`t feel right, I`m finding myself just running in and melee with everything rather than using ranged weapons.
I won`t lie, I was actually considering cancelling my pre-order when I closed the game.

MP is fun but the problem with mic is there again; I just had an extremely noisy match with someone's open mic blaring every mouse / key clicks and word he said.

PSA to those with the trial that cannot launch the game: I had my Inquisition install stop working after a recent Origin update, and I ended up having to put the game in my antivirus (Avast)'s exceptions folder. Seems the update fudged things up a bit for Origin, perhaps try that too? Don't have the trial so I can't test this.

Only a couple hours into the single player, so my impressions are somewhat limited by that. However, the quick run down (without going into spoilers and trying to avoid completely subjective feelings; i.e. complaints about Liam as I really don't like him) of things I could see getting fixed/addressed;
-- Lighting. There's a decent number of character models that look fairly poor in large part due to lighting issues. This is primarily the case in certain locations with very bright, harsh lighting such as the Nexus. You could see this in some of the promo-material as well. What happens is the lighting choice overly illuminates the character model causing the colours to be washed out and details to be lost or harder to see. In places with lighting that is more even, natural, or darker these problems vanish and the character models look much better -- even mitigates some of the animation jank issues.
-- Facial animations. These remain a serious concern. They vary in cause of problem; from some that are too wooden to others that are too active (especially when it involves the eyes focused on two separate objects). Also some clipping issues. A certain Turian on the Nexus and his right eye as an example. There is also an issue with how facial animations don't always match the tone of conversation, especially femRyder's smirk even when discussing topics that should be emotionally charged (depressed, sad, angry, etc.). Not sure enough work was put in on some of that.
-- The character creator. It is, unfortunately, far too shallow. Only being able to tweak a set of presets in fairly minor ways and the complete lack of a complexion option within each preset, in particular, was very under-whelming and frustrating. I tried most of the femRyder presets and couldn't get any to look like how I wanted my Ryder to look; something I was fairly easily able to do in previous Mass Effects, despite the issues with those CCs. There needs to be more options in terms of what we can modify. I understand this may not be possible due to the facial scanning tech you guys went with, but I'm hoping otherwise. A few more hair-styles would be appreciated, beyond removing the gender-gating.
-- I've seen a number of enemy AI issues and have also seen them in a number of streams/youtube videos. One example; near the end of the initial mission one enemy was in proper cover (meaning the cover was between it and my squad), but then decided to get out of cover, vault over the cover and entered cover on the other side; thus completely exposing itself to my entire squad. It then left cover, quickly, and vaulted back over the cover and re-entered cover on the proper side. It did this at least a half dozen times, never firing a shot or anything besides leaving cover/vaulting cover/entering cover/repeat, before I finally stopped laughing to kill it.
-- The galaxy map movement when selecting places to go (the big swooping animation sequence) became extremely tiresome fairly quickly, especially with how.. odd it felt due to it feeling like it was in first person and I wasn't someone in a ship flying somewhere. The ship should be shown flying there, or the animation should take place from the view-point of Ryder inside the ship (so you could see through the glass, over the shoulder of Ryder as it flies to the target) -- or it should be removed.
-- Scanning. I wanted to like it. I like things that give me more info. I like things that make me feel like I'm interacting with the environment/world I'm in. This, however, quickly became very tedious. This is due to a couple things but is primarily the result of two things; speed and frequency. What I mean by speed is that the act of scanning something, or an area (such as a small room, even) takes too long in almost every regard. Moving around while scanning is slow, acquiring the object I want to scan feels slow (and easily prone to start/stopping if your mouse/controller moves a touch too much) and the window of what it tries to scan is too small. The other problem, frequency, is because of just how much there is to scan, or think you can scan. Now, this isn't entirely bad (more is better in this regard), but when combined with the issue of speed it becomes very tedious very quickly. I started to cringe when I entered a new area, knowing how much time I'd waste scanning, often for little to no gain/reason.
-- Combat. I was expecting to hate combat due to some of the changes made. I was partially right. I hate the removal of tactical pause (and I hate the idea of removing it for those who are disabled), and I hate the inability to properly command my squad in the usage of their abilities. However, combat iself, even as someone who sticks to cover a lot and doesn't take much advantage of the jump jet (and expected to loathe the jump jet in combat).. it felt great. Smooth, satisfying and faster paced without giving me too much of a feeling of being overwhelmed. The guns felt a little.. 'light' in terms of feel, but otherwise I couldn't find a single complaint about how the combat actually 'felt'.
-- Nomad. I still want a gun on it. That aside.. feels great. The controls are superb. I want the thing to have a gun but other than my issue with that design decision I couldn't really find an issue with it.
I'm enjoying the game, but I do have a number of issues with it beyond what I listed above, but those mostly focus on things that I don't feel have a chance of being changed and represent more of a design philosophy I don't entirely agree with -- squad-mate customization, as an example (give me more skins/armour choices akin to ME3 and the ability to change their weapons to suit the tactical situation!). Haven't tried multiplayer yet, however, I have high hopes for it.

I'm only 4 hours in and I'm very happy in terms of content. One big thing I think would improve the game for me, silly as it sounds, is better facial textures. Unfortunately mine and every Ryder I see seems to look much older than 22, and I have no issue with that normally but the texture's are sometimes so wrinkley looking I go "Oh boy." I can't describe it properly but it's entirely a facial texture issue imo. Which explains people's early reactions of "why is ryder so old" I mean, while I am at it, a lot of characters like Suvi and Addison have intense makeup that really distracts me and doesn't feel... normal. If the intensity of their makeup was turned down... a bit. Most of my feedback is visual I know, but it distracts me from the game in a way I don't find necessary. I think it's not needed to say the CC could use a good bit of love, IE eyebrows, customize the face in a real way, etc. The option to change facial textures would be nice, not just one. Options for freckles. Maybe the ability to recolor my scars from red, and also to move scars like in DAI. The eye issue, seems also to be a lack of good textures, a lack of complexity in color like Suvi etc, is sometimes jarring. There's also an issue where basically I couldn't make my ryders face not look super puffy, which might also be a texture thing but sliders could fix that. I'd hope. Also Character limit at 9 is disappointing, I was one letter short of her name. And that's it! I'm sure I'll have non visual notes later but sorry, it's just a big thing that distracted me. Oh, a bug thing is that when Scott is in his pod and you talk to Lexi, Lexi's arms are up and straight out over the pod like she's doing yoga. Also, Cora seems to not wanna kiss Sara and that seems like a big bug.

I've put a couple of hours in and finished the first mission. I'm really in to it at the moment. Don't know how it is when the game opens more up though. The CC is no good, a loooong step backwards from DA:I. The faces and facial animations were also better in DA:I (at least it seems like it to me so far).

3.5 hours in, having such a good time. The first planet mission surprised me that it was bigger (more to do) than expected - DAI's Prologue was done in an hour. I hope I'll be able to go back later, the completionist in me would like to. I'm enjoying the 'starting from nothing' mentality. And incidentally, I'm running with the rather meanly maligned Default Sara. The hair on the back of her neck is wonderfully done (that's probably more than you want to know...) The procedural 'zoom in' for minor conversations is so much better than DAI. The only consideration for me as a player is to not trigger the conversation until you're close up, because you can do so further away and be 'stuck' to shouting to each other at a distance It looks great. Biggest complaint? I'm going to burn through the 10 hours tomorrow I expect...

Not far into it so far, just over an hour. I like Sara's voice a lot. Like the jet pack quite a lot. Didn't expect to. Same with scanning. Graphics are okay, but then I only have a gtx 90. Music is great. Nice fast paced combat. Lover charge. Animations are lacking a bit. Character creator is very bad. Can't really change much of anything, not like in previous games. Far, far, far cry from DAI CC. Need to be able to change nose, eyebrows, eyes, mouth as in original trilogy. Removing pause in combat? Why? Not everyone loved ME3 MP. Anyway, thanks for asking!

I just finished the first 3 hours of my trial play through.
- It is damned good, in my opinion. The characters so far are solid and interesting, with distinct personalities. I love Liam's voice!!! And the music is powerful and really draws you in.
- The combat is way more fun than I thought it would be. I was worried it would be too much for me, because I really loved playing as an infiltrator in the original games and being able to get into cover and take out the field-o-enemies. I did not enjoy biotics/up close-combat as much in ME1 thru ME3. In this game, however, I get to duck behind cover and take out the trash, and then jump about in my tactical cloak like a mad woman and clear the rest of em up like a jet-pack wearing goddess of doom! The jump/float tactic is wicked! It is super fun, overall, and the battles feel more realistic. Really, really nice! I can't wait to build my Sarah into a tech/soldier tactical beast!!!
- The intro is a bit abrupt, so I am hoping that more about what is going on will come out slowly as I continue to play.
- I was annoyed at first because I kept cutting off the NPC dialogue any time I did anything. But I figured out how to pace a bit better to keep that from happening. It takes a little getting used to, but is MILES better than the dreadful lack of banter in DAI.
- The character creator is abysmal. I tried for 1/2 hr or more to make a decent looking Caucasian woman, including playing as the default, to no avail. Luckily, the I was able to make a lovely Asian character (the only attractive model, #1, imo). I thought it would suck because I like to play as a good looking version of myself (hey, it's my fantasy, damn it!). But, the voice really fits the character I made and the lip-syncing is spot on (waaaaay better than the previews suggested), so I got over it and am now enjoying the game. And while it is a bummer to not being able to play a freckled little green-eyed gal with auburn hair, it is not the end of the world. However, I will say that many women will likely be disappointed in their choices.
- It feels like Mass Effect. That was very important to me...so...yay!
- Overall, I think I will enjoy this game immensely and can't wait to see what happens next! Now, I have to force myself to go to bed instead of playing more so I can wake up for work!
Edited to add: One SUPER annoying feature on PC. I click M for map, then have to click escape to get out. Why can't I jut hit M again? It makes looking at the map annoying when I just want to quickly orientate myself. Just a tiny gripe, but is it possible to fix that?

My tired eyes missed this sticky and I posted in the other first impressions thread. I'm glad to see so many people calling out the CC! All right, I played through the entire prologue twice so I'm just going to put down some ramblings before I drift off to sleep. First off, the custom character creation for Male Ryder -- what happened here? Not enough options anywhere. Facial hair and hair options, what's going on? Do I need to verify files? Are they hiding some beard/hair styles as preorder bonuses somewhere? Somehow the one buzz cut manages to look worse than any of them ever did in the OT and the other short crop option looks like you are regrowing after the school nurse went at you for spreading a bad case of lice. The skin textures also look really weird on custom Scotts. I was playing on the Ultra preset and the skin/lighting made a custom Scott look like he was in his mid to late 30s. The Lady Ryder options are much better across the board, but still way too limited. CC feels like a major step back from what we're used to. As far as how the game runs, very smooth for the most part though for some reason the game hangs when I go straight to 'exit to desktop' from the pause menu and I've got to go into task manager and kill the process. Animation hiccups are really noticeable in conversation, there's something really off with the eyes on everyone, and a lot of times limbs twitch for no reason. There's also a lot of clipping. And god damnit fuck the Avenger. The KB+M interface is horrible by default. The mouse acceleration is not good and is on by default, make sure you turn this off! About halfway through the first prologue run I just gave up and grabbed my 360 controller. It's very obvious this was the experience they had in mind when they designed the game. The jet pack/dash didn't really 'sing' for me until I went for the controller, the experience is not as fun with a KB+M. I'll revisit this once retail release comes around and I have more time to dither around with settings and key bindings. Let's see, what else... the sound design is better than what I expected from the footage. Guns could stand to get a little more oomph to them, but the drop ships and the environment sounds are all pretty great. The environments themselves are a different story. The cryo bay in the Ark Hyperion, well... we've all seen it. It's not going to wow anyone. Not sure why we're still using fluorescent tube lamps in the 2100s. I did find the info wall to be a nice touch, especially when I asked it for a mission status. Walking around and meeting the characters who accompany the pathfinder team planet-side for the prologue was cool, they all have a little flavor text. Very nice touch. Space and the scourge look impressive, they gave you camera control for the loading screens (in the shuttle and the tram) and you have those loading screen conversations back! On to Habitat 7 itself. I'm not digging the design of this planet so far or the look of remnant tech. Can't quite put my finger on what it is, but while the planet does look strange and foreign I can't help but feel like if not for the remnant tech it might be better suited for a fantasy setting. In fact those curling, glowing plants feel like something I saw in the starting area of Amalur. The map itself feels like a series of corridors with a few small alcoves for 'exploration', this is pretty standard for the series and tutorial levels so I'm not too fussed about this. The prologue is really long if you take your time poking in all of those alcoves. There's no real time crunch, but Liam will get on your last nerve telling you to forge ahead. Speaking of Cora and Liam die a lot. Cora gets herself in some bad spots using charge. Liam seems to do a better job of dealing damage, but can also find himself in some bad positions / dead. It was almost always one or the other in a downed state at that last big fight at the door, even when I was bouncing back forth and laying singularities down for them and detonating with throw. This was on normal difficulty. The squad AI feels lackluster, like you need to be more involved in what they're doing and where they're doing it. Without the Power Wheel to give them a little direction on positioning and power deployment I feel like the squadmates are just vestigial limbs at this point. Maybe this will get better as they level and their damage/health scales. Combat itself is fun. Enemies do come from a lot of sides and push up pretty aggressively (to a limit) and they aren't that sponge-y if you're using your powers properly. (Individual cooldowns are great!) I really missed playing like a biotic god and the cool downs mean you can prime/detonate pretty often in combat. The automatic cover does take some getting used to. 3 hours in and I'm still not snapping to cover as quickly as I'd like in some situations or getting out of it in ways I want to. This feels like a downgrade right now, like a slightly improved take on ME1's lousy auto cover. I'm sure my opinion will improve as I learn its idiosyncrasies like I did ME1's. There's a lot of loot in this game, but at this point it all looks like crafting junk. Not really feeling it, but maybe as I get to know what all these parts do I'll be excited about UNIVERSAL TRANSFORMER, MINERAL ##, or BASIC AR STOCK. Come on, this is an RPG. Tell me at some point in this game I'm going to kill an enemy and pry a weapon from his cold, dead hands! And what's with the Kett using weapons that look so typical in form to the Milky Way. Why not give these guys something more unique? 2.5m ly away and we're still looking at vaguely collector-ish enemies with 'organic' looking assault rifles/shotguns/etc. Hopefully this game has some surprises up its sleeve later on. Couple of other miscellaneous thoughts ... The scanning mechanic... man. I am really not enjoying this thing. I guess the saving grace is that the the compass lights up and tells you when there's something nearby to scan. I don't really like these horizontal compasses and much prefer a mini-map style, and this light up mechanic doesn't really give you a good indication of which direction you should be looking for this scannable thing. The UI as a whole could use more work. There are too many nested menus. I miss the old days of CRPGs where your character was all there on one screen, feels like there's a lot of wasted real estate. The music hasn't won me over yet, I am going to give the score another listen tomorrow morning on my jog and see how I feel about it. Edit: Also want to add, I feel like the intro to the Kett could have been handled a little better. Right now they really just feel like unthinking foozles who gladly march/drop to their doom. I like the Aliens reference to show Habitat 7, but maybe there could have been some In-Cryo SIM combat training thing to introduce the combat mechanics so it didn't have to get introduced at the same time as the Kett. Also could have used it to render Habitat 7 as the 600 years earlier scan showed it and then had that stark contrast when we landed really hit hard. Maybe too labor intensive, unless it ends up looking that gorgeous once you hit 100% AVP I know I sound like a Debbie Downer but overall, for me, Mass Effect has always been a series that is greater than the sum of its parts. When I break everything down I can find a lot of faults (clearly) in certain aspects of the game, but when I'm playing I'm just happy to be in the ME universe again. I gotta keep an eye on the time so I'm not wasting all 10 hours so far ahead of release. YMMV, but I feel like if you're enough of a fan to be a member of this forum, you're going to like this game even if you don't agree with some of the decisions the devs have made.

My biggest complaint is the facial animations more specifically Sara's inability to show any other emotion than that grimace. When she was talking to Addison about Alec it looked like she had a big smile on her face the whole time which kind of ruined the scene Wasn't a huge fan of the way skill points work but that might just be my familiarity with the trilogy and having this being so different. Also about Cora you guys seriously don't think it's a problem that lesbians are the only orientation who haven't had a human squad mate?? We wanted one in ME3 and you ignored us and made Kaidan bi. Fast forward five years later you still didn't give us one. Instead we got another Asari (whom I love don't get me wrong but we already had Liara), and a big lizard bird which is obviously not up to everyone's taste. Why couldn't have Cora been made into Sara this game. It makes no sense and a lot of people are devastated.

None Spoiler Feedback:
The Positive:
Combat feels great, movement looks great, characters all seem very interesting so far! The environment is beautiful and I feel very comfortable with the controls. Also the voice acting is amazing, you guys did really well in that aspect as well!
What needs work:
Not sure if you guys are already improving this stuff but the most notable negatives I've seen so far are:
CC needs more variety (altering facial proportions and such) allowing a level of change similar to dragon age inquisition. Giving the eyes a little more of a life to them, it definitely improved but there's still something off about the eyes...
Other than that, you guys have done an amazing job, I can't wait to play more of it!

A few thoughts after playing for a couple hours (I just got to the Nexus):
- I really like all the voice acting so far. Sarah is great, as is Liam. I think I know what my first romance is going to be! - I'm enjoying the squad banter. Lots of snarky commentary - not every joke lands, but enough of them do to make it worthwhile. - As everybody and their mother has pointed out, the facial animations are awful. The eyes in particular are just weird and wrong. I'm sure I'll be able to enjoy the game like this, but I really hope some work is done to improve the faces. - Story seems interesting so far. The pacing has felt a little inconsistent at times, but I'm very early in the game. Now that I'm on the nexus, I hope I have a chance to breathe and a little and take my bearings. After that, I'm really looking forward to finding out what's going on in the Helius cluster. - Combat is fun! The starting weapons suck, but they always suck. I'm looking forward to upgrading gear and diving into the skill system. - The sound design in this game seems really nice. Lots of cool ambient sounds and weapon noises really bring the world to life. - The game runs surprisingly well, especially given that my PC doesn't even meet all the minimum specs (specifically my CPU).
Overall, I'm very pleased. I can't wait to play more (and to try MP)!
Edit: I should add that I played default Sarah and did not try the CC.

Only played 2 hrs so far... but am really loving it. I love my companions (Liam and Vet are current 's) and Cora is growing on me quickly. Hell, most of the characters I have had the pleasure of meeting are very solid. I adore the voice acting, very very solid job. I like the story, what I've seen so far. I am not huge on crafting (At all), but that goes for most games with crafting. xD I'm sure I'll get used to it, though. I'll give more feedback once I've played a bit more.

Quick feedback. As stated in a few above, eyes could use some work. I'd say a higher res texture. It's weird seeing the high quality on clothes/armors/faces then the eyes look almost cartoon like. Creates a weird disconnect when talking to characters.
Will have more detailed pros cons later, that was just my big standout

CC is abysmal, DadRyder looks just barely related to my Sara (may be that I made whiter a preset I guess now that was biracial) and no related at all to (default) Scott. Otherwise, game looks great, characters seem pretty interesting, combat is fun, voice-acting is on point, and I'm in love with The tempest. Also with the third casual outfit. I just hit the gate and I was expecting it halfway into that part of the quest, though. A sneak peek into the quest, even ten minutes of it, would have been great.

Just finished the prologue, which was mostly good.
- Game runs great on recommended specs, and it even loads quicker than DA:I on a normal HDD (like way quicker) - Sound design is pretty damn impressive, wasn't expecting it to be that good. Really adds to the atmosphere. - Envoirmental graphics are very good, and some moments are jaw dropping. Got some good screenshots. - Combat is very fluid, and the powers are very fun to use. The cover is however a bit tricky, and the weapons feel a bit lackluster. - The movement is very fluid and feels great compared to say Mass Effect 3. Running and walking animations are very good. - Plot is Interesting, and the story revolving around it so far is good, but nothing mindblowing (yet?). - Voice acting so far is stellar, like with every Bioware title, nothing new here. Kudos to Fryda Wolff for rocking it as Fem Ryder.
- The characters talk too much, like way too much. So much banter that i became numb to it. Also a lot of auto dialogue on Ryder, not digging that. - Facial Animations, while improved from some of the IGN vids i saw, are still very rough. It doesn't bother me that much, but you won't get a pass on this. - The CC is a travesty, and the eyes look like they are made of glass. It gets a bit better with darker colours, but this needs to be looked at.
A few notes here on the options menu and UI, will add more later.
- Option menu is hard to navigate, and none of the options actually say what they do, which is problematic in the graphics menu. - No quicksave? Couldn't find a key for it under key bindings, tried tappping F5 nothing happened. How can you launch without quicksave?
I am only 90 minutes in, so my impression will change. So far its an ok game, at a few moments a very good one. Looking forward to catching my breathe and exploring the nexus.

So far I love the game. I've played for two hours now and have been having a blast. The story is engaging and moves smoothly. I'm not great at shooters, but I am missing my squadmates, hitting my targets, and have gotten pretty good at the jump pack shoot over cover. I only have a few complaints. The KB&M GUI is a bit klunky. Although the jet pack is nice, I miss being able to slide over cover. More importantly I could not save my game. I overstepped with charge and died; and now I have to start over from the cc. Back to make another Ryder Rebel. Edit: ______________________________________________________ Now it saves (heavy sigh). I'm going to bed. Start over in the morning.

I quite like it, oh yes I do. You know a game is good when you pick it up at 6 at 8 and before you know it it's midnight.

I quite like it, and having fun so far. (To be fair, I'm easily pleased for the most part.)
Graphics look good - I'm running slightly below recommended specs (I only have a GTX970), and I still got auto-detected at HIGH detail for graphics.

I've played 4 hours so far and these are my thoughts. The combat feels fast and fluid and the sticky cover didn't take long to adjust to. The voice acting is great as I anticipated it would be. Sara Ryder and Scott both have a unique voice and feel distinct from each other as characters. The nomad feels good to drive. The character creator however is very underwhelming. I stuck with default Ryder in the end. There's a lot of menus and submenus to wade through in terms of inventory and codex and journals etc. It feels over designed. The galaxy map is pretty and so are the transition animations but they may start to grate after a while given their slowness. Ryder has a strange looking mouth at times too. That being said it feels like Mass Effect and I'm loving it.

Obviously, we're more invested in Mass Effect than the average gaming journalist, so to hear "It feels like Mass Effect" is a sigh of relief. I can handle bad animations and other faults, as long as its my good old Mass Effect
