It sucks.
No matter what I do I die.
I had no difficulties with previous ME games, but the combat here is atrocious. The power wheel is gone, access to only 3 powers period, no squad mate commands, enemy flanking me every time no matter what I do. Immediate death.
I would like some tips for how to make this game's combat bearable/tolerable bc I am heavily accustomed to the cover system of the old games.

Biotic Charge ??? Enemies Die.
On a more serious note: you can't just stay in one spot anymore and expect not to be flanked. You have to constantly be moving, killing and keeping an eye on where the enemies are. I have no idea what sort of build you're playing, but I've found Backlash to be a surprisingly amazing addition to the Vanguard toolkit for extra survivability when charge isn't available.
Regardless of build, make sure you utilise your dodge/jump skills effectively. Being able to get up on buildings and simply dodge enemy fire is a bit part of the new combat system.

I think you're confusing 'it' and 'I'... considering pretty much the only thing that has been unanimous in the reviews is that the combat is a step up from the past.
Anyway... if you're getting flanked ensure to direct your teammates to either side of you to attempt to block the enemy off and also ensure you keep some level of movement yourself in order to stop yourself from simply being penned in by the enemy. With the amount of mobility in the game you really shouldn't just be shooting over cover all the time.
Other than those rather simplistic tips i'd suggest dropping the difficulty level down until you get a handle on how to play the game.

I think you're the first person I've seen to complain about the combat. I personally think it's fantastic in this game.
You have access to 12 powers at any time, but they're segmented into "Favourites", you just have to switch your Favourite mid-combat from the skills menu. Go into skills the menu, and go along the options (the top central bar) until you find your favourites.
Combat in this game is actually challenging, but as soon as you're used to the pace it gets easier. Stay on your toes, use cover, and direct your teammates to soften up targets. You have to be a lot more mobile in this game compared to the trilogy in that you have to change cover positions regularly, instead of just sitting in one spot. The evade feature is really valuable, so make sure you use it properly.

Well, it's not a super flashy kit, but it gets the job done. Sniper with barricade, energy drain, and tactical cloak. Barricade for instant cover, energy drain to replenish shields, tactical cloak to feel more damage and hide from enemies. Sniper keeps you on the outskirts of battle and in many of the open world encounters prevents you from being flanked.

What are playing as, first of all?
'Cause I think that'll help more than anything. What are the three main powers that you're using? And what levels are they at?
I mean, very honestly, I think that splitting the classes up was a dense idea. Why? Because it offered you to put points into everything. Well, two points into everything insures that you're gonna take down nothing.

If I had to make a complaint about the combat, it's the actual configuration of the controls. All I really want to do is have aiming and firing the weapon be swapped (aiming right firing left) without swapping a bunch of other stuff in the process.

I'm playing on the 'Hardcore' difficulty and I've found success by operating in three-dimensional space and using the focus-fire command -- translation: use your jet-pack to get vertical and use "up" button on the d-pad to tell your teammates who to use their abilities on (it's the only control you have over their powers).
I was struggling with the first 'Fiend' fight on Eos because we kept getting flushed out of cover by the 'Fiend' and flanked by the Kett; and without direct access to my squadmates powers I didn't have the number of tools I'm used to having to control a fight in a Mass Effect game.
That's when I started fighting from rooftops and priming the enemies for detonation, then using focus fire so my squad would use their powers to detonate the explosions.
I still prefer the pause-and-play combat from the trilogy, but I'm well on my way to mastering Andromeda's combat too.

I am loving the combat. I run tactical cloak, invasion, and assault drone, and I am having no issues. I don't even bother issuing orders to my companions. Has never really been my thing.

Wait, wait. Up on the d-pad orders focus fire on your target?
Are there other commands other than positioning?

It sucks. No matter what I do I die. First of all, I don't think it sucks. I'd prefer to call them more dynamic and fast-paced. I had no difficulties with previous ME games, but the combat here is atrocious. The power wheel is gone, access to only 3 powers period, no squad mate commands, enemy flanking me every time no matter what I do. Immediate death. True that the enemies will try to flush you out from your cover by surrounding or flanking you and your team. So it's up to you to move away quickly to counter this situation. And yeah, only have access to 3 powers does sucks, but we will just need to go on with what we have, right? How's your progression? Have you finished the main quest on Eos? This morning I was in a side mission on Eos, where suddenly I found myself being surrounded by enemies. I tried to get them one by one while staying in my cover with my team. In the end, I got flanked and dead. After several tries, I managed to find my pace with the combat. Get one of the enemies, check the situation - if it's not good, do run-and-dash to another defensive position. Repeat this formula, you should be okay. And also, did you guys know that we can change aiming shoulder by pressing ALT button while in the cover?
