The 18 day battle is called that literally for a reason I believe Belgium sort of crumpled like a beer can. It looked like a good fight on paper, I must admit they had more tanks, soldiers and what have you but the invading Germans made up for it with excellent air support, artillery and tank usage, Von Brock is half the reason this fight went as well as it did. Man was a gambler and knew how to position forces for said operations, busting the Belgium lines wide open on the shores of Leie and then just blow the surviving encirclement to pieces with point to point aircraft bombardment. o-o Truly that was a day that anyone in the Wehrmacht could stand proud. They had repelled the French forces, utterly decimated much of the Belgian forces, ruined any chance of a British miracle. At that moment in history? It appeared to all the world that Germany had more or less won the war then and there. Yes history often lets the losers of a conflict start strong in their wars. Punic Pride represent! Overtly strong in this case given that France itself would later fall a month later.

I did pick up this book a while back: Fascinating read. I knew Hannibal got screwed by politicians in Carthage, but I did not know how screwed. Apparently at one point, they opted to sent armies to various pieces of land they lost in the first punic war rather than reinforce Hannibal. Some armies were larger than Hannibal's. All of which were decisively beaten. And when he -rather successfully-purged some of the rampant corruption in Carthage, he was effectively ousted when he fled for his life rather than murdered or turned over to Rome. Oh, and he never sieged Rome because he never had the supply lines. Sieging Rome likely would have meant starving outside the walls. Still, a military genius by any standard.

I don't understand why you like Belgium so much. In most of its history it was part of the Holy Roman Empire, Netherlands or France. Well, Belgium was and is one of the think tanks of the world. It has to count for something. Interesting map showing intellectual superiority of France, England, Netherlands, and Belgium (Spanish/Austrian Netherlands) in the first half of the 18th century: web.stanford.edu/group/toolingup/rplviz/rplviz.swfBelgium might not be independent till 1830 but since the fall of the Roman Empire it was always one of the most important regions of the West.

Interesting map. Middle East and Arab tribes 1 century before Islam: Note: Oman and Yaman were small but worthy civilizations. And... the light orange tribes were an ally of Sassanid Empire.

And here's a vid on the Japanese Type 100 Flamethrower, which saw use in WW2/Second Sino-Japanese war.

Speaking of flamethrowers, did you hear about that SAS sniper who recently took out Daesh's flamethrower "executioner", along with 3 of his buddies? He hit his gas tank from a mile away. Then they moved in and rescued the 12 people they were about to burn alive. .... Not that this has anything to do "History". But it will one day.

Here's something I think should be of interest and be noted (and it sort of touches some other posts I've made).
Couple of comments though: "Arabic" (or Hindu-Arabic) numerals and the decimal position system are actually not arabic. They are Indian. Original arabic numerals and number system look differently. Same with Algebra, it's an arabic word but was actually invented in India, that's where Baghdad got it from. The West though got all these things from the Arabs, and because the West since then has basically had the naming rights on everything, it's "our" arabic names that have stuck.
"All these books translated into arabic" refers of course mainly to Greek and Indian works.

How so? 1500 years ago, Syrians were largely Christian -- even the word "Christian" was first used in Syria. But they were ethnically the same, and were conquered by the first Arab/Muslim conquests. Baldwin is the only parallel I see with modern times... After that, the Mongols kicked everyone's ass. There hasn't been anything like it since, and I hope we don't see it again

Hmm.. Ghassanids, Christian Arabs with this as their coat of arms: I knew about the existence of some sort of Christian Arabs, but I didn't actually search them before. But the main people and their language was mostly Syriac. "Syria was mostly a Syriac and Hellenized land with some Jewish presence and with a partly Arab population, especially in its eastern and southern parts. The Syriac Christians, Jews and Arabs had been there since pre-Roman times, and some had embraced Christianity since Constantine I legalized it in the fourth century and moved the capital from Italy to Byzantium (renamed Constantinople), from which the name Byzantine is derived.
The Arabs of Syria were people of no consequence until the migration of the powerful Ghassan tribe from Yemen to Syria, who thereafter ruled a semi-autonomous state with their own king under the Romans. The Ghassan Dynasty became one of the honoured princely dynasties of the Empire, with the Ghassan king ruling over the Arabs in Jordan and Southern Syria from his capital at Bosra. The last of the Ghassan kings, who ruled at the time of the Muslim invasion, was Jabla bin Al Aiham."

And the last three generations (roughly 80-90 years) classify as Zeitgeschichte, or latest history.
