Anyone read any decent books on Israel's history? No. I only know about Moses, Exodos, David, Goliath, Sodom and Gomorrah, Schliemann, Joseph, Assyrian Invasion to Israel, Babylonians (Nebuchadnezzar) enslaving them, their good relations with Persians, Their relations and treatment of Jesus, their revolts against the Roman Empire, brown and black Jewish tribes in Arabia and East Africa, their big temple being destroyed, being an influential minority till 6th century, their war against Christians under Byzantines before Islam, the defeat and downfall of their tribes under Islam, being spread in Europe, their 11th century butchering in Germany(?) and by Crusaders in Palestine. + Their famous philosophers, economists, artists and scientists. 19th century Zionism and the rest which is well known.

^ Scottish accent is funny for this battle!
The chance of an actual battle between Romans and Vikings was very low. Because Vikings mass invasions around Europe began a few centuries after the fall of Rome (as I remember). They sure used to faring around (even as old as 1000 B.C) by their boats but not in that scale.

Documentary about Operation Dragoon, the Allied invasion of southern France in WW2 that began on August 15th, several months after the D-Day landings in Normandy. It isn't talked about being it isn't technically a military success story, nor is a failure. Its a stalemate and no one wants to hear about a stalemate.

Almost accurate. The nomadic Iranian tribes (Scythes, Sakas) were dominant in west Central Asia for almost 2000 years. Only defeated about 150 BC to Huns and early Turks. Tochar people went too much to the east. They completely invaded by turkic tribes so early. And About Iran it's likely correct (not much historical data about them except Assyrian/Babylonians epigraphs and myth tales). I never estimated the European Iranians presence in Persia more than 4000 years. And this gif is quite educational for the Sassanid empire:

Mittanies and Hitties are supposedly related to Indo-Europeans.
Ah, Israel was pretty badass in some point! The actual non-Jewish states were in current Lebanon and Gaza tbh.
I have Elamite and Median ancestry and likely Greco-Roman and Assyrian. I missed the point when Elam actually kicked Assyria's ass in 12th century B.C, but soon after the Babylonians took over!
Correction: Medes Empire didn't conquer Elam. First Ashurbanipal of Assyria did brutally and in the next century Cyrus the great of Achaemenid Empire did with the least conflict.
And... for Norwegians, Swedes, Danes and Finns:

ArchWarhammer of political/warhammer fame sat down and played through an entire campaign og Graviteam Tactics during the course of Operation Star/Case Blue/ Braunschweig the mid summer German offensive during the invasion of the Soviet Union during 1943 during the battles around Voronezh. Basically the entire game revolves around the actions of Army Group South or Central Front depending upon if you roll Wehrmacht or Red Army.
Historically? The Russians broke straight through the Second Army and inflicted massive losses to the Second Panzer and threatened to totally engulf the beleaguered German forces, while this was avoided due to some swift action on the part of the SS units and their assorted commanders it basically spelled the end for the final real chance of a late German offensive in the USSR having any real chance of success. Of course this led to the Donets Campaign and the Second Panzer's famous breakout of Kharkov and the continued push onward towards Kursk in an attempt to further prolong the campaign and delay the Soviet counteroffensive.
However...in this campaign well, Arch being the somewhat half way decent strategy gamer that he is basically did the same as the Russians did and completely shattered their front line and encircled Voronezh and secured the main highway once again capturing the city which had fallen earlier in the year in January but more then that that roadway served as a critical objective of the campaign for the Wehrmacht. To put it very, very bluntly it put the Germans basically in an excellent position. They had punched through the resistance and basically ended the Southern Russian Campaign outright. They don't have anything capable of stopping them in the region anymore by this point. The oil fields of Baku await and Stalingrad can finally be reinforced from the South interesting times to be sure.
I have played this game before and while I agree with Arch on the RNG and AI sometimes being complete bullshit, it provides a fairly interesting experience for a strategy game player, for while these battles were not the greatest of the war, they featured vast sums of differing units and weapon types. Everything from Panzer II's to KV-1s to the most obscure German artillery pieces of the war, its all there.
I think that while the game has flaws it provides an interesting window into a fairly obscure set of battles, and I have always been fond of obscure battles. Especially ones such as these where you have so much at stake for stuff no one even remembers.
o.o
History games tend to be fun for me.

Falling off the front page, history thread? That won't do. Anyway, I recently found out that the first submersible with a documented use in combat was built by Connecticut man during the American Revolution in an attempt to attach explosive charges to the hulls of British ships in 1775. I mean, they never actually succeeded, but still. Neat. en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Turtle_(submersible)

Sure the actual drilling a hole into a ship's hull and placing a charge inside didn't work so well in practice and the pilot was too disoriented by carbon dioxide inhalation for a second attempt if the first failed, but it was still a a pretty sophisticated attempt. Apparently the guy even used bioluminescent fungus to light the instruments in the interior (Though the bioluminescence apparently didn't last under cold temperatures)
