In 1927 85 year old American Civil War veteran (Union) Laurentine Higbie was recorded singing a tune called The Veteran's Last Song, in tribute to his comrades that had passed on. It was recorded at a time when many of the remaining civil war veterans were starting to pass on, not unlike today and our vanishing World War Two veterans. I think it's pretty cool to hear the voice of someone who was born in 1842(!) and fought in a war that ended in 1865. Almost like stepping back in time. Not bad for an old guy, either! Reminds me of something I heard about the Rebel Yell. That it was never quite captured. And by the time it could be recorded, the old guys couldn't do it or something. I'm no fan of the rebels, but it's still a shame.

www.independent.co.uk/voices/st-georges-day-symbol-of-the-far-right-was-an-immigrant-a7695511.htmlSo this ignorant or malicious piece was written in a famous newspaper. What do you think? In the 4th century there was no Turk in the eastern "Roman Empire". The Huns were the similar group but they were spread from Aral sea to North Caspian sea (they were hindered by Sassanid Empire and the Byzantines). Even the Gokturk Empire was created in 6th century and it was stopped by Sassanid Empire. Never reached Anatolia. Only after Islam with large market of Slavery some Turks entered the middle east and possibly byzantine empire. No big group of Turks ever entered the core Byzantine Empire until 11th century (Seljuks).

No big group of Turks ever entered the core Byzantine Empire until 11th century (Seljuks). Ignorant. Really fuckin' ignorant, but not malicious. It's one of those things where you can kind of understand the sentiment behind it, but you have to laugh at the immense historical ineptitude with which it was executed. If I were British, and if this were produced by an American paper, I imagine I'd be saying something about how this is indicative of the deplorable state of modern American historical education. For what it's worth: Muslim sources refer to the large mercenary armies constructed by al-Mu'tasim and his successors from the mid-ninth century onward as having been "Turkish", but this is probably typical sloppy medieval ethnography for a wide array of Central Asian people that undoubtedly included Turks, maybe even a majority of Turks. Byzantine chroniclers noticed their presence - or at least the presence of steppe barbaroi, in their own tradition of sloppy Greek ethnography - in the army with which al-Mu'tasim waged war against Emperor Theophilos in the 830s. The "Turkish" armies became a major political makeweight in the late 'Abbasid khilafat: planting garrisons in cities, choosing rulers, lending their support to one side or another of the civil wars that tore apart the khilafat from 863 to 870. By the end of the ninth century, "Turkish" soldiers and governors were spread across the 'Abbasid Middle East from Egypt to the Zagros Mountains. There were probably never more than a hundred thousand, and probably not even close to that, but they were a presence in the region over two centuries before the Selcuks. Naturally, this has nothing to do with the Independent's bizarre and obviously anachronistic claim that everybody who has ever lived in what is now modern Turkey was a "Turkish" person, but I thought it was worth mentioning.

The first alphabetic Writing system on Earth. Before it only Cuneiform and Hieroglyph writing systems were used. Avestan Alphabet belongs to ancient Persia and is close to Sanskrit and old Latin languages: Difficult to learn. I learned Russian alphabet so fast in comparison.

This is one of the few African civilizations. (North Africans civilizations are basically are in the realm of Semite civilizations and don't count.)
I would call it the Islamic sub-Saharan empire.
