Hey, all! Just started up MEA last night (yeah, I know; a little late to the party). One thing... I'm getting my butt kicked in ways I never got it kicked in ME1-3. Any suggestions? My main problems are: 1. There are just HUGE mobs of enemy sometimes, with no choke points to channel them and force them to attack in the direction of your cover (as was frequently the case in ME 1-3; open world seems to = getting mobbed). I keep getting mobbed from all sides, and shields go down fast, even on "normal" difficulty. This is definitely not a game where you can sit behind cover and snipe the enemy (at one point I was almost comically being chased around my vehicle by this giant mob of Kett; tried to jump to get some height advantage, misjudged and slid down right into the enemy). 2. I try to use the jump system and such to evade the enemies attacks and get better position, but the guidance system takes some skill to come down where you want. Sometimes I miss the mark and end up right in the midst of the enemy. I'm using a primarily biotic configuration at the moment. Not sure I entirely understand how the "swapping configurations" thing works at this time. Will delve deeper tonight. Mainly I'm just looking for tips on getting the upper hand a bit more in combat (you know, and maybe not dying quite so much ).

Hey.
A few tips:
1 - Don't be afraid to tone down the difficulty, especially initially, until you have a better grasp of the combat.
2 - Try and find a combo that works for you. A combo = two abilities; a PRIMER and a DETONATOR; when triggered they cause a devastating amount of damage which can really sway the tide of battle. Read through your abilities and try and pick out a combo that you like; the game tells you which ones can be combo'd.
3 - Upgrade your weapons and gear via the Research and Development station on the Tempest. It's quite a convoluted, bullshit system, but once you get the hang of it you can craft some pretty awesome stuff.
Good luck.

I find that cover isn't as important as it was in MET. I still use it in case I need to quickly generate shields, but, honestly, the jetpack + dodge combo is a lifesaver. It takes quite a while to get used to, but eventually you'll get there! As for playing as a biotic, make sure you have a way to deal with armor and shields! They will be your biggest pain. Make sure you're setting up combos (pull + throw, singularity + throw, etc). For CC, just singularity everything that doesn't move then detonate it with a throw.

The game is not a corridor shooter like ME1/ME2/ME3 were.
Enemies are going to dodge, jump and flank you. That means you need to learn to do the same (aka move) and manage your battlefield (i.e. prioritize enemies based on the danger they represent). Those ammo/power cell and health/shield crates, try to notice them fast at the start of a fight and use your consumables. Learn about combos (primer and detonator, example singularity and pull are primers, lance and throw are detonators), learn to use the jetpack (jump, dodge and hover). Learn to use the squad commands to prioritize enemies.
Also, if you land on a pack of enemies, hold the melee button as you fall.

Your biggest problem appears to be map awareness.
The combat map is 3-D, not linear so you need to position properly
If ambushed, note where enemies are coming from and retreat to a cover point to start off. If you're the one entering enemy territory, scout first before blitzing.
In either case, a generally safe strategy is to knock out threats in this priority.
1) Melee enemies 2) "Summoners" 3) Basic Mobs 4) Shielded/Armored enemies 5) Bosses
An example of 1 are the animals. Kill them first as they pose the most immediate threat.
After that, try to kill the enemies that spawn more enemies. You'll know what I'm talking about.
After that's done, kill the weaker mobs first to give yourself more space. Examples are the "Chosen". The more mobs there are, the more likely they are to try to attack you in cover, so you want to minimize that by thinning their numbers. They tend to stay under cover if they don't have the numbers.
Kill the rest in the end. Try to avoid them as much as possible.
When you get more familiar with combat, you can break that order and just kill whatever makes the most sense to you at a given time.

I went vanguard route.
I've invested fully in: Passives: COMBAT FITNESS, COMBAT TOOLS, SHOTGUN, OFFENSIVE BIOTICS, CONTAINMENT Abilites: ANNIHILATION (aoe, also lifts non shielded normal enemies into the air, rendering them useless in the end of the skill tree.) NOVA (aoe) CHARGE (last point, you can select where it restores 50% of your shield every time you use the ability.)
Disciple shotgun, and the kett fire sword... thing.. That's great vs armored people. With this, it's pretty much easy mode in normal. While your team is screaming "we're in trouble" the enemies are already dead, and you're never close to dying... Unless a fiend grabs you and does the instakill. =/
This is early in the game, when I chose backlash instead of Annh.

Yea, I combat flows very different than before. Sitting in cover gets me killed a lot faster than if I was kiting the enemy.

In situations as depicted I just exploit the AI. Get some distance out in the open and pick them off one by one. I'm on insanity and it works every time. The AI isn't very bright when you're not close. It's not good at chasing you down.

I have not yet played a biotic, I like to use semi automatic assault rifles and pick enemies off. I found that I can still do it in ME:A, you can still stay in cover and pick them off but you have to stay alert of your surroundings because the AI tries to flank you, and sometimes in tight spaces with little room to maneuver, you simply have to stand and fight and try to pick off the weaker mobs before they overwhelm you. At the end of the day no matter what build you go for, I always try to make sure I can deal with anything, like shields and armor. Oh and melee is not only viable but encouraged, it's a great way to finish them off especially when they keep hiding in cover.

On Hardcore I'm running with: Incendiary - Tactical Cloak - Overload. Using Cloak to reposition and get out of trouble.
I'll probably map powers in future in a similar way with other Profiles (when I have them)
LEFT = Primer RIGHT = Detonator

The best mid to late game build I've found is Charge (Detonator) Nova (Primer) and Shockwave (Primer AND Detonator). Add the Revenant and Ruzzad, and I'm just melting enemy's faces.
Add in the +50% Shields, -50% health mod to my chest piece, cause Charge and all the biotic passives are pro shields, then a shield Oscillator on both weapons, and on the chest piece, I'm never losing shields anymore.
It looks like: +25% Shields on empty clip +25% Shields on enemy death +50% Shields on charge
Shockwave Primes Shoot Floating Enemies Charge Detonates Nova Reprimes Shoot Floating Enemies Shockwave Detonates Nova Primes Shoot Floating Enemies Charge Detonates Etc...

Currently on Insanity, currently level 24.
I'm Rank 3 soldier profile, focused on Assault Rifles, Fitness, Turbo Charge, Backlash, almost maxed Barrier and incenerate (no points in it yet, maxing out Barrier first).
Only problem is getting a decent gun.

...As for playing as a biotic, make sure you have a way to deal with armor and shields!... This is my main gripe with biotics in ME:A. In the trilogy, we had Warp to deal with armor but someone had the bright idea to remove Warp from this game. Does anyone know of good biotic ways of dealing with armor? The only thing I can think of is detonating a Singularity close to an armored enemy but I haven't tried it yet.

Early game insanity as a vanguard has been fucking brutal so far. This is how insanity should be not the laughably easy nonsense of ME3. The jet pack and dodge combo becomes incredibly useful as you get used to it.

Maximum charge, maximum shotgun, maximum combat fitness, maximum barrier (to be read in the crysis voice)
I am gonna add shockwave too for crowd control and a good melee weapon

-Andromeda is harder than any other game in the trilogy. Don't be afraid to tone down the combat; I find Hardcore to be pretty much as hard as ME2 Insanity which was the hardest Mass Effect experience yet.
-The jet pack (or biotic jumps). Learn it, love it, it WILL save your bacon countless times. Enemies have a hard time hitting you as you airdash, use that to your advantage. Backlash can also save you.
-Be aware of your surroundings. The Compass can be handy for that. Enemies can and will flank you if given a chance. Don't stay glued to cover, that's a good way to die.
-I was able to craft a N7 Valkyrie rifle and a Krogan Hammer with the components I found on Eos. These two weapons have proven very powerful, so check to see if you can't craft something that would help you.

On insanity I'm playing a tanky Sentinel with an assault rifle, Incinerate + Overload for combos and Backlash for laughing at enemies as they kill themselves, those "machine gun" guys are particularly hilarious.
If you're struggling try to find a 3 ability combo that you like and focus exclusively on it so you can max it fast and start taking passives.

There are a couple of builds so far that I've seen work nicely.
- Sentinel w/ Backlash/Overload/Incinerate. Overload for anti-shield and Incinerate for anti-armor. Pretty simple. Backlash is something I use when I'm trying to get to cover while DPS-ing the enemy, or if an Anointed flanks me. This is a pistol-heavy build for minimal point investment in Combat, with the Hornet and either Talon, Carnifex, or Ushior. Pistol Rank 6 is aimed damage over unaimed damage.
- Explorer w/ Concussive Shot/Incinerate/Pull. Pull allows you to grab enemies out of cover (I almost never pull them back to me) and is also a primer for Concussive Shot. I have Incinerate in this build to also detonate. I branched out to AR/Pistol, and currently running Sweeper/Valkyrie with Hornet/Ushior/Carnifex. You could also drop Incinerate for either Lance or Backlash, but Pull actually curves around much better than Incinerate or Concussive Shot when you have the AOE upgrade.
This is me playing on Insanity. You really have to optimize your build. Pick your main 3 powers, making sure you have at least one combo, then drop a ton of points on passives.
