I've only had a chance to play the game for a few hours and I wasted most of that time on character creator (typical), so I don't exactly know how the crafting system works yet. I've also picked up a lot of loot, but the inventory is greyed out... I really hope it's not restricted to your ship alone.
Anyway the reason I ask is because I strongly dislike the thermal clips of ME2 & 3 (and since when are they called "Ammo"?) and because I'd like to start the game on Insanity, and not having to worry about ammo is very important from what I've experienced so far.
So there you go, is that something that you can acquire within the first 5 or so hours or is it super rare that I might finish half the game and still not have it at that point? Has anyone managed to acquire it yet?

I got one on the station from a container I think.. you can save-scum at a loot container until you get one.. but honestly, it is a horrible mod - especially on insanity. An avenger seems to fire maybe 10-12 rounds before overheating for far too long.. it drastically reduces your ability to kill things in a reasonable time frame... I would only ever use it as a last-ditch weapon if all my other weapons were empty... but honestly I find equipping 3 weapons (3 pistols or smgs especially) to be be pretty great.. excellent ammo supply.. just keep swapping to the next pistol / smg when your current one runs out.
The heat sink seems to exist for nostalgia rather than functionality.

More importantly, what happens on overheat? Does it automatically begin cooling down after a short delay regardless of what you do like in ME1? Or is it that godforsaken press reload, don't move and pray to the Ice Gods mechanic of ME3?

Really early. I got one just after the first mission on eos or maybe it was during that mission? Either way it wasn't long in. I didn't make mine I found it. So just be sure to explore early on, you'll find it.

So far I've been forced to rely on auto-saves. What exactly is considered a priority mission? Main quest? Can I save manually anywhere else?

Vintage isn't completely useless. In my experience , its best on weapons with a real short clip size, like the widow. It'll overhear after one shot, yes, but the overheat animation is fairly quick, only about three seconds, which is about how long the widow takes to reload anyway.

It can be bought for research points on the Tempest without prerequisites. I had enough research point by the middle of the second planet, so like 10h into the game.

Yes, it automatically cools down regardless of what you do - like use powers or dodge (cant reload while dodging sux). It does cut your clip size by 50%. I find it most useful on Vanguards. Use it on the DASH shotgun which has loads of damage and only a clip size of 2 to begin with. Then trade clip size penalty for Melee Damage Charge in Blast them, Melee, dodge/Nova/Shockwave and it will be ready for use. Since I dont have the Claymore... this is the closest.

I can see that being useful for sniper rifles too. They don't have much of a clip size either, and don't carry a whole lot of rounds normally

I used it in early game on the Widow, which has a clip size of 1. It overheats immediately after each shot for about 3-4 secs. It has its uses especially for people who like to explore, and not have to worry about looking for ammo crates all the time. Those crates are easy to find when you are doing priority missions though. From what I remember during testing, the Widow reload time was pretty much the same as the overheat, so it was pretty neat not having to worry about ammo and reloading. Not OP but not useless either, it's a viable alternative for those that like it.

Get some Remnant guns instead? I have mostly only read the descriptions, but they all seem to work with the cooldown mechanic instead of requiring ammunition heat sinks. I do have the Equalizer SMG in MP. Very effective short to medium range weapon, cools down really quickly, even if you overheat it.

I recommend trying the VHS with powerful, single shot weapons, or combining it with an extended magazine mod on a high fire-rate weapon like the Revenant or Soned. I've seen some folks in QA find other interesting uses for it, but those two are where I've had the best experiences personally.
Note for folks experimenting: When you dismantle a weapon you've crafted, you can get the augs you put into it back.

As others said, the penalty attached to this mod makes it fairly useless for most weapons.
Even with the Dahn shotgun, you will need two shots for most enemies, and getting this mod will force you into the overheat animation after one shot. Even if you are relying on powers, you might as well just use the Dahn as it is, there are ammo crates around and you will never really ran out.
In short, not really worth it as it is. Maybe only for the Widow.
Edit: That said, I haven't experimented with adding clip size mods or other mods in conjunction with the Vintage Heat Sink. Adding Clip Size mods does not work. Adding this to the Gahn Shotgun is useful for Vanguards who keep moving and dodging in and out of combat because you cannot reload while dodging.

That'll make me more likely to craft stuff. Any chance you could list the advantages/disadvantages of using Electrical Conduits or converting a weapon to beam weapon? The descriptions don't actually say how they'll help/hinder you. Presumably they'll do more damage to shields, but I wonder if they're worse in some ways.

Adding Clip Size mods does not work. Adding this to the Gahn Shotgun is useful for Vanguards who keep moving and dodging in and out of combat because you cannot reload while dodging. Is a weapon modded with a VHS going to lose heat while dodging / using powers / melee? Yip.

Shepard took down the human reaper with it . Anyway, I assume bonuses with "Spare ammo" and "Reload speed" would be completely useless when using VHS, while "clip size" bonuses would increase the amount of shots you can take before overheating? or are all 3 simple useless with VHS? I imagine clip size bonus on VHS should work similar to heat sink mods from ME1.

I put the VHS on the Pathfinder Pioneer AR with the extended mag and I actually enjoy the results, but my next weapon with it will definitely be a sniper rifle. I'm so glad we get the augs back on dismantle though. That's a big relief.

I put VHS on a Ishray and Revenant with added a clip size mod and I must say I'm really enjoying them now. When I read all the negative comments about VHS I assumed it would take 6+ seconds to cool down, but it's just 3, so it's worth it IMO. I'm also quite fond of the Remnant P.A.W. which is heat based natively. So yeah thanks again for giving us this Aug Bioware. If only it was present in ME2.
