I'm considering purchasing the game. However I have a few questions about the squad mechanics I would like to clear up before I lay my money down.
I've played mass affect one and two, however didn't get close to completing them.
But I love games where you get to control the squad. And enjoyed ME2 specially being able to give individual orders to my squad mates.
So, how are the squad mechanics in this game?
my main queries are,
1) if you tell one of your squad mates to defend or hold a position, will he stay put until you tell him otherwise? Because in ME2 I was able to position my squad mates, maybe one to the right the other on the left flank and set up cross fires.. it was simple but really cool.
2) can you no longer customise your squad mates look in terms of armour and weapons ??

You can potition your squad, there are skill points to be spent on your squad also. I have no idea about the armor and weapons. But you need to buy this game, it's one amazing space experience! Got no way to prove it!

Squad mates can be directed still - individually or together, and from my experience they will remain in position until called back.
You level them up by choosing what skills to put their skill points into.
You don't control them in battle, they act completely independently, you control your Ryder.
You don't change their appearance, weapons or armour.
Prior to getting the game I wasn't happy with the changes as I used the squad powers a lot in the trilogy. After playing the game - I honestly haven't missed it so far.
For what it's worth I can't recommend the game enough, I am absolutely loving it. 😁

I'm finding they 'stay put' better than they used you. You can spec their skills, which weapon they use / getting dressed is their choice.

... You don't change their appearance, weapons or armour. ... their skill is also limited to three active skills and two passives.. I think this is because of the profiles they implemented in the game.

You said you DONT?? 1) Can you choose to go alone or do you have to take your squad at all times? 2) I've seen the invisibility ability -- is it viable to use stealth?

Aw, I wanted to toss Pibbi a decent top to wear. There is so much pinky stuff in this game.

I suggest you wait for a few patches to be released. The game is in very... bad condition currently. It might get cheaper too.

So you CAN control them in battle... ? You said you DONT?? You can tell them to hold a certain position, and you can tell them which enemies to attack. You can no longer tell them what specific power to use.

There's very little control. You can position them...on either flank for example, but that's about it. They are fairly smart in support, triggering combos that you've primed. They're also more robust than in previous games, I think I've only had to revive twice 35 hours in, (a mix of normal and hardcore difficulty). No customization, though you can bet alternate outfits are coming via DLC. Personally, I never really used squad commands in previous installments, so the reduced control doesn't really impact my play style. I would say the real question you need to answer to purchase is if you're willing to invest 50-100 hours into a game. It's damned addicting and the combat is up there with TW3 in terms of diversity and sophistication.

Till combat ends. 2) Es you can't customize them.

Appreciate the replies... that's cleared a few things up...
So can you go solo and leave them behind if you choose or do you have to do bring them along for every mission??

I haven't tried since they are actually detonating my primers now so I now find them useful. Edit: I went into the game to check and there is a tether on the "hold" so they will come if you get too far away and you must take a full squad with you.

How far is the tether roughly??
I hate that kind of stuff --- if it's far enough to flank around behind the enemy whilst the other two hold in position and lay down fire!
If it's like 50 yards forget it!

Does anyone know? Roughly...?
Arfter you tell your squad to HOLD POSITION..?
Because I've played games where the tether distance isn't very long and as you flank around behind an enemy you stray too far from them (even a short distance) and in the middle of a firefight your squad will leave their positions and run to where you are -- irmts highly annoying.... and messes up any strategy you might otherwise carry out.
I just wanted to make sure that this game is t like that!
