I'll admit that I've never lifted weights in my life - I wouldn't even know where to start. The start really isn't rocket science, go to a good gym and let a certificated trainer check your body for muscular imbalances + skeletal problems and teach you all the basics. Its really damn important to know how to brace your core to protect your spine, how to keep your back straight during heavy lifts and how to ''pack'' your shoulders to avoid injuries. Once you know the basics the trainer should give you a starter training schedule, spot you a couple of days to make sure your form is correct and thats it, you're set. Or get a boyfriend/girlfriend who lifts, thats cheaper and better.

does working in a factory for summer holidays count? you even get paid to do the workout I did lift about 216 racks each weighing about 7ish kg full of pork chips, each at different heights just today! I can lift the tv remote off the table. Yes, I was made to believe there would be balloon animals here? One giraffe pls. You can have a giraffe.....if you can lift it over your head. Finally used my new emoticons in one comment!

I don't do weight lifting but I do reformer pilates. Been doing this at least twice a week for a while now Looks a bit like this. It really targets the muscles all over the body including the ones that are underused such such as triceps, obliques, inner thigh muscles and glutes. I had lower back pain for a while from accidentally slipping on concrete but since I started doing pilates I haven't had the pain since. It is also great for balance. As we get older, we tend to lose our balance and flexibility. Pilates can really help with that. It may seem like an exercise for chicks but I really recommend it for anyone I guess it does contain some of the aspects that weightlifting has. Pilates is also resistance training but you can adjust the springs depending on how much strength and flexibility you have. I can already see the added benefits of having a leaner and more toned body. Gives me motivation to wake up at 7am and walk to my gym! After stopping Taekwondo (did it for 8 years), I sometimes have a bit of trouble with muscle endurance (my muscles get tired easily). So I think it will greatly help me with a bit of rock climbing and hiking I do on the side ^^

I haven't been doing much for the past three months, in minor part for the heat and in big part because I had bronchitis which led to some complications (since I suffer from asthma since I was 6) and now I'm also full of corticosteroids. The biggest issue is that, even with medications, my breathing has fallen to about 90% (spirometry result), it used to be around 120%. I get tired a lot easier, so I have to limit what I can do, but I'm still keeping fit as much as I can.

I just updated OP. I go to the gym myself regularily. Not the heavy weight lifting but the lighter kind with the Dumbbells and I also work on my entire body once I'm there with the different machines. Don't want or have huge muscles, just want to stay fit and healthy xD

Not in a million years! 103 kgs? That's impressive! Thank you. Without wanting to boast, I have -compared with the rest of me- unnaturally big strong shoulders. Its not so visible in the pic but compared to the rest my shoulders are huge. Also I simply love picking something heavy up and lifting over my head, which helps a lot in terms of motivation. The rest of my lifts are relatively average for my level @ 185cm 103kg. You can pick me up and lift me over your head any day

I've met a handful of people, both men and women, in my life that were simply naturally gifted and built for lifting, sadly they did not realize their potential. Big joints, large wrists, wide shoulders, some of them were as strong as a normal person who has been lifting for two years and they didn't even realize that until I pointed it out..... They could have exceeded in weight lifting I'm sure. Wasted potential always makes me kind of sad. And yes, I get reeeally grumpy if I have to skip my daily weight lifting routine.

I used to work out a lot back in high school, especially in my senior year. I was a skinny little guy but bulked up quite a bit and tried to continue the workout thing on and off for years after graduating. After a while though I started slacking and gained weight from all the mountain dew I used to drink everyday. Then I got hired as a dishwasher and lost about 30lbs. I felt good enough again to pick back up serious lifting and exercising. I started investing money in an olympic weight set, bench press, even a punching bag. Worked out my abs for a while and got a good six pack going. Now all that stuff is in the basement collecting dust at my parents' house. Haven't touched it in years. I rarely do anything now because after being on my feet all day at work five days a week I'm too exhausted to do anything. The last thing I want to do is try to workout. I've gained a bit of weight again over the past 5 or 6 years (I blame my sister for getting me an xbox360 and making me lazy ) but I'll still occasionally break out the curling bar or go for long walks on my days off from work. I still have rather defined abs but they are blocked by a gut. My biceps are still toned as well since I'm constantly picking heavy things up at work (5 gallon pickle buckets are quite the workout routine) I've got a month long vacation coming up and in that time I plan on trying to get back in shape and dieting but we'll see what happens.

You most likely weigh less than what I use to warm up for my lifts but your offer as living barbell is much appreciated ma'am. Sounds like a lot of fun though! "Honey you need to gain some weight. You're too easy to lift now." Well, what can I say? I like my women like I like my weights. Heavy, cold and humbling. (not true BTW, I like them fit, tall and warmhearted ) Anyway, my least favorite exercise is the barbell squat. I still love it but as soon as I go above 160kg / 350lbs the barbell starts to dig into my back really good and squishes the skin between the bar and my my sadly very prominent neck vertebra. So whenever I squat heavy for a couple sets it hurts,....but you can get used to anything. I'll buy a safety bar once I can afford it.... I rarely do anything now because after being on my feet all day at work five days a week I'm too exhausted to do anything. The last thing I want to do is try to workout. . Its a well known phenomenon that as soon as you get used to weight lifting and exercise routine in general you wont lose any energy anymore. Your body simply has to adjust and learn to provide you with extra energy. When I started doing sports on a daily basis I was trashed and had no energy to do anything but work and lift. It took me a long time (nearly 2 years) to adjust but nowadays when I go cycling or weight lifting I feel no lack of energy afterwards. Its just become...routine and my body knows it. I have a full time job too but I do 2 hours of weight lifting 6 days a week and its no problem at all. A healthy diet is also important. You just have to work out and get ''into the groove''.

Just my two cents. I lift, run, do core. Started in 8th grade, pretty much kept at it ever since. Never did anything extreme, but have kept at it ... which is the key. Modest weights, modest running distances (unless I'm training for a marathon) and modest core workout. Tuck that in with trying to eat a healthy diet ... no fads ... make sure you get enough protein, fiber, vitamins, minerals and complex carbs for your activity level. I prefer a diet modestly low in fat, modestly low in sugar ... so what I eat is a bit less calorie dense.
Seems to work pretty well for the long haul. My "gym" is in my basement. "Going" to the gym can be a barrier for long term "stick-to-it-ness" ... but down 15 stairs and walk 15 steps and I'm at the gym. Nothing fancy, but gravity works just fine with what I've got. Over the years, have upgraded the bars, the bench, but using the same plates. Better to have a modest workout that you stick with, year after year, decade after decade ... than something you can't keep doing once you're past your early 20s and life has gotten a bit more complicated.
Some Shelterites have already posted here, probably wondering where I was at, given the threads I've made in various forums. Thing is, nothing I say is going to get someone to exercise and eat healthy ... they either are or they are not. Also, I'm not a fan of "the one true way" ... there are different ways to get to the same objectives. Some are better than others, many are better for some folks, but less so for others. Over the years, I've found what seems to work for most people ... but in the end, it is down to the individual and their desire to stick with a healthy lifestyle. Don't try to arrange your life around a workout routine. When your life changes ... and it will change ... figure out how to fit exercise and diet into your new life so that it becomes your routine. Don't let it become onerous.
Best advice I can give ... stay away from fads ... both in diet and exercise ... and find something that fits into your life ... and stick with it for the long haul.

Yes, as soon as someone is giving you advice in lifting and he or she is telling you ITS THE ONLY WAY! you now they're an idiot. There is only a few things in lifting that are true and false, like how to perform certain lifts safely (form) and that the big five exercises should be in any lifting schedule. Everything else is pretty much open, you should experiment a lot to find out what works for you and to find your own way. For example I tried high frequency training and it just did not work because I could not regenerate anymore - but I know tons of people who have lots of success with it. People are individuals.
Same here. If I went to a gym I would not have the time nor the discipline to drive there back and forth every_single_day, thats why I bought some equipment and set up everything in my living room. No excuses for skipping training when you basically sitting next to your own gym. The downside is, many people need motivation in form of having other people around working out, if you are a very social person lifting alone might not be for you. As for equipment, I only have a bench, a rack, two dumbbells, a barbell, a curl barbell, a ladder /swiss bar and about 300kg in weights. Thats basically it and all I need. Also, I use some wooden plates to protect the floor from the weights. Dropping 250kg on a concrete floor is bad.

Here you can discuss everything within weightlifting, fitness, workout etc. Solve your manly, macho, feminine competitions and settle all your arguments within, or simply discuss the wonderful world of the healthy life form we call WORK OUT or whatever..... LOL. You don't have to be active in it already, you can seek advice from others who are. Post pictures and everything!!! EDIT: I should probably mention that I go to the gym regularly myself, not the heavy weight lifting kind cause I don't want to have lots of muscles (don't have them either) but I like to stay fit and healthy, so I do the lighter form of weight lifting with the Dumbbells and then I work on my entire body with the different machines xD Like you i want to stay fit and healthy to so i fitness and swim a lot and i also do a little weightlifting but not to much though
