Depends, using your full body to move as much weight as possible is an important thing to learn to gain strength, trying to isolate muscle groups is the best way to build muscle. A power lifter has to incorporate both techniques into his exercise routine to get truly strong. If you want to move heavy weights but you don't know how to use your entire body to do it you will be weak, if you are always using your entire body for every single exercise you will be weak because muscle growth is limited. I use both techniques and I've become very strong. I'm talking about things like bicep curls where the person is hoisting around huge amounts of weight but using their back and swing momentum rather than controlled form that will indeed work the biceps mostly.

If you do specific isolation exercises and jerk and jump around to be able to move around more weight all the time, well, that makes little sense because then its not isolation workout anymore. Though having said that, using back and swinging techniques when doing biceps curls is not always necessarily a bad thing, if used sensibly this technique CAN be used to break plateaus. Many competing top level weight lifters bastardize isolations workouts because it works for them.

I'd love to go to the gym but I really feel like I can't anymore because of reasons but that's for a different subject altogether. I really do like the gym atmosphere and could probably spend all day in there. I was considering buying some weights since I can't get the ones I used to have anymore. I doubt Canadian Tire would appreciate me taking one of their carts just so I can carry my stuff home...

I bought all my training equipment in a very large mall and carried the bench and all the 20kg / 45lbs plates in pairs through the mall all the way to the car. Each stint took me half an hour. You simply have to treat it like training.

I don't have a car and I sure as hell don't want to lug all that crap home and back to and from the store. I don't plan on getting any fancy equipment, just some weights to start out. Also, I'm pretty wimpy so I'd probably die carrying a bench home lol... I don't know, I'll have to look and see what they have to get an idea of what I want to get, they're bound to have some sales by now.

Yes, the average man has more muscle and strength than even a trained woman, also a lot of lifts, especially those that require lots of upper body strength are better suited for men, we don't just have a muscular but also skeletal bonus. Wide shoulders and bigger joints make pressing stuff much easier. Generally speaking, a woman who has been lifting rigorously for a couple of years is about as strong as the average healthy man in most lifts - if said healthy man can perform those lifts correctly with the right technique. Naturally gifted women and those that are really determined in powerlifting can be a little stronger than the average man. Of course, once we enter the steroid and drug territory stuff gets wonky.

To put this in perspective, even one of the best female arm wrestlers can't beat a relatively well muscled dude. Not even close. Shit I Posted the wrong vid, lol. She actually beats him here.

To be fair, the technique of that dude was horrible, while she kept her arm very close to her body that guy extended his arm way too much, which dramatically increases lever force. She also used her entire body weight, that guy was just sitting there all static. A lot of lifting chicks can beat dudes in various lifts because they have far superior technique and experience with lifting, even though the dudes are physically stronger. In the end, strength is a composition of muscle mass, technique, CNS connection and good 'ole practice.

I've not lifted much at all so I'm no expert. But what of Crossfit? I'm kinda fascinated by it. It looks crazy but also effective. Then I ran into this video:
It seems there's no way in hell they're natural. But I think the random nature of the Crossfit routine would be very effective. Even back in my highschool fitness class, this was the theme. Don't do the same thing over and over.

Then I ran into this video: It seems there's no way in hell they're natural. But I think the random nature of the Crossfit routine would be very effective. Even back in my highschool fitness class, this was the theme. Don't do the same thing over and over. Crossfit is the perfect example of that mixing two great things together does not always result in something super great. They took great old school circuit training and great weight lifting exercises but twisted them in a way they're neither really effective nor healthy. Its kind of a tragedy, really. Its like saying sugar is awesome and salt is awesome, lets mix them together. And about them not being natural: crossfit is an extreme hype nowadays, and hype means money. Crossfit gyms, trainers and equipment are notoriously expensive so what do they do to get people to buy their stuff and join their gyms? Tons of flashy marketing, and in the sports industry marketing means taking extremely buff not so natural athletes to show people what they can achieve with their super awesome stuff. (Which they can't) The sad story is, they're not just full with growth hormones and roids, no, those token athletes gained their muscle and strength from regular weight lifting routines, and not from cross fit, cross fit is just for show and thats what they're paid for. Its just ripping off naive people, thats all it is. It's a business. And one more thing about drugs, since their goal is to target women and men equally (women have cash too) the female athletes are on growth hormones and not steroids, so they still look feminine but inhumanly buff. One giveaway for growth hormones is big bellies despite showing razor sharp abs. Growth hormones don't just make the muscles grow, the guts grow too. (which is, as you can imagine, problematic) Sometimes I'm amazed that I was able to dodge all the weird training hypes, rip-offs, and drugs. I saved myself from tons of frustration, wasting time, injuries, health problems and an empty wallet. I started with oldschool free weight strength training right away and boy, now 12 years later I have to say it was such a wise decision.

I ran around with 200 pound men on my back, does that count? Fucking Santa is running around with a 200lbs bag over his shoulder. And hes a really old fat dude. Real man do it with 400kg / 880lbs Just kidding, its a good achievement but its something a Marine should be able to do with ease. Carrying your comrade around fast in case he is hurt is a very crucial ability. Never trust a buddy who isn't strong enough to carry you.

I probably could've fireman carried a heavier guy, but buddy dragging them was another story unless I grabbed them by the shoulder straps of their flak, then it was easier. On another note, we had a retired power lifter in my platoon that could bench 900 pounds.

On another note, we had a retired power lifter in my platoon that could bench 900 pounds. Dragging is always a problem if your bodyweight is low, you can be really strong but if you're very light you can't get the power onto the ground. Thats why the fat, heavy strongmen do so well in dragging cars and trucks, compared to lighter athletes who really struggle despite being equally strong. Also 900 bench is close to the world record, BUT don't forget thats geared bench - which means they wear special suits and a ''slingshot'', which does add about 200-300lbs to what they could bench raw, without gear. Thats the special shirts they wear to help getting the weight up:

But I think the random nature of the Crossfit routine would be very effective. Even back in my highschool fitness class, this was the theme. Don't do the same thing over and over. It really depends on what your fitness/performance goals are. For most athletes, adding in a Crossfit-style workout once a week is probably beneficial. But the gym memberships are pretty expensive, and it's hard to justify $150 a month or more for something used that infrequently. Doing it more than that -- well, you'll be good at doing Crossfit. But it won't develop sport/activity-specific skills or increase your cardio/endurance level. Admittedly, I used to drink the Crossfit/paleo diet koolaid -- and I won't pretend that I didn't benefit in some ways from that. But I'm leaner and fitter now than I was when I was doing that, so, ::shrug::

I did deficit deadlifts today (no lifting belt), meaning a regular deadlift with the bar set much lower so its a lot harder to lift. I love this exercise, it builds good starting strength, regular height deadlifts feel so much lighter after that. With a normal bar height the bar would be mid-shin, but the deficit deadlift starts barely above the ankle, making the lift considerably harder. :dumb: You can even make it even harder with a very wide grip but this kind of hurt my wrists so I don't do that very often. Did a couple of repetitions with 215kg / 473lbs

Today I did 150 kg / 330lbs calf raises, thats having a heavy barbell on your back and you stand on your toes. I could have probably gone with way higher weights, I think 200 kg / 440lbs for 8 reps would have been absolutely doable but I'm too afraid of damaging my Achilles tendon. Anyway, its such a relaxing and great exercise after squats.
