MEA is complained about because it has just kinda steamrolled into being a meme, which blows major cock because its a hell of a game. It feels way too natural on an intuitive level regarding the quest system and menus to me for it to get the hate it is getting. I actually really like how the journal especially is compartmentalized into different sections - it makes navigating quests really easy. Too bad most people don't see it that way, which is a damn shame. Like people are genuinely getting lost in how many menus there are in this game, which shows that the general public is borderline illiterate. I didn't find it overwhelming at all. I found it neat that I get to poke around so many menus which shows the depth this game has to offer. IDK it could just be me that I am an ultra nerd/geek, but I love spending time just looking in the different menus contemplating what I want to do next. Its fun for me to poke around in the inventory and journal and plan my next objective whether that be crafting, quests or dialog.
I really like that this game has a ton of tiny rewards that keep coming in, like cryopod rewards that come in on a timely basis. I love the cryopods perks and the feeling of accomplishment when you finally after so long get to unfreeze a new group of people or finally are able to make a settlement or getting to explore an entirely new planet that is completely different than the last. Obviously, the reuse of creatures is noted as a somewhat negative thing and I would really like there to be a good reason for chests and ammo/power/health boxes, but its a system that works well in the game considering the way combat is played, which is pretty damn stellar if you ask me.
My biggest gripe with the game is prolly pretty superficial to a lot of people, but I just think it sucks that I have infinite loading screens so damn often. It's a real buzz kill to boot up the game only to have to exit out of it and then re-enter the game and pick the next newest save just to see if it loads, and sometimes it doesn't and you have to do the whole process over again. But overall, I like this game a lot better than I thought I would. I have DAI pretty high on the list of games I like and this game tops even that. I also love DAO, but I was indifferent to happy with the way BW games have progressed. BW I want to play you damn game, let me!
The best thing about MEA to me though is prolly the combat. I am playing on Insanity and yes, there have been times where I rage quite... but when I was finally able to be that part of the game I was stuck on for like an hour, it is an absolute joy to know I finally came out victorious. I should mention that I haven't really played many shooters on PC before, so this was a whole new experience trying to learn how to aim with a mouse on top of all these other things I have to keep track of in combat. It is challenging and enjoyable and I can tell I have made some real progress with getting better at actually doing combat. I know this because my first go at the game I decided to play as Sara and there were some parts I thought I would never get past, but then the second time around with Scott, it was way way easier. And that's what I love about games like this kind of fast paced combat that I don't have much experience with: that I can tangibly tell that I am getting better at the game. Part of this is knowing how to invest your Skill Points as well, which just adds a whole other level to this game. Its like every encounter is different and requires little tweaks in strategy that can make the difference between dying and victory. It can simply be finding a different cover spot, or investing in a new Skill to make the difference and I really like that. Its progressive, not streamlined, and its intuitive, not completely the same, and combat flows really really well. Combat is the crown jewel in this already brilliant game.

You know, its really not that different from DAI, and I didn't see a whole lot of people complaining about that system. Want to know why? Because its popular opinion to dislike this aspect of the game. A few guys who played a couple hours of the game said the menu system didn't work and it was such a different observation (mind the pun) that it stuck. I like the journal system because it makes sense to me and because I understand it. If you don't get how it works, then yeah, I can see how some people could complain about it. But its not my problem I have with the game.

Disliked the jounral in the beginning, still not that fond of it, but when I saw the quests were shown on the map and I could activate them there, it was a big ass bonus. It's one of the things that really annoy me with a lot of games, that I can't see where the quests are on the map until I activate them.

...Like people are genuinely getting lost in how many menus there are in this game, which shows that the general public is borderline illiterate... This^ made me laugh because I totally agree with you. I often feel like people complain because it's cool to hate on ME:A and they're just looking for things to complain about. I had no issues with the menus. It played out like most things I do for the first time...initially it was unfamiliar, then I got used to it.

When the game is only meh, every flaw stands out and annoy the player.

When the game is only meh, every flaw stands out and annoy the player. IDK, that is... kinda true? The game got a bad wrap from the press so people are hating on it. Even TW3 had some pretty fucked up shit in that game regarding glitches and the like. Like rolling down stairs. That was pretty retarded if you ask me. My theory is that the marketing failed to deliver the things the press wanted to see, and since the game was not properly discussed leading up to release, people had at the very least no frame of reference for what to expect regarding the game, which lead to people being confused about what to expect which lead to people finding faults with the game that are either kinda the norm for big open world games, or just people wanting to LOL at something at something else's expense. It was basically the perfect storm in terms of not giving people what they were expecting and people misconstruing what the game was about. The why's for what is done in this game are completely lost. The menus were done the way they were done so that people didn't have like literally close to 100 different quests to look at in a single menu. They basically made a system that works very similarly to how Windows folders operate... Windows has been around a while and its pretty accepted that it work for an OS.... so why not a game? That is what has me baffled.

Yes, the map markers are the saving grace of the quest management system. Apart from that, I understand the annoyance. It's not that I can't work with the journal, but it's so damned time-consuming to find your quests for one location if they're spread between priority missions, character quests, planet-specific content and additional tasks.

I actually do use that function quite a bit. If you take the time to look at your map, you can simply click on the nearest available quest marker to complete the quest... then it will pop up on your radar so you can get there really quickly. This too functions the same way as DAI.

If you want to go directly to a place on the map, a marker highlighted with a different color would be good. Similar to the marker used in DAI. Having the marker slightly bigger doesn't really help. You can use the radar for that You can get an approximation to the location by looking at where it is on the map in relation to where you are. Then you just go towards the direction in the compass.

Then you just go towards the direction of the compass. yeah. I'd rather have a separate marker. ME also had that. Makes it easier. You can also place a custom map marker just beyond where the quest marker is in case there are multiple quest locations and you want to get to to closest one.

You can also place a custom map marker just beyond where the quest marker is in case there are multiple quest locations and you want to get to to closest one. How Lets say your target location is 200m directly north of you. You will in that case click on the map 225m directly north of you. This will align the custom map marker with the quest map marker (or close enough) so you will have a direction to go that leads to the closest quest map marker if you have multiple. Its not ideal... you should be able to place a custom map marker on top of a quest map marker, but this still does the trick.
