I thought the female preset 9 was Caucasian. Regardless, she certainly isn't black. (???) I created this with preset 9: And this is my dad: I don't care if my dad is black - I can roll with the idea that he adopted two white babies. (I used the twin preset that is that blond guy with the square jaw and pointy eyebrows. I changed his hair color to brown, though. And I changed his eyes to match mine.) What I don't understand is that... why put such strict limitations on the CC so that "Alec can look like you" when .... Alec doesn't even look like you?! What's the point? If you choose a preset and you are barely allowed to customize it so that Alec is generated to look like you... then... why doesn't he match the strictly limited customizations? And furthermore, how is female preset 9 black? She looks nothing like a black woman. If she's mixed... she's definitely pulling a Rashida Jones at best. The lighting is so poor in the CC that who can even tell? Again... I have no problem with actually having a black Alec Ryder. I have a problem with the CC being so damn limited. If I can design a white woman (using a preset) who ends up with a black father, then why can't I have full fledged freedom to custom design a (any color) woman who will end up with a (any color) Alec Ryder? Edit: The funniest thing is that I designed the female Ryder to look as close to *me* as possible. I'm not black - just a brunette... (For some reason the Caucasian presets are blond, I'm told. Are brunettes not allowed to be Caucasian?) I'm sorry but the whole concept of "Alec looks like you!" is so asinine to me... because he **doesn't** look like my character, ergo I would really like more freedom to design my hero the way I want... (Alec could be a Turian for all I care. They adopt, I assume.) Edit: Ok... that would be way too cool if your dad was a Turian who adopted you. Let's patch in Turian-dad. And again... for reiteration's sake: Not upset that he's black. I'm upset that the CC is limited (claimed to be so limited for the sake of "having Alec look like you!" when he doesn't.) I just want a nice, big open CC so I can create a gorgeous protagonist. And her parents can be purple for all I care. /rant |

Technically, the father appears mixed-ethnicity (white+african or perhaps asian+african) - and the mother in preset 9 also appears to be either of asian descent or possibly south american... it is initially slightly confusing (as I used the same preset with line skin tone), but mixed ethnicity of a parent certainly explains it... but Alec does not appear to be of "pure" african descent (his hair is a key giveaway.. that kind of straight hair is almost unheard of among people of strictly african descent).

Preset 9 looks like a brown-haired white girl. I could argue, as I mentioned above, that she resembles a "Rashida Jones" type of "black" woman. But god... she does not look black. (Hell, Rashida Jones does not look black. If no one knew who the hell Quincy Jones was, no one would know the actress is mixed. She looks white. Her mom's genetics stampeded through that baby like no one's business.) I just wish we had a more open CC. That's my gripe.  |

Look at preset 9 for males - preset 9 is an african male... yet preset 9 is not african female (appears caucasian or south americas maybe.. but not african). I suspect they intended preset 9 to be an african female, just like the preset 9 male is because when you look at the the other presets for male and female, their visible ethnicity is pretty much aligned.. but for some reason preset 9 female was not made african and when the game is deciding who the father is it just picks it based on the preset number, not what your character looks like... and some programmer indicated "preset 9 = african father" .. while a designer made preset 9 female non-african.. so there's that slight disconnect when he is revealed. If you pick preset 9 male though, the resemblance between father and son are clearly evident. |

That is, you chose Sara #9, so Alec looks like Scott #9, and Scott #9 is black (they didn't match the Ryder presets very well). Whether you chose a different preset for your twin makes no difference to what Alec looks like. pretty sure preset 9 is supposed to be mixed race, at least as default. It's a shame they didn't make dad Ryder's skin tone match your character's seeing as they did that for the eyes.

Your father looks like the male version of what ever PRESET you used. I think they tried to make the male and female resets match up (at least racially), to look like part of the same family. So, if Preset 1 is Asian, then your dad will look like the preset 1 male Asian (whether you play as male or female preset 1 Asian) and he will get whatever eye color you choose. He does not look like your twin, no matter what twin you choose (unless of course you pick the twin from the same preset #). Hope this helps! Eiether way, I agree that it is annyoing. They could have at least had his skin tone match the one you choose, to make it a bit more realistic. |

The problem is that not all the Sara and Scott presets were matched up to look alike. The #5, #6, and #9 presets look quite different from each other, for instance. That means if you choose one of those Saras, Alec will NOT look like you. He will instead look like the matching Scott. (And, of course, if you also end up customizing Scott, then Alec could look like neither of you.) I'm kind of wondering if the developers mis-matched the presets and would be able to fix this issue. |

(Not all of us white folks come from Scandinavia. Lol) The Spanish are not albino, no. But they're not black. They're not asian. They're European. "White." I picked that preset because I thought she looked the closest to me. (I'm a combo of Greek and Sicilian.) No matter which way you splice my genes or try to play up whatever ethnicity I am - I'm a white girl. I'm not albino and, no, my hair isn't blond, but I'm Caucasian. I'm definitely not black or asian, nor are my parents or grandparents. Fem 9 preset didn't look black or asian. Her features are European. She could very well fit right in with a family photo of mine. Her father looked very much black, maybe a mix of Asian as someone pointed out. It's just a failed attempt, is my point. And they sacrificed our CC for it. That's a shame. Regardless, the whole aim to make Alec "match" Ryder failed. Sure it works for some players, but not for everyone. Therefore, the limitations on the CC were shoved down our collective throats in vain. I would've rathered the Ryders were legitimately adopted as canon within the game, which would've (hopefully) given us 100% freedom to design our characters however we wanted. This whole parent-child thing didn't pan out. It's.......dumb. Yeah. I have no other word for it. It was a dumb decision. |

Yep. I played as FemRyder created Sis and Bro as black. Father turned out black Mom turned out white. I didn't like that at all. I finished the game using new game plus, made sure I used two presets that where black. I customized them to look how I wanted them to look and I ended up with the same parents. Black dad, white Mom.

I don't know if Ellen's changes, but in my game she appeared as I see in other peoples' screenshots. I had my 'Sara' as #3 while leaving Scott as default, and with how dark Ellen is, I think she's actually their step-mum. White: Default, #2, #3. Black: #7, #8, #9. Asian: #1, #4. ?: #5, #6. This is a video game that compromised our CC for the sake of genetic "consistency" between the Ryders. If BioWare tried to argue that genetics skip a generation etc, I would call bs on them. I played an Asian character briefly before this white character. Her twin was Asian and Alec was Asian. I remember the mom being white with red hair. I was like, "Weird....who is that lady?" And it registered later that she's supposed to be their mom. I really wish the Ryders were orphans, adopted by Turians. |

Another unorthodox preset 9 family checking in!  I tried to make Sara at least look related to default Scott, but doing so completely alienated them both from Dad. More awkwardly, when I started the game and I saw Dr Harry on the shuttle in the beginning cinematic, I thought he was Dad. Frankly, I'm still not sure he's not.  |

Female preset #9 is odd to me because my first thought when I saw her was that she's totally based on Stana Katic, who is definitely white. Making her dad one of the black presets is a head scratcher.
