Greetings.
The character that I have in mind is a straight male mage Trevelyan. I have pretty much have everything in place except for the love interest.
He is the scholarly studious type and hence will end up becoming a Rift Mage. He is a deist of sorts when it comes to religion. So he not the faithful praying type.
As for his viewpoints, he is a mix of Aequitarian and Libertarian. If there is a way to have mages to self govern without too much of a conflict or uprising, he is willing to pursue that path but otherwise he is willing to make a few concessions, which is what Aequitarians tend to do. Naturally, he favors diplomacy and subterfuge over outright violence, so he does not approve of the current Mage-Templar conflict very much.
He will probably end up conscripting the Templars (pouring magic into a Mark that we barely understand is not a wise course of action & Templars messed up, so they get disbanded) and not kicking out the Grey Wardens (he does not want to repeat the mistake Ferelden did when they exiled their Wardens and caused a load of ruckus in the Fifth Blight indirectly because of that). As for Orlais, he would have Celene and Briala united with Gaspard out of the way (because he is sympathetic towards Elves and he is no fan of Chevaliers). Lastly, he would let Calpernia go off because Tevinter could use more reformists (and because killing her is not the main goal of the mission, getting the Well is).
The question is who should he romance - Cassandra or Josephine ? Both of them are good choices.
Any advise would be helpful. Have a nice day and cheers.

I'd lean towards Josie with that kind of character, she's all for diplomacy. However he'd work with Cass too if you preferred her. I'd just start playing, flirt with both, and see where the roleplay takes you. I find that my characters start having a mind of their own and I get a gut instinct as to what's right for them after a while.

Playing a straight male, there are only 2 options for love interests, Josephine and Cassandra.
For the playthrough you've described, it seems Josephine would be a good match, but Cassandra could fit too. However, I prefer to use Cass on my more "faith based" playthroughs. Josephine seems to fit more with the "diplomatic scholar" type. Cass could too, I suppose in a more opposites attract kind of way.
If you end up choosing Josephine, I recommend you download the "Elegant Josephine" mod. It improves her look greatly.

I'd also suggest Josephine as she seems more in-line with your Inquisitor's personality.
However, you as the player already know what both of their romances entail. Even if you've never played them yourself before, you've likely read about it on the forums and such. Something to take into consideration is the type of romance that each woman has and how your Inquisitor's behavior will factor into that. Is he the type of man who would be willing to duel for his love, or would he find that whole concept ridiculous? Both of them are very high on the romance factor, but I think the action of the duel is what sets Josephine's romance apart from Cassandra's in terms of the Inquisitor performing a particular action that he might not be inclined to do. A duel is really quite different from reading poetry, and of course he doesn't know that it will turn out as it does.

I think you have to work a bit harder with Cassandra and as a result it is more rewarding to get down to the soft romantic beneath that tough exterior. I felt it was the better of the two male heterosexual romances but still prefer being gay so I can romance Dorian. Cassandra may criticise some of the choices you make but she will still respect you and it won't be a deal breaker. Unlike Sera she doesn't insist on you believing exactly the same as she does. Playing a mage is particularly touching for her romance when you hear about her history.
With Josephine you basically get what you see. She is sweet and pretty easy to romance, notwithstanding the rival suitor. The only thing you need to watch though is Leliana. She is keeping an eye on you so you'd better not break her friend's heart. I remember Isabella threatening to do something quite nasty to me if I hurt Merrill but I'm guessing that would be nothing to what Leliana would do to you if you hurt Josie.

I liked Cassandra romance with my straight mage Trevelyan. She is open minded enough, as I see. I liked that my Trevelyan needed to court her. It was good. (I haven't character, who romanced Josie and I not finished yet the Dorian romance.)

I think Josie would be the best fit, because like your character, she's well educated, diplomatic and comes from a good family. They'll probably have good conversations outside of work and enjoy each other's company. The thing to watch out for is Leliana, because she's protective of Josie and doesn't like to see her get hurt.
Cassandra on the other hand, she's a bit stubborn and wants the ideal passionate romance. I don't think she'll fit well with Mage Trevelyan. Plus her views are the opposite and they'll clash frequently over his choices.
