Yes, I've read about PoP series a little & I might try the rebooted version eventually. I want to see how far I get into the AC games timeline for now.

Altair vas me climbed a bunch of spires, took out archers posted all over the place, and helped a few wretches harassed by the guards. I figured the sullen guy like him will take his chance to kill wherever he can. But climbing more spires did not give him more missions, so at some point I grew impatient and did them. The killing a couple of archers for the informant was a piece of cake, since good old Altair already offed a bunch of them, so what's two more? Eavesdropping is no biggie too, but ye gods, the pickpocketing gotta be the hardest thing they teach in the Assassin school. I littered that alleyway with guards' corpses before Altair finally got the parchment off the guy.
Garner turned out to be the Scary Doc archetype, nothing new there, the what you would expect kindly voiced ruthless old man, stealing souls, etc, but his clinic was so well done. The aggressive madman pushing Altair really got in your face, and even the reuse of the faces, so you see the same grimy patients rushing about screaming gave it even more of eerie feel. I actually got the feeling of being trapped as I was making circles around it with the sages until I spotted the broken window.
Boy, but Altair can leap so well. After the torture that jumping datacron puzzles were in SWTOR, platforming in MEA and in AC is a thrill. Dunno if I am weird, but I get a bit of vertigo when he leaps and lands on narrow beams. His avatar is like 90% of the games' success, I tell ya. Just don't do close ups when he talks...
Oh, oh... and the guards starting to run away from Altair screaming in panic are a nice touch!
Well, okay, I heard Granier's rumbling last words, he mentioned the artifact, and how he is helping the dregs of humanity to escape the prison of their mind, all good, done...
The game took me back to see the Old Boss Man, so I hope I still will get to play Jeurasalem next. And that it reloads from the top of the convo with the Old Boss Man. Heh. Those saves, terrible...

blog.ubi.com/assassins-creed-origins-discovery-tour-shows-different-side-ancient-egypt/"With Discovery Tour, Assassin’s Creed Origins is using the concept of the Animus Database – long one of the most fascinating parts of the series – as a springboard for an entirely new kind of experience. Where the Database was a collection of educational (and frequently snarky) notes on the important people, places, and events that you encounter in each game, Discovery Tour adds an entirely new game mode that turns the massive re-creation of Egypt into a combat-free living museum, with guided tours that let players delve into its history firsthand. " “This is something we’ve wanted to do for a long time, that we’ve been asked to do by teachers, by institutions,” says Jean Guesdon, creative director for Assassin’s Creed Origins. “Discovery Tour is another way to enjoy the beauty of the world we’ve recreated. It’s a more educative mode, so it’s clearly focused on education and on bringing to people actual facts, more academic knowledge. Separate from the main game, Discovery Tour annotates the game world with dozens of interactive tours curated by historians and Egyptologists. Each focuses on a different subject, including the Great Pyramids, the life of Cleopatra, mummification, and more. Additionally, Discovery Tour lets players roam the entire game world without constraints or threats, exploring a sprawling landscape that includes Memphis, Alexandria, the Sand Sea, and the Giza Plateau at their own pace. When you start to tour, you will have a path that will lead you from station to station, in order to learn more,” Guesdon says. “For example, the mummification process, from the cleaning of the body to the removal of the organs, up to the ritual of the opening of the mouth. I hope that teachers will seize this opportunity to present that to their students, so they can learn with this interactive medium. We spent years recreating Ancient Egypt, documenting ourselves, validating the content with historians, with consultants, and we feel that many more people than just the players can benefit from that,” says Guesdon. Discovery Tour will arrive in early 2018 as a free update for Assassin’s Creed Origins, which launches on October 27 on Xbox One, PS4, and PC."

AC does not cover 300 years, right? It is just one protagonist for Italy and he has a normal life-span, correct? Or do they compress the timeline in the games so you see a bunch of major events/historic figures that were separated by decades in recorded history? In the AC1, they seem to be picking chronologic contemporaries as far as my poor memory tells me.

Desmond is living a normal lifespan in modern day times, he gets to live out hundreds of years of history through Altair/Ezio/Connor etc. And the assassins all live normal lifespans as well.

I love this idea that they want to add a discovery mode to the game, where players can just interactively explore Egypt's history: www.vg247.com/2017/09/27/assassins-creed-origins-will-have-a-non-combat-educational-mode/Especially in its early day, the AC series always motivated me to read up on the historical period that the games tool place in. AC2 and Brotherhood with their great databases especially stoked my interest in the European Renaissance period, something we didn't really cover that well back in school. Kudos to them for adding this sort of thing maybe even more elaborately to the latest game. I don't know that much about ancient Egypt either and I imagine it will be very interesting to discover and learn new things about it in this form.

Okay, so I have a day off today, so naturally, I overbooked it with all sorts of chores, but I managed to follow Altair to Jerusalem. No time though to explore much, so I did a couple new missions -interrogation and stealth kill on the streets. The street Kill was tough, and took some trying to get the guard patterns, but very satisfying. Depending on how Altair was walking/running, the stealth kills have different animations. On the walls, he actually pounces. Pretty awesome.
It was the first time I got into the bureau ready to go for the kill, and Malik did not seem to be among Altair's biggest fans (like the Sin poobah in Damascus).
The mission itself was rather trying on the nerves. So, maybe Altair is not my guy, but I still hate it when he gets tossed about by thugs. Well, witha few tries I figured when to attack, when parry -yeah, me this time, Altair does not just auto counter and kill everyone anymore. Then we chased the Slaver guy down through the streets which was real cool.
Now, the dialogues during this 3rd memory sequence start to go into the background a bit more. First, something tips Altair off that some people that are enthralled/enslaved in the Jerusalem-Acre joint op are not unhappy. Not sure where he saw what, to me the game showed but miserable people. Obviously his victims keep telling him they do gods' work and all that jazz for the betterment of the human race. When he brought it up with the Old Boss Man, the guy gave him a pep talk, mentioning how they, the Sins are only rumoured to condition young boys with hashish and pleasures to become the sins.
Well, thing is, the pleasure garden is in the game, though the concubines won't talk to Altair, and the take is a time-honoured exotic detail and, frankly more suitable for the origin story in a video-game than the "we achieve peace via the political assassinations" concoction.
So, it can go two ways. Altair is either confused about his past (the Old Man after all demonstrated ability to mess up his perceptions/memory before, when he thought he was executed) and is just as brainwashed as the opposition, and will eventually figure it out -and either stay loyal or kills his Boss Man - or the Old Boss Man is sincere and the sins are the good guys (slim chances?)
Wishing there were player choices in this game...

@carefull Assassin's Creed is more a story being told. You are just witnessing. Kind of like reading a book or watching a movie. I do like RPG games with choices, but I also enjoy this type of game so long as the story is interesting/keeps me entertained, which I feel AC does pretty well! About Malik in spoiler for ppl who may not have played yet: Malik is one of the 2 people with Altair at the beginning of the game when Altair does everything wrong and everything goes to shit. He is the one that comes to Al Mualim with his arm injured but has the artifact they were after that Altair failed to retrieve. The other person who was with them was Maliks brother and he died. So that's why he isn't friendly to Altair.....but, things change. Because Altair changes. Loving the updates!

Took me three tries to get the Merchant Prince in Damascus. First time, the cutscene did not start properly, leaving Altair stuck in the CS mode, but unable to enter the room where all the nobles gathered. Second time, the game switched to the windowed mode, so all the frantic button pushing started popping up the files and folders all over the game's window, then the game quit... well, it's alt Enter to fix it apparently.
And each time the game implacably returned me to the bureau, so I had to listen to the cutscene and cross Damascus all over again. Except one time when Altair landed on the guard patrol, and that time at least the cutscene was already accounted for.
I sure hope that the next target is not as wordy as the Prince in Damascus. The plot with him was really weird, but at least assassination itself was no brainer when the game functioned, climb, jump, done. I even managed to switch Altair to stealth blade, so it was an instant kill. Love the handler in Damascus, he is funny and seem to like Altair in his own way. Omg, romance confirmed.
Altair had another one of those tense discussions with his Old Boss Man, to drive the point home that he is in doubts. Either I am doing things out of sequence, or Altair is a very confused assassin. He sounded very certain with his victim, but bared his soul to his master. Which he should not be doing if he is actually starting to think he is being misled.

Altair completed the High Profile Acre Assassination, which was the most interesting so far. William was the first target that was neither strictly evil, nor in any way mad.
The follow up conversation between Altair and the Old Boss Man was very disappointing though. Altair started well, very tough, and very determined, but then he backed away even after he saw that he is not going to be killed for asking questions just on the Duh! information that his targets were all a part of a rival Organization for Control Of the Holy Land. It's as much as he knew himself, the Old Boss Man merely supplied a name for it, the Templars. I suppose the game exploits the legend of Templar's corruption and foreshadows the events of the early 1300s of the crackdown on the Order.
Well, back to Jerusalem.

William's assassination was my favorite in the whole game so far. I loved that it involved a cameo by Richard, and the fight against the knights was just epic.
By contrast, save for Malik, who is pretty much my fav character in the game now, Jerusalem target was boring. First I was under the impression that Altair would need to block the way to the accused that were to be executed, so tried to climb down a ladder that led to the platform with the victims. But that only froze the cutscene and I had to restart. So, Altair just walked right in, killed the target... and that was it.
Then he had another banter with the Old Boss Man, and boy, I am just not a fan of Altair. Or maybe the plot is just what you see is what you get, and it is indeed as simple as Templars are Bad Guys, you are a Cewl Assassin, so yay us! Sheesh, I hope not.
What I can't understand is that if there is only one entrance to the Bureau, and that's through the roof, and Malik is one-handed, how on earth does he get in and out, let alone goes about his daily needs?
Back in the present timeline, Ms. Lucy whined about Templars being all evil too & how scared the poor thing is, and Desmond made more sulky pointless statements about how he doesn't know a thing. Apparently, the Assassins are coming to free him. Okay?
Oh, well, back to the good stuff! I mean, the up-close appreciation of the architectural landmarks.

Oh, I thought Rafik was a given name, so I was getting confused why the guy in Damascus and Acre seem to be called the same, but nope, it is a title Anyway, Altair completed the chase after the book-burning scholars in Damascus. Not hard per se, but annoyingly long. Target's monologue is probably the second best for me after William. Ended up in Acre, and I gotta say, initially I did not like Acre much, but since the second round of missions when I got to the sea-side city, it ties for me with Damascus for the Holy Land favorite place. I really don't like Jerusalem. I guess I am a pathetic player, because it takes me way, way longer than the 10-12 hrs people indicated it takes to finish the game on the Internet. Well, I guess they are ace who do every mission the first time, and can turn the market stalks over , don't have to rewatch cutscenes multiple times because of having to quit the game, and stuff. Maybe they don't just climb around to enjoy the architectural details or killing guards like me, heh. better value for me, I suppose. The weather is so terrible here though, that I am hoping to get through Block 5 for sure, and see who remains save for Robert de Sable (spelling?)

Memory block 5 assassination and the character of Sibrund rivals William's for me. The Teutonic knight was believable and his paranoia crisis was top notch. And it was on account of Altair, so bonus points!
But this is also when the game and me as a player started to get on each-other's toes. First of all, during the cutscene, the priest that maddened Sibrund is accusing of being an Assassin is publically pleading for help, and in the game's framework, Altair's in a perfect position to strike the distracted Sibrund & get away with it, while saving an innocent in the process. But the game holds Altair back, Altair the Savior of Many Maidens, Elderly Ladies and Wize Man chance met on the streets.
And yes, the jumping puzzle in the harbour is great, and Sibrund's vs Altair dialogue are great... the harbour backdrop is awesome.
Another thing was that before Sibrund's murder Altair's VA's delivery switched from angry and sulky to quiet. "He is afraid, and it will help me," instead of his usual "I know what to do." I was thinking that it makes Altair harder, scarier, but after the target was hit, Altair started pouring out his soul yet again to Malik, and Malik instead of trying to kill him (which was what I was expecting to happen because Altair related the secret information to him earlier without authorization from the Old Boss Man about Templar's Real Plot) went on to venture a guess that Altair is not suited for the dark deeds. Well, that's not how I like it! I wanted the departure between the player's and Altair's morality there, not Altair wagging his finger and telling kids not to kill people.
In the modern storyline, the excitable Miss Lucy told Desmond, Omigod, O boy, I knew for a week, we gotta stop the global force of pacification! Their methods are not to my standards!
The Old Boss Man sent Altair back to the good old J-city to finally target De Sable. The prep missions were uber hard for me, I could not do any that required a few stealth hits, so I made Altair pickpocket, beat informant and chase over the roofs. I relieved some frustration at repeatedly failing at assassinating the annoying blocking innocent citizens, as many as the game would let me before desync.
Robert De Sable, we are coming for you, Altair and I, even though we are not really happy with one another atm.
I am also curious if Altair survives the game, or it ends up with a grand leap of faith or something, something. Desmond being his descendant indicates that he lived long enough to have children, but there are concubines and he has plenty of downtime at least between my gaming sessions, and if he is anything, he's Mr. Stamina, heh.

Oh, Altair, finally some major shifts in the story.
Apologized to Malik -apparently Malik was with him in the temple, I did not realize that. Good.
Suspects the Old Boss Man of shenanigans in Templar's favour, I take it - good.
Also, met a dame in armor with a sword, knew it was a dame, not Rober right away, not sure why. But, guessing it's the mother of his future children there.
Fighting through Arzuf now, I guess I will get to see if Malik betrays him or stands with him later on. Kill, kill, kill for now!

Okay, the mystery girl did not show up again, so just a potential mother of Altair's children, I guess. Had an audience with King R, who gave a command to conduct fair trial by setting a bunch of heavily armored knights on one be-robed Altair. Took some trying, but sure, we killed them all, and Rober did reveal the Old Boss Man to be the last guy standing. Went back, Malik was loyal to Altair, apparently, and I just had to fight the exasperating batle with Al Mualim that is won purely on luck, by knifing one real guy out of 9 identically looking one. Walkthrough I consulted in despair said they are not tough, but I beg to differ. Anyway, I lucked out on like fifth or so try to hit the correct one, and yay! Done! Well, yeah, Desmond saw some weird signs on the wall, but then it was done! Good game!
