If I was to play through the entire series of Assassin's Creed, which ones are recommended to skip, when it comes to overarching storylines (the Desmond and Abstergo stuff and all)? I'm aware that AC3 and Unity have less fans than Brotherhood or AC4 for instance. But are they necessarily bad?
And what about those spinoff games and/or the ones which are ported from handhelds to PC?
I've only played AC1+2 and Brotherhood, and I liked playing them, and thought both AC2 and Brotherhood were much more fun than the repetitive first game.
And last but not least, since I don't really like pirate stuff (except Monkey Island), and not that interested in sea battles, would Black Flag still be fun?

I don't think AC3 is bad, the lead is just not as engaging as Ezio. Plotwise it's important for modern day. You could play the critical path and not bother with the optional sea missions. Unity is flawed but not as flawed as it was at launch. It has little to add to the story arc and can be easily skipped in my view. I liked Liberation but mostly because I get to dress up (just me perhaps)...

I think though you should finish Revelations and 3 though for plot purposes.

I'm not big on skipping because I'm always afraid I'll miss out on something. But if I had to pick ones to skip it would be 3 and Unity. They aren't bad, but the mechanics were kind of annoying to me. I played through Rogue and Freedom's Cry and both were good, with the latter being pretty short. I'm trying to replay through Unity now and I forgot how enormous the map is with soooooo many side things to do. I may have to cut out on doing them all this time.

Someone very kindly gave me the key for AC, so I started the game tonight My impression so far: Controls on the PC are a bit too intricate, as some simple actions require pressing three buttons at once. The game does not recognize wheel scroll, which is annoying, I really like it for locking targets. So far I stayed with F, but it's going to take getting used to. I barely made it through the Templar sequential slaughter. Graphics was way better than I expected, though I can see clipping, fabrics billowing in an unnatural way and the Old Man's beard is silly looking VA on the other hand is not great for both main characters (?) But art-style is very cool. Not the face I'd have put on my guy, but well, the robes is what I mainly see, and they are very cool. So, I started the game, and the very first moment I got freaked out when I saw that pit with beams across. I was expecting to have to line myself up, and press SPACE to initiate precise jumps, but apparently Altair is a capable guy, and the less I mess with him the better he fairs. But climbing that first wall, well, took me a few tries before I remembered to let him do his thing till he stops. And not being hot on the trigger to jump him, as he did not quite leap of faith from the top of that wall a couple of times under my command, lol. The movement animation is nice. But yeah, it will be very hard for me to get used to hands off during jumping and climbing. SWTOR/BnS habits die hard. I've always liked the set up of the game, but Altair is a giant a-hole. Seriously, there are three rules. How hard can it be? I was glad that the Old Man knifed him, but I doubt that's I am rid of him. So, well, let's see how it goes.

I'm so glad you're getting to try it out. Remember that the game is 10 yrs old, so while the graphics are pretty as far as scenery and stuff, the movement (and beards, lol (imo) is a little wonky but gets better in later games. Altair is the giant'est of assholes, but this is why I love him. He has so much growth during the game, you'll see I hope you enjoy it!

It is certainly very atmospheric, they are doing a good job there. But one part where the movie was better (though "better" and that movie do not go together) was the animus. Darn, the machine in the movie was so much more fine than the bench with holes in the game. Controls still feel a bit off on the PC. I was doing the "Ye, O Demoted One" mission and had troubles judging the distance for pick pocketing & eavesdropping. Also, being stuck on a wall in the village then jumping off it in the middle of the crowd to the concerned comments of the villages "Why did he do it? He'll hurt himself!" was not my proudest moment. But I really liked the mission itself, it reminded me a little of Thane's mission in ME2. So, yeah, 9 people to kill. Pretty straightforward. Altair is still a giant bum, and the Old Man likes the sound of his voice. About the only part of RP I managed to squeeze in so far is making Altair pace during the cutscene as he is being lectured & pushing a lot of people out of the way and hitting a guy because he was frustrated with his situation. That's weird for it to be the only part I have under control, sort of backwards how it is in the games I used to, when RP is all in talking and here it is backwards, RP is all in actions.

Honestly I never really got into any of them till I got to Syndicate. Until then, the PC controls felt off, there was way too much repetitive content, the missions didn't grab me. Syndicate still has some of those issues but the setting, gadgets and mission design kept me engaged. Also Evie and Jacob were great. I am tempted to get Black Flag since that's considered more unconventional in the series and reviewed well.

Ah, hah. I thought I have nine people to kill... not so fast!
Because, maybe I do, as a long-term goal, but first I had to arrive to Damascus. Which meant doing a DA2-style riding a very similar strip of a road with palms multiple times, avoiding the same guards by riding or walking past them at a crawling speed, and climbing the same towers for eagle view. The last might have been not necessary, but seeing Altair climb was the most rewarding part of this stretch of the game.
I also found out that the Leap o' Faith does not always work. Either by a bug or by design, Altair does this awesome animation of an Olympic diver, and then hits the hay, and dies like it were a rock. It took him many tries of leaping-dying, then climbing down ignominiously, bum first, to get off one of those towers before the game decided he did not die in an attempt.
Speaking of repeating stuff, the game has the most frustrating saving and game quitting habits that I have encountered. Even though I try to quit right after the "save" icon displayed, sometimes I had to repeat a section when reloading the game anyway. And if there is a simple way to EXIT the game, I have not find it. Mine takes about six or so steps of going through various screens.
Anyway, despite all those obstacles, and slaughtering whole-sale far too many people Altair was supposed to cleverly avoid, he rode into Damascus. The panoramic view of Damascus was worth it!
Then we were lost for a while, with the only clear thing to do was killing the soldiers harassing the commoners. Well, not an Altair's kind of thing, but maybe, he had withdrawals like the Sith Warrior during his shuttle ride to Dromund Kaas, heh. Boy, this game needs Vette... Anyway, after making a few circles with the sages, and killing the guards at the gates anyways, I finally got clued in to climb a minaret, and that's when the quest icons popped up.
So, fingers crossed the icons are still there when I reload and Altair can finally go to his meeting with the Damascus' Assassin in Charge. The game also displays an alarming icon with a roof chase after an informant, but I will worry about it after the visit to the official Sin rep. I do want to see the roof chase though! So far the animations are awesome, so seeing Altair leap around would be neat. Just... hopefully it is not too hard to guess at what to do.

I really loved the roof chase! Even if altair did not catch the guy on the first two attempts. The third time we had 30 sec to spare, so, good for us!
But pickpocketing is beyond me, so I got him to climb a huge building to get more missions. Then he died again afte the Leap o' Faith, and there was no way he could climb down. So I went snooping on the net, turns out it a known bug, and simply enabling vertical sync fixes it. Yay! So, he leaped, and he lived! And got an eavesdropping mission for him instead of pickpocketing & that was way easier.
Omg, the dialogue in the mission's main office is hilarious if Altair died and got returned to the headquarters.
Anyway, I think I might actually get to assassinate someone finally!

AC games have no save features it auto saves, but it does get better as the games go on, as does the exiting them. I like reading your blow by blow of the Adventures of Altair. It's entertaining The walking past guards thing was SO ANNOYING. But is MUCH better in the next game.

Yes, yes! Altair got his first hit in! Hurray!
The assassination had a cool cutscene and the hint of the bigger conflict in the background. Alright! Frankly why on Earth they did not just do the whole story from the game in the movie? It's cohesive and way better than the BS they put into the script.
Back in the office Ms. Lucy explained groggy Desmond (well, he sounds groggy) that English as the official language of the Holy Land 'cause space magic... erm.. animus. Cool beans, but sheesh, I wish our guy in the present was more intersting. And controls in the office are even worse than on the field trips.
And Altair got a short sword, not sure what it's good for? It's not the hidden blade, is it? But anyway, he got the sword, and I would like to get to Akra, because I want to see a crusader held town. But, with my awesome map navigation skill I might end up in Jerusalem or Vienna or something...

I played AC on PC with a controller (originally bought for Dark Souls) and found it easier than the PC mouse and keyboard controls, since the button setup matches the action icon setup on the screen and it generally feels less fiddly. The sword is meant for open combat, where it's easier to use than the hidden blades. Altair grew pretty slowly on me, but the sequels have a few flashbacks where you get to play him and he's way more relatable there. Enjoy the series!

Yep, yep, my very first AC, and actually that's probably as far as I have gotten in a game with a non customized character! If I finish it, it will totally be my very first time ever with someone else's' baby. I am hoping to work through some of the games in a couple of years. I don't think I can play these games back to back, but I will just keep bringing them in between the games I am more used to playing, with a party and dialogue choices. Well, that's the plan anyway, but who knows, I might get obsessed with it or something So far, save for the upcoming title that actually got me going on the series, the historic backgrounds that I definetly want to play through are Renaissance games with Enzo, and the Ming China one from the Chronicles. I am on the fence for the French one. I'll see how attached I get to the franchise. I am not sure how Prince of Persia relates to these games, if at all, but I'll read up on that, and if it is a similar game in a historic Middle Eastern setting, I'd pick it up as well. The set up for this franchise is great, and if they would splurge on the customized protagonist, I'd be gamegasming.

The Ezio series is probably still my favorite one, because I found him eminently likeable, and they also have the Altair flashbacks.
There's often a surprising amount of historical detail in the AC series. For example, I first found the names of the armor sets in AC2 somewhat odd, then took the time to google them. Turned out they were all named after famous renaissance armorsmith families.
If you don't mind a port from the Playstation Vita and fewer cutscenes, try AC: Liberation. While still not customizable, you get a female protagonist, Aveline de Grandpré, and she can wear 3 different outfits that essentially change the way she plays (assassin, slave, lady).

Well, I officially suck. We made it to Acre, but there is no way I can save this citizen. I tried at least eight times, and Altair just gets killed. I tried killing the first guy with a hidden blade, but that only loses him time to change the sword, and then it's the same thing, he keeps being surrounded by more and more guards, and I can't keep his back to the wall, he just moves sort of randomly and tries to turn away, I can't parry in time from all sides, and he gets spotted and flanked. So, yeah, I suck

Okay, got through it. Apparently, you need to keep the block down all the time, instead of trying to actually parry the blows and not move around. THEN Altair springs intoo action. Yes, yes, I know there is a tutorial, but they really don't tell you when you executed the move they want to, and their persistence in referring to LMB/RMB as Button 0 and Button 1 or vice versa is confusing my poor old head. Apparently I can understand five year old posts for Xbox on the net better than their practical Tutorial, duh. So, moved into Acre with the friendly sages, saved a few more citizens en route to practice standing around, holding block and letting Altair do all the work, climbed the first viewpoint & got into the Bureau to get the assignment. Acre looks grey and gritty, I like it! But climbing/jumping feels a little harder than in Damascus. I think I would climb more viewpoints for practice this time before doing the investigations. Certainly looking forward to giving a shot to the roof chase. The Bureau in Acre looks exactly like the one in Damascus, I am guessing to provide traumatized assassins with a comforting familiar environment after a stressful day on the job. Fountains, pillows, the same guy with the same beard, that sort of thing. My mark is a Knight Hospitalier, rather than some lowly merchant. Yay us, Altair, we are raising up in the world! I think I am entering a honeymoon stage with the game, I really like it atm, despite not really digging Desmond/Altair, but a lot of it gives me thrills. Not combat though. Hubby said, why won't you buy controller? And I am almost feeling maybe I should.
