If you happen to be interested in tracking your progress and/or looking at the insane numbers required to max everything (including n7s), I made a tracker that could prove useful.

It's on Google Docs and if you want to use it, just make a copy to do so.

It does NOT error check for ranks above whatever the maximum in slot is, so don't don't be 20 in weapons or 30 in characters etc..

1.0: Original Public Release
1.1: Added remaining items left and estimated cost to acquire each.
1.2: Added estimated missions of each difficulty to complete collection
1.3: Added Ultra Rare Estimates assuming 400k per ultra rare, will change as more data opens up
1.4: Updated sheet to reflect 10 expert pack pity timer maximum theoretical cost.
1.5: Added X5 Ghost Rare Assault Rifle and Turian Agent Rare Character
1.6: Since rare packs no longer have a pity timer, updated the theoretical maximum assuming WORST luck
1.7: Added "S" variants of common weapons
2.0: Changed the design a bit to make the document look slightly more clean. Now the items are still alphabetical but are sorted by rarity. Also instead of being RED or GREEN the colors show progress a little bit better. 0 = Grey, 1-4=Red, 5-7=Orange 8-9=Yellow 10=Green Credit to r3v3l4t0r for the suggestion
2.1: Angara Exemplar (UR Character) and Reegar Carbine (Rare shotgun) added
2.2: Updated for patch 1.09. Platinum difficulty calculations, all variant weapons, batarian scrapper, and kishock harpoon gun have all been added. Coding was basically revamped to account for XX rank characters and only X rank weapons.
2.3: Added Batarian Vanguard, Shorty Shotgun+Variants
2.4: Fixed missing fields for Zalkin/Soned/Ushior (still calculated correctly, but weren't filled out originally), removed concussive variants of M-37 Falcon, Scorpion, Reegar Carbine and Venom (they don't exist), removed "Pistol Recon Scope" (doesn't exist.)
2.5: Added Human Juggernaut and Silhesh+Variants

I am going to see if I can make this more user friendly and less obtrusive to fill out, I will kick around some ideas and once I have one I like I will redesign it.
At the moment I am thinking of making a sheet that just has all the calculations, and making the other sheet data entry only. This would allow me to stack both vertically and horizontally for item ranks as opposed to ONLY vertically.

I personally use the tracker as well so anytime something new comes out it should be added within 48 hours tops (probably day of release)

So the best approach is to save up credits and open the packs in batches of 10? Or it doesn't matter if you open them in a row as long as you don't open anything else in between?
Also, does it make expert packs better than premium packs? Or is there a similar mechanism for premium packs? If there is, I'd imagine it to be set to 5.

I've just been buying batches of 10, and stopping whenever I do get a UR, regardless of which pack drops it. I dunno if it carries over if you quit or buy a different pack.
