So my overall impression of season 1 was good. I knew going in that with only 8 episodes they were going to be doing some serious shaving of content and a bit of reimagining (though the latter far more than I expected). As someone who has read and listened to the book series probably no less than 30 times I did have to keep my expectations in check and constantly remind myself "tv-series" and tried to focus on how well they captured the characters. I thought Moiraine and Nynaeve were great...Lan, Rand, Loial, and Egwene were good/fine, and really kind of hated what they did to Mat and Perrin...especially Perrin who deviates the furthest from the book. I think it was the reinvented backstories to Mat and Perrin that sent the writers off the rails...and I didn't think it was at all necessary for the adaptation either. I also really liked Siuan Sanche and Logain Ablar.
In terms of overall story content there were some of the things that you never get to view firsthand in the books they fleshed out in the series that made it enjoyable. Logain's arc was quite good and a certain Maiden of the Spear giving birth on Dragonmount was quite intense. I liked the "dark one" interactions with two main characters at the end - talk about hitting where it hurts.
So despite some aspects I'm less than thrilled by I think they laid good groundwork for season 2. With it's apparent success I really wish they'd either make each episode longer or increase each season by a couple episodes...compare with Netflix's Witcher that has the same number of episodes which is telling a story from source material about a quarter the word count.
Anyway, if you haven't watched and are a fan of the books just try and stay open-minded and look at it as a reimagining and you'll probably enjoy it. I did watch each episode twice and found the second go more enjoyable.
Cheers and Happy New Year.

I just watched the trailer and came here hoping to see your opinion I'm going to watch the season because I pay for Prime anyway, but it's got that cheesy fantasy look to it that I can never pinpoint the source of. Still, I'm not completely horrified yet It certainly does. But to be entirely honest, the books quite often have a little bit of a cheesy feel as well, so it kinda fits.
There are only two things I really disliked in the trailer: 1. The fact that the Aes Sedai in the show seem to be entirely color coded instead of just wearing color fringed shawls. It seems a bit much and when there are multiple Ajas together it looks like they are about to play a real live version of Trivia Pursuit or something.
2. The white Tower looks very unimpressive. At first I thought this might not be Tar Valon at all but maybe Caemlyn and the royal palace there. It can barely be called a tower at all IMO.
Apart from that, I thought it looked pretty decent.
I actually like the color coding of the Aes Sedai...and it's understandable why they're doing it given many millions more who watch will have no knowledge of the books. There's one shot in the tower with all the sitters segregated by color that I really like...and is quite telling. Anyway I loved the trailer (especially the design of the halfman) and bottom line for me is they tell a good story. I'm in no way expecting it to follow the books verbatim...I already know the first season is going to incorporate elements of New Spring and parts of The Great Hunt. That's a lot of material for 8 episodes...so needless to say a lot of cutting and rewriting is going to happen. I just hope the Trollocs end up looking terrifying and not goofy...that's going to require a lot of good design and CGI.

Also no, history is full of examples where one side doesn’t have to resort to that to fight back. Not that I necessarily disagree but examples please. Do not just claim it so.

Re-reading (listening to audiobook actually) Dune series. On Heretics of Dune now. I'd forgotten how deep this series was philosophically. Frank Herbert is to Sci-Fi what JRR Tolkien was to Fantasy...was way ahead of his time. Was he though? What I mean to say is: Doesn't that imply that SciFi became more philosophical with time? "Cause I am not sure that's the case. I didn't mean the philosophical aspect so much as the world he created and the genre he drove forward. I doubt there's a sci fi author that came after worth their salt that wasn't influenced by the Dune series. He's discussing things that no one was talking about back then...he was kind of prophetic.

* Imperial Radch trilogy (Ancillary Justice, Ancillary Sword, Ancillary Mercy) by Ann Leckie Just finished up the audiobooks on this one. Extremely imaginative and very satisfying. A bit difficult in the beginning because of complicated names and this weird gender ID swap thing happening. The reader did a very good job and really fit the characters in the world well. I would recommend and intend to listen to it again.

I found everything about the same in terms of difficulty though the fight with Cerberus in the large area in ME3 to rescue Jack and her students seemed more brutal than I remember (which I always found to be the hardest level in ME3 to fight through). I also consider grisson academy a hard early game mission. Actually, just the open space with the atlas. But they also gave us the mattock early in the legendary edition. In this mission, I like to bring liara and garrus. Liara will help me protect my cover, because singularity will handle the shield-wearing foes before they closed in. Garrus is a monster with the sniper, and has overload, which is key against centurions and engineers... Yeah, that's what I normally do as well but got cute this time and took EDI instead of Liara. The only thing that saved me this time around was my combat drone distracting shield-bearers. Died about a dozen times before I was able to take down enough baddies to push through. Still it's fun and I actually wish more of ME3 had that difficulty...perhaps I'm a masochist.

Yeah everything felt moe ror less the same difficulty wise only bi gchange was ME1 which feels slightly easier with the removal of the restrictions on weapons. The mako doesn't seem as bullet spongey now though but it does recharge faster so that seems to counter it. ME2 and ME3 feel more or less the same to me just with nicer graphics. I've always died a few times while trying to recruit Garrus in ME2 and I'm still finding that quest just as tough as ever in the LE so like I said no real significant change for me. Ugh, I hate recruiting Garrus...closing the stupid shutters (just one really) is where I die over and over.

As for Ashley I personally thought that out of her and Kaiden she would have the most character growth throughout the series Especially in the chest region.

I think if the devs really wanted to gimp Destroy they should have had it permanently disable the relay system (and possibly destroy all systems with relays in them ala Arrival), but that would not have gone over well. (Understatement). As I recall, pre-EC it was not well received...as it was presented as such. Though in retrospect it would have made a great setting for MET-next. Leviathan is still out there...and must pay for unleashing a genocidal AI on the galaxy responsible for murdering millions of civilizations.

Just finished ME2. I did something I've never done before (thru dozens of playthroughs)...scanned every planet and ended up doing a number of side mission I had never encountered previously...it was kind of cool. I was a little disappointed there wasn't a completionist achievement for all that effort. I didn't notice any changes or overhaul to the P/R system...maybe it was just to subtle. Ready for ME3 now.

To make him of all people a cheater shows how tone deaf Bioware is, they're more progressive than most game companies but the way they treated Jacob is a black eye in their treatment of black characters. I do agree it was tone deaf, but in my theory in some sick way they rationalized it as a part of his arc. Let me explain: Jacob didn't have a father, right? His whole loyalty quest is regarding his missing father. So they tried to turn it around by making Jacob a father himself as part of his arc. Problem is, Shepard didn't consent to having a child, nor would she really have time to raise a child in the middle of a galactic genocide when she's the most important person in the galaxy. So, they gave the child to another character, and by doing that they made him a cheater. So in an effort of getting away from one stereotype they propitiated another. But that's just my theory. Good line of thinking...although why anyone would want to try have a child in the midst of galactic genocide is crazy...not sure anyone should subject a child to such horrors. Is it me or does that seem selfish?

In its core form IDT was better than what we got...some of the details that were fixated on were firmly in tinfoil hat territory though. I could buy Shepard was in the early stages of indoctrination...he was after all overcome by Object Rho and spend a fair amount of time running around Collector ships. Honestly they should have just removed the stupid dream sequences...which was the main spawning ground for IDT.

For real, what kind of asshole writes the token black character as, if you romance him, a disloyal cheater who impregnates another woman while you're in holding while making their loyalty mission about finding their absent father? Like, who the fuck okay'd that??? And to make it worse? He's boring!!! He's literally just there! Honestly, i hope Lukas Kristjansen doesn't write anymore black characters, they're not his story to tell and it shows with both Liam and Jacob he doesn't know what to do with black characters if it saved him. I pretty much feel the same...I don't know about the writer as I don't follow who writes what but Jacob is the epitome of the black stereotype...and boring to boot. More and more I'm thinking Shinobu's original idea of randomizing backgrounds and personalities is not a bad way to go. A little bit of stereotyping is okay as we ourselves tend to perpetuate those either based on background or expectations of those we associate with, but socioeconomic backgrounds have been changing for a great many...irrespective of skin color.

To me, we are like that secret community that are here and everyone outside is unaware of the existence. I don't see talks about the forums anywhere outside here, plus most of the folks here are from the original one. Some have moved on and such, but back then, even new copies of Bioware's games and their social media talked about the old BSN. It's possible that the concept of the 'forum' is less of a thing than it once was. We are comfortably the second 'Mass Effect forum' on google behind the 'official' EA site (though we are significantly more active). And comfortably the #1 Dragon Age forum. But are 'forums' a little more traditional? That said, only 3% of site visitors have signed up for posting 'membership' so the site has a huge readership who visit the site and enjoy it's shenanigans without commenting and that's fine. Come on 97 percenters...sign up and engage in some shenanigans with us! We need some fresh blood around here. I've enjoyed discussing these games with many of you over the past decade + but it's become too much of the same by the same...if you know what I mean. So come on you young whippersnappers and bring us fresh perspectives.

My combat ranking would be MEA, ME3, ME2, ME1 Even though MEA's combat wasn't bad, I rate it last because it doesn't have the power wheel and can't control squadmates. Because of that, I look at it as a step backwards. Hopefully in the next ME game those two things return. Eh, it's all personal preference. I always just let my squadmates do whatever the hell they want so it doesn't bother me...but I do think it's in Bioware's best interest to try to accommodate as much of the player base as they can.

I'm not surprised with Tali being number 1 for ME 1. Her abilities are really useful against the Geth, plus she can unlock and decrypt all those random containers. On higher difficulties, she's necessary at early levels. I doubt that'd be the case for ME 2 or 3, though. Her abilities aren't as good against organics, and she comes into the story halfway through. In both those games, Garrus will probably take the top spot, especially if his ME 3 insanity build is still viable. Actually Kaidan is more useful than Tali, since he can decrypt and has electronics. He's also Biotic and a Medic. Garrus is next to useless since he isn't and can't tank like Kiadan can. I'm sorry but Garrus and Tali being the most popular LI, does NOT MEAN that they are most useful in Combat. Well we all have our personal biases on which characters are best but the reality is which companions are most useful is wholly dependent on a given playstyle.

My combat ranking would be MEA, ME3, ME2, ME1
My story ranking would be ME2 (if viewed as a stand alone), ME1, ME3 (despite the horrible ending), and MEA
My RP ranking would be ME1, ME2, ME3, and MEA
My overall would be ME2, ME3, ME1, and MEA

I unlocked in the following order: Ash, Tali, Garrus, Liara, Wrex, and poor, poor Kaiden who is now radioactive dust. I have found near the end that Wrex and Tali maxed out in shotgun and equipped with high end shotguns and mods are pretty much wrecking machines (pun intended).
