Kind of like the "Battle Royale" thread, but without the clickbait title , from the perspective of traditional story-driven SP games versus Anthem. E3 showcased or teased some pretty amazing SP games, particularly PlayStation exclusives. EA and Bethesda's shifts to add online-first gaming to their franchises seemed to suggest that that was the way all games were going, but the uptick in SP games comes as a pleasant surprise. Which ones caught your attention and your hype? How do you think Anthem will fair against these games? Will the traditional Bioware audience be split by this? For me, the ones that I'm most interested in are: - Ghost of Tsushima -- looks like a Witcher-style game, but as a samurai set in historical Japan
- The Last of Us 2 -- holy shit, they made huge improvements in combat and graphics, looks stunning!
- Death Stranding -- WTF? I have no idea what that game is about, but it looks cool af.
And since it will come up, I didn't list Cyperpunk 2077 because I'm still in wait-and-see mode. The teaser looks pretty good, no complaints there, but need more info on gameplay and story.
Likewise, TESVI is also a wait-and-see for me, since all we saw was a drone shot of some landscape. The scope of the landscape is breathtaking, but more details please.
Ghost of Tsusima looks promising...hadn't heard of that so thanks. Love Japanese history/mythology so that's a big bonus for me. TLOU2 looks incredible...been (im)patiently waiting for that since I played the first game. Death Stranding probably not my thing. Hideo is weird for the sake of being weird and as a result his storytelling is pretty incoherent. Though if you liked MGSV's story you may be into it. I need to see gameplay before I know on that one. Just be prepared for hour long cutscenes. Definitely down with CP2077 but I don't see that coming for another 2-2.5 years given the lack of gameplay. Edit: Shadow of the Tomb Raider looks tasty too.

Two things you can bank money on with Fallout...it'll be a buggy mess and the story will make MEA seem like Hemingway. One of the few novelties to Bethesda games has been openness to modding. Wonder how much they'll allow given the online MP aspect to the game? I'm anticipating major raging from the fanbase (assuming it hasn't already begun). I'm sure it'll still make gangbusters money, FO4 and Skyrim for all their "streamlining" and "dumbing down" of Bethesda systems still made money hand over fist, Skyrim so much that its being re-released nearly endlessly Oh, I have little doubt it will, I just will never really understand the appeal. Shallow story, shallow combat mechanics has no appeal for me.

Also, I'm a bit surprised by your resistance. I seem to recall you were pretty active on the MEAMP section in the early days. My impression is that Anthem will be everything MEAMP wasn't. With some story and lore (hopefully done well) to provide context. That at the very least seems promising. I also think this could end up being everything SWTOR wasn't. Well I was mostly there because of ME3 MP, cause when they made MEA everyone from ME3 started playing that one, so I kinda forced myself to give it a chance, all my friends from ME3 were there playing it and having fun apparently but I couldn’t get into it. I tried and tried and for a little while it was “okay”, my friends tried talking me into playing more and with them it seemed more fun but still, the game was awful and I eventually quit. I just don’t think this will be any better and I prefer my games to be single player first and foremost and then if there’s a multiplayer added on the side, then I can try it maybe but I don’t care for games which are only multiplayer, no those are not for me I’m afraid. Fair enough. I used to feel exactly the same. I think as I've gotten older and the job more and more stressful, I've transitioned more to the other side. Let me crack open a beer, log on, and blow stuff up. Great stress reliever. Not that I'd say no to an old school Bioware experience. I just didn't find the two most recent editions to represent that. Not that I think they were bad games...they just were unable to deliver the same level of satisfaction as past ones.

Your voice does matter, but this game is going to be what it is. You not liking it does not make it bad, it's just not to your taste. I am very much on the hype train now that the details are emerging. I was talking in general when it comes to Bioware. I’m not in the illusion that they’ll change their crappy new style and suddenly change Anthem into another game but if we, the ones who aren’t pleased with their new style don’t speak up and constantly tell them that we don’t like this change, then they will only continue like this with their future games, however if a lot of people voice their displease or thoughts within why they won’t buy their games, then there will at least be hope for us, that they’ll some day change back to their more older form, or something like it. Edit: And you liking it does not make it good either. Also, I'm a bit surprised by your resistance. I seem to recall you were pretty active on the MEAMP section in the early days. Of course, you not liking the "new" direction doesn't make it bad either. Sofa already said that.... What, redundancy on a Bioware forum...unheard of!

Game looks awesome but unfortunately, my train hype slowly slows down (I literally dont know why), however, during the last presentation I noticed a certain gameplay/storytelling relationship, between playing in FPP and TPP. I'm not an active member on this forum, I only read posts from shadows ( :3 ) but I was wondering if it would be nice to share my thoughts in the form of video material with you. I do not make money on it and I do it only as a hobby. I'm just curious what you think about it. It didn't really register in my mind but I think you touched on it well. Normally story is more a 3rd person experience while 1st is for combat (at least based on the games I've played). This does seem calculated. Very nice.

I'm trying to figure out at what point romances became a big thing in Bioware games. Sure it was a part of BG2 but nobody paid that much attention to it, it was just an unexpected piece of content in a content rich game. I'm pretty sure people weren't too fussed about it in KOTOR, so ... Origins? ME? Started (as 'big thing' imo) KOTOR/JE, important by ME/DAO, fandoms around it by ME2/DA2, expanded ME3/DAI. And no matter how much additional said content they add people still whine incessantly. Maybe Bioware should just create a romance sim game that includes a brief cutscene showing your character going out for a mission immediately followed by one of them returning so they can get back to sexy time. Ugh! Forget I said anything.

LOL they keep making their games against their fans wishes, I mean, they ask for feedback and they get it but yet they don’t use it and make their games the EXACT opposite of what their fans want and then when their fans complains, they can’t seem to understand? They call us toxic? LOL again. They should start to actually LISTEN to us instead, maybe just maybe making a game based on the feedback received for once ( or since the “old days”) would turn things around for both them and us their loyal fans through many years who BUY their games which in the end results to them making money... No offense but I think MEA failed because they listened entirely too much to their fans...who I think are the issue, because what you want is not necessarily what I want, which is not what another wants. And in the attempt to placate everyone they end up satisfying no one (or very few anyways). If you asked ten people how Bio should prioritize their development resources you may very well get ten different answers. It must be a frustrating place to be. Glad I don't have their job.

I'm not familiar with that, but I've long been an advocate of doing it as a way to minimize the resource drain. I'm kind of glad they made the decision to not include them...might serve as a wake up call to that (obsessive) segment of the fanbase. I think they're great for added replay value but I'd guess I do them maybe a third of the time...and I certainly don't want them if it means diminishing the overall story and the depth of the world. Reminds me of an exchange with a friend just after the E3 announcement where the question among my friends was wondering if this might have been impacted by the facial animation fiasco around Mass Effect: Andromeda. There would be a lot of custom animation work for a romance to prevent clipping and other problems while being mostly a one time only event. I just looked it up and there are ten different characters that can be romances in Mass Effect: Andromeda and some of those can be romanced by both male and female versions of Ryder. While there were comments about the romance segments being the best animations in the game. Yeah, if it were me in charge I'd mandate 90% of the game be done and in working order before romance stuff got worked on. Then probably limit it to 2 of each gender and make them playersexual (it's a RPG for crying out loud, so go ahead and RP that).

Colossus and/or ranger. Stealthy rogue types the interceptor don't appeal to me much, and I hate space magic being in an otherwise technology based UP. I HOPE they have a good explanation for that. Really though, I hope we eventually see a javelin designed around constructs and support (creating shields/force fields, deploying drones and constructing turrets). That would for sure be my perfect javelin. Not sure about the drones/turrets but my impression is that each class of javelin will have enough flexibility with augments and loadouts that picking one won't restrict you entirely to a predefined style, i.e. the Colossus doesn't have to be just a tank. I like the idea of a drone...especially if I can get a recon version to scout out enemy encampments...fortifications, turret positions, and whatnot.

Expect to see this thread used as evidence that Anthem is a Fortnite clone. Fallout 76 is the one I think that’s shockingly similar to Anthem in terms of mixing story with coop. The 4 month lead time might work out for both companies benefit, **unless** Bethesda’s beta runs over, which seems likely. Two things you can bank money on with Fallout...it'll be a buggy mess and the story will make MEA seem like Hemingway. One of the few novelties to Bethesda games has been openness to modding. This. When the hell did a romance in these games become integral to Bioware's identity I got to ask? It's been around since baldurs gate 2 but now it's always expected? Because it's in all of their games I liked it better when it's a back of the box feature. At least then, the romances can be justified as to what they were, an extra. I agree and from some comments I read over the years it sounds like it was only done to give the fans what they want, so in some regards we are not any better then EA because the fans are driving what BioWare was putting into their games because people keep saying how important the money they give them is. My opinion on romances has been pretty much the same for years, do it for the associated achievement and then never again. I was a steady follower of David Gaider's blog and when he talked about romances I think he was done with them after the "Playersexual" player comments after Dragon Age 2, for he stated that he felt obligated to include them. I'm not familiar with that, but I've long been an advocate of doing it as a way to minimize the resource drain. I'm kind of glad they made the decision to not include them...might serve as a wake up call to that (obsessive) segment of the fanbase. Interceptor because it has that classic anime look...though it's probably gonna depend on which gives me the greatest flexibility to accommodate my preference to play fast and aggressive.

Definitely. I was a bit shocked to be honest. Of course the pessimist in me is wondering "what's the catch?" Gameplay/story DLC that segregates the intended playerbase (groups as opposed to easy solo setup)? That's what I was thinking. Which is a fine approach to take...I'd rather pay for actual content...and it beats the hell out of the RNG store.

Seems like Bio does not want you to play solo.... a strong hint.
Well, I think "want" isn't quite right. It's more like, they designed for an optimal experience to be co-op. Meaning, that if you play solo, it will be sub-optimal. So it's definitely a strong hint, but it's one that allows for that choice to be made with eyes open and full knowledge if you really want to. Just don't come complain to us if, when comparing your solo experience with others who did the same mission coop, yours comes up lacking. BUT -- I think it's fair to say that they also designed high dragon hunting in DAI to be a full party, but that didn't stop me from soloing every one of them, multiple times, on Nightmare. Was that sub-optimal? In some ways, yes. I had to spend an inordinate amount of time squeezing every unit of DPS I could get out of my build, and a lot of extra grinding time, to be able to do that. But the I'm fucking badass feeling of soloing a high dragon, not to mention speedkilling it solo, has compensating benefits to the ego. Which is why my reaction to the whole "solo is degenerate coop" mission thing is -- BRING IT ON! Challenge Accepted! I just hope I can set missions to private so I really can solo them. Lol, that happened whether I wanted too or not given how quickly my companions died. "Sera, quit shooting your arrows pointblank at the dragons face while it breathes its fire!" I agree with the whole soloing thing. Can't...shouldn't translates to I'm definitely going to. I'll bet it won't be long after release that they patch to allow people to solo raids...since I guarantee plenty of people will be asking for it. Gamers, particularly MPers love the extra challenge as well as bragging rights.

The negativity isn't any worse for these forums than any other I've visited. As someone else said it's the internet...the place where any unfiltered A-hole can say whatever they want while hiding behind a monitor. As an ol' timer from the days of KOTOR I've seen Bioware games go through a gambit of iterations. Anthem doesn't really seem any different. From my POV if they manage to tell a good story filled with interesting characters they really haven't deviated all that much. If what they've told us made me think that we'd end up with a good story, then I'd have much less of a problem. But I don't see how cordoning everything interactive off in Fort Tarsis is going to result in good story telling, I'm not impressed by the idea of the story serving mostly as an introduction to the world and so far the world itself just seems rather boring to me - everything just seems like it exists for the sake of gameplay. And of course the best parts of Bioware's story telling, sometimes the saving grace, has always been the companions, which they've done away with There will be companions just not ones you take on missions with you. If you really think about it, it will not be significantly different from being limited to interactions with ME/DA companions in camps or hubs. Now Bio does have to deliver on that promise of a story...and I will not automatically assume they will, but you shouldn't entirely dismiss their ability to deliver one either. I can totally envision how it could be pulled off effectively, it just remains to be seen if they can.

Well unless they change their minds they've already said the only micro transactions will be cosmetics for your Javelin...no lootboxes or pay to win purchases. Well that's good news then. Definitely. I was a bit shocked to be honest. Of course the pessimist in me is wondering "what's the catch?"

It looks good and all, but sadly I have a feeling it will go all micro transactions pay to win. I'll just stick with ME, which is what I wish Bioware would have done, they should have focused on a ME4 or ME:A2. Well unless they change their minds they've already said the only micro transactions will be cosmetics for your Javelin...no lootboxes or pay to win purchases.

I was thinking they should try for a real life one instead of pixel love. Indeed. One of the things that was annoying (for me at lest) in ME and DA were the romances. But lack of romance able characters in Anthem is not the reason why I don't like this game. I don't really mind them but I do think a certain segment of the fanbase has gotten ridiculous with their demands regarding romance content...and how everything needs to be gated to their specific preferences. That's the part I find annoying...to the point I no longer care if Bioware includes them.

People who are that upset about no romances in this game should just go play dating sims. I was thinking they should try for a real life one instead of pixel love.
