I loved Gillette's razors. But no more. I will buy new razors tomorrow. It's not so much a boycott as that I cannot imagine using something I now hold as tainted, unclean. I feel only disgust. I will not touch my face with their things ever again. Good riddance, it's not like Proctor & Gamble is like an ethical company anyway. Voting with my wallet is long overdue in this case.

I'm looking into throwing out my fusion now. What's a good replacement? I'll have to get back to you on that. It will take some month of testing. From what I gather, the traditional 'Safety Razor' style with double edged blade has increased its market share in later years, so it's seemingly a viable option. The beauty of Fusion and Mach3 was however that you just had to swipe your face and you were done. So I have at first purchased three of Wilkinson Sword's systems, Hydro 5, Hydro 3 and Quatro Titanium sensitive, since they seem the most similar to Gillette's styles. Edit: I've discovered Schick razors is exactly the same stuff. So they're available under that brand name as well. Apparently, Schick purchased Wilkinson Sword some years back. They are not as readily available in stores as Gillette, but we live in the age of online, so it's no problem. It will take time to test and figure out though. I would suspect the blades don't last quite as long as Gillette's, but they're cheaper. I'll probably get a traditional Safety Razor style as well, for testing. Maybe it's not so awkward as I imagine.

I'm looking into throwing out my fusion now. What's a good replacement? My initial impressions of the Schick/Wilkinson razors are positive. These, I think, are usable. The Hydro 3 and Hydro 5 is essentially the same system. The difference being the number of blades. The Hydro 3 is the somewhat nimbler razor for the same reason. I have not yet shaved with the Hydros, so this is judging by look only. They are somewhat Fusion-like. I have started to shave with the Quatro Sensitive. I believe this is the oldest system. It is definitely the most elaborate and complex. The first time I shaved with it, I experienced the feeling as very weird and for a brief moment I was prepared to think it was junk. The reason is that you have no feel of shaving. There are small cross wires holding out the skin from the blades. In some kind of panic I pressed somewhat hard. Still no feel of shaving. Afterwards, I realized the shave was ridiculously close. I had pressed too hard. Looking close at my skin, it seemed roughed up, and I realized I had peeled off the outermost layer of skin cells. Which explained what the gunk clogging the razor was. It should be impossible to cut yourself with this razor, hence the name "Sensitive". A neat detail is that there is a fifth blade on the tip of the backside, which makes it easy to shave difficult to reach places (like the nose hair). It is somewhat more difficult to rinse than the Gillettes, due to the cross wires and elaborate construction, but I always use real, hard shaving soap and brush, and that always rinse out simply under the faucet. I would not like to use this razor with foam or gel, but I never use that crap anyway, so no problem. I'm happy enough with the Quatro. This I can live with. The Hydros look even better though, but as I said I have not started to use them yet.

Borrowing an expression is not much of an argument. Let's see if I can explain: Why should I pay for foul propaganda, from and for the vile, totalitarian antagonists that I oppose in the culture war?First of all, there is no commercial. Not for razors and not for any other product. It's just a paid for, like commercials, media spot. It's an ideological propaganda statement, portraying a number of heavily falsified and factually unrepresentative situations, as well as promoting psychologically unsound and harmful behavior against boys. All from the edge of the ideologically possessed, 3'rd wave feminists' perspective. That such a large number of media people and others, like you, have difficulties in seeing how offensive this shit is, is only a measure of where the culture war has brought our society today. And how demonized men already are. And white men, it seems, judging by the supposedly 'positive' actors in this. Just imagine, if something similar was made, directed against women, or blacks, or gays. The creators have no idea of what they're doing. They just go with their own brainwash. I'm not generally in favor of boycotts, as can be seen from previous posts, on the old forum, from me, on various subjects regarding EA and Bioware. But that doesn't mean I will buy from companies that I'm disgusted by. I don't. And since I now have done enough shaves to declare Schick & Wilkinson Sword to be absolutely brilliant, I also have no reason to.

But that doesn't mean I will buy from companies that I'm disgusted by. I don't. And since I now have done enough shaves to declare Schick & Wilkinson Sword to be absolutely brilliant, I also have no reason to. First of all, there are decades of advertisements that target women and tell them how they should live, to be a "proper" woman in a "man's" world. Cooking products, cleaning products, beauty products, weight loss products, child care products...ect, so don't even try to act as if it has never happened. There have been advertisements in the past that addressed gang violence that DID target the black community... and gays..? HA! The general attitude up until recently has been to completely deny their existence and not give them any representation at all. So really, if your feelings are hurt over a razor company asking "Is this the best a man can get?" after a decade or two with the slogan "The best a man can get"...*shrug* oh well. " portraying a number of heavily falsified and factually unrepresentative situations" ... statistics don't lie...police reports don't lie...the only thing this advertisement is doing, is challenging men to think before they act, stand up for others who are being victimized and basically just use a little common sense and courtesy...there was a time when that was called being a gentleman...not being "demonized". What's being "demonized" is the notion that bullying, violence and condescending behavior is all a part of masculinity.
... and what the hell is an"unrepresentative situation?" it sounds like you just threw together big words in a sentence just to sound impressive.

That is one hell of a false analogy. Since you have so normalized this progressive bullcrap, let me "translate" Gillette's message for you: Dear women, stop making false rape charges. Stop using abortions as birth control. Stop lying to gain attention and sympathy. Please understand that criticism is not "harassment". Do something about the gender inequality in sewage maintenance. Show what girls can, go girl! etc, bla, bla. What a good and positive message, eh?

Sorry, but I lived through the 60's, 70's, 80's, 90's and 2K programming/ advertisements. I was raised on old fashioned messages, and you are the one who doesn't know what you're talking about. Your "translation" is lacking and you show no insight on the topic. If switching razor brands makes you feel justified, have at 'er, but don't assume people will buy into your bs.

You completely miss the meaning of what I said...so let me spell it out for you. Assholes come in every way, shape, form. Violence and bullying is asshole behavior. Being an asshole isn't gender specific. There is a predominant move to excuse male asshole behavior as being "masculine", when not all masculine men are assholes. Being an asshole, is being an asshole, the commercial is challenging decent masculine men to call out the asshole behavior of their peers.

Not saying I like the other side better, but if you guys keep on like this, I'll have no choice but to side with them. I don't want to lose fundamental freedoms to a mob of angry males claiming everything is sexist against them!

FTR, high school girls have always bullied one another. When Gillette makes an ad to say guys are bad for being bullies, why do they ignore the other side? Rather than point the finger at a particular sex, why not just say bullying is wrong, period? That sort of unwarranted violence (verbal or physical) has no place anywhere, though I do believe fighting back is an option. That is, fight back against the person rather than the group.

... and what the hell is an"unrepresentative situation?" it sounds like you just threw together big words in a sentence just to sound impressive. People are annoyed because the advertisement isn’t demonizing the idea that bullying, violence and condescending behavior are all a part of masculinity. Rather, it’s asserting that those things are part of masculinity to begin with. What people are rejecting in this advert is that assertion and the implication that the entire consumer base for this product has some terrible flaw to overcome. In short, the ad designers are bad at their job because they designed an add that treats their consumers with the very condescension they are supposedly cautioning them against. That’s a general problem though when you make an ad that attempts to generalize a demographic in such a stupid way.

What's being "demonized" is the notion that bullying, violence and condescending behavior is all a part of masculinity.
... and what the hell is an"unrepresentative situation?" it sounds like you just threw together big words in a sentence just to sound impressive.People are annoyed because the advertisement isn’t demonizing the idea that bullying, violence and condescending behavior are all a part of masculinity. The only "flaw" it's addressing is the common practice of ignoring these events and is challenging men to speak out against them. Instead of getting their shit in a knot and feeling victimized, maybe they should be listening to the message and do some self-reflection. It isn't saying all that is a part of masculinity, they are saying that there is a habit of excusing those actions by blaming them on being masculine traits.

And that narrative is being contested, the idea that these things only happen because men allow them to happen or encourage them to happen because masculinity. It’s incredibly condescending and debatably true. Even if true, it will only apply to a fraction of the vast net you’ve cast. Many or most of the people you see upset are precisely those who don’t consider that behavior to be a part of masculinity or excuses for it as a part of masculinity. They are upset that they are being lumped in with this supposed “common practice”. It essentially amounts to blaming people for actions taken by others. The underlying message may amount to “don’t be an ass and don’t excuse other people being asses”, but attaching that to vast generalizations about such a huge demographic that has nothing more in common than a Y chromosome doesn’t help get the message across. This is why #NotAllMen has become a meme, because people hate others defining them by the worst of their demographic. If this sounds similar to how racists treat minority groups, that’s because it is similar. People recognize when they’re being negatively generalized and they don’t like it. They don’t feel responsible for the actions or behavior of every member of their gender group and it’s unreasonable to expect anyone to.

Well then, maybe men who don't see all those negative traits as a part of being masculine should stand up and actively move to reestablish the meaning of what masculine means instead of wasting their time bitching about a stupid commercial.

For them, the meaning has already been reestablished. It is not their responsibility nor is it in their power to control the behavior of all other men. All most people have any realistic power over is their own behavior. Is it in your power to control the behavior of everyone in your demographic groupings?

You just got to the heart of the message the ad was trying to point out. It's up to each individual to self-reflect and figure out their own idea of what being a man means. It encourages them to control their own behavior instead of following the behaviors being dictated to them.

It encourages them to control their own behavior instead of following the behaviors being dictated to them. If that was the message, the task could have been accomplished without bringing the generalization of men into it (though it probably wouldn’t have worked as a razor commercial, not that it does anyway) Instead, the vast generalization leads with the assertion “Look, ALL YOU MEN let these things happen, look at all these terrible things MEN do and need to do better.” And that turns this from a statement of self control to a demographic villification because of the implication that the audience needs this messaging, that the all men watching this need to change. And those of who find the idea that we shouldn’t be jerks self evident find it incredibly condescending and insulting.
