The few reviews I have read cite technical issues as being a big problem. Other than that the story is supposedly good. Might look into this for myself at some point. No technical issues that I encountered save for maybe graphical clipping here and there. My own review is up if folks care...honestly it could have been better than it was. The mechanics regarding your moral choice vs evolving your vampire powers is fantastic. The rest of the game...kind of bland to be honest. Its worth a play and for folks here id say definitly give it a go if you like RPGs. Just don't expect to have the word lit on fire.

Its worth a play and for folks here id say definitly give it a go if you like RPGs. Just don't expect to have the word lit on fire. I read your review, but I was curious about something which I didn't really see mentioned in your review. In some games, like DeusEx:HR, the ability / augmentation system is very much tied to morality, a "pacifist run" is arguably less fun because you can't use the cool abilities you could use otherwise. DE:MD improved on that a little by adding fun augmentations tailored for non-lethal approaches. My issue is mainly that games that makes a "good" PT into a less fun PT, while interesting on some level from narrative standpoint, tend to sacrifice much of what makes the gameplay itself enjoyable. From your review I got the impression that this is one of those cases, am I right? Are "good" PT and a "fun" PT mutually exclusive? Also, can't you simply get your XP from enemies you find on the street rather than stalking NPCs? It's hard to say because I tried to do it middle of the road, but if id have to guess they are exclusive. XP gain outside of NPC's is fairly miniscule. You get a little XP for healing people who are sick with medicine, you get decent XP for side-quests and about 5-10 xp per enemy kill. Subsequently, NPC kills, if you get their health all the way up, range from 1,000-5,000 XP from what i've seen. Most powers you get after a certain point need about 3-6,000 XP to level up, so the game does encourage it. Mathematically at least. It is possible to be competitive with the games leveling system but I would suspect you would be fairly under-leveled by 5 or 6 levels if you went a full pacifist or "good" playthrough. Not to give away spoilers but even doing it halfway I was on par with the final boss in terms of levels. I would guess if I went full pacifist id have to grind out levels by scrapping enemies, doing every single side quest and healing the sick a few times before getting on par with the boss at the same rate. You can go after enemies with higher levels and theoretically kill them, but it would be difficult for sure, hence the hit and run tactics I sort of mentioned.

I’m pretty OK with shitty combat if the story’s interesting and the role playing experience is decent.

I'm liking it so far. Some rough edges but it's clearly not a AAA project. The way you unlock dialog options and potential quests via hints is definitely well done, as is the prospect of deciding who to feed on to level up.

Well, a few things worry me.
Is biting people always fatal to them? So you can't kind of cultivate a herd of victims that you haunt for blood on a regular basis? (Vampires must be able to remain undiscovered when there isn't a Spanish Flu around to explain all the bodies)
Biting is just the way to gain XP, not required sustenance for another day or to fuel vampiric powers?
And most importantly, is the game taking its own enjoyment as a hostage and releases it only for the occasional murder of civilians?

Game is downloading, but won't be able to start until tonight.
Of course that leads to a question: start this, or keep playing Deadfire?

Decided to go ahead and buy it, had some time to start it up and go through the early part of the game (just reached the hospital). So far I'm liking the atmosphere, and the combat isn't as terrible as some reviews on Steam will have you believe, it may not be amazing, but it seems perfectly acceptable to me. The style seems a bit like "Souls-lite". We'll see how it goes. If this means anything, it reminds me of Dragon Age II a lot in some ways due to how combat/world space was used. Take that as you will, but as you play the game you can sort of see what I mean.

If this means anything, it reminds me of Dragon Age II a lot in some ways due to how combat/world space was used. Huh. That can be taken in various ways, most of them not particularly complimentary. Good concept, poor execution you mean? In one sense yes. That kind of sums up some of my feelings on the game overall, although to be honest ill always argue Dragon Age II did well with the execution minus the glaring flaw of dev time being an issue. Moreso how they use the world space. Remember how you more or less jumped from the same map to map in Dragon Age II? Picture that but only it's an open-world map that slowly opens up as you unlock gates and story missions. Combat is open-world action stuff so button presses for combos and using powers, all of that is kind of similar too. I don't know, I had vibes of Dragon Age II at times when I played this. Only problem was there was little in the way of keeping me compelled to keep going unlike Dragon Age II. <iframe width="26.920000000000073" height="5.480000000000018" style="position: absolute; width: 26.920000000000073px; height: 5.480000000000018px; z-index: -9999; border-style: none;left: 15px; top: -5px;" id="MoatPxIOPT0_63881178" scrolling="no"></iframe> <iframe width="26.920000000000073" height="5.480000000000018" style="position: absolute; width: 26.92px; height: 5.48px; z-index: -9999; border-style: none; left: 1283px; top: -5px;" id="MoatPxIOPT0_83123423" scrolling="no"></iframe> <iframe width="26.920000000000073" height="5.480000000000018" style="position: absolute; width: 26.92px; height: 5.48px; z-index: -9999; border-style: none; left: 15px; top: 213px;" id="MoatPxIOPT0_40713890" scrolling="no"></iframe> <iframe width="26.920000000000073" height="5.480000000000018" style="position: absolute; width: 26.92px; height: 5.48px; z-index: -9999; border-style: none; left: 1283px; top: 213px;" id="MoatPxIOPT0_15199759" scrolling="no"></iframe>

I remember vaguely something about a stealth-kill mechanic in the game, meaning being able to teleport from behind and grab an enemy if he didn't notice you, but targeting an unaware enemy and pressing F doesn't seem to do anything. Am I missing something? Haven't played the game yet but in the revoew I read, they specifically emphasized that they were weirded out by the fact that there is no real stealth mechanic in the game. I am surprised as well, given the usual vampire tropes.

Well, I tried the game for a few hours this evening.
I fear this game is going to become unfun pretty quickly.
I already feel like I'm being penalized for not feeding on civilians. The vampire hunters are already getting ridiculously more powerful than me. I'm trying to pick up some drugs for the hospital and running into stuff that can kill me in just a couple of hits.

I wish they use VtM feeding methods. There's no way to control the intake. It's either all or nothing. I also keep wishing this game is like Dishonored I & II in terms of combat and skills.

It is the best mechanic that way...caring for these people...then taking their lives for the boost. Not as if some of them didn't deserve it...although as I said the characterization is fairly flat for the majority of the NPCs.

Yeah, but it appears (I don't know for sure) that most civilians have personal connections to others. So even if one person has it coming, that person's death will have a detrimental affect on another, who maybe doesn't deserve it. And that person may affect another, and so on.
I just wish there were more alternative ways to handle quests. Deus Ex this ain't.

You CAN feed on rats to regain health and get a tiny amount of xp. But in a weird twist, you get FAR more XP by stalking and killing civilians than you go defeating the guys with flamethrowers trying to kill you... It is the best mechanic that way...caring for these people...then taking their lives for the boost. Not as if some of them didn't deserve it...although as I said the characterization is fairly flat for the majority of the NPCs. Why would i care for people if i am going to kill them? for me this is the opposite of what it should be.
