Replies spanning millions of miles, tsk tsk tsk... Explaining motivations is easy ! I love mass effect because...
...I am writing my own experience.
Yes, but any number of RPG allows you to do that. And how would you define 'your own experience'? Is it the shooting parts? The characters? The futuristic settings? I think ME is exceptionally good at this. There are just so many outcomes possible. Playing a fresh ME3 PT with some differences. Most of my ME2 crew is dead - except, Garrus, Tali and Jack. This impacts choices and outcomes in ME3. War assets are lost. The salarian councilor dies if Thane isn't around. Rodriguez dies at Grissom without Jack. The geth and quarians cannot attain peace without Tali. Who's fixing my damn forward batteries without Garrus? No Maelon's data? Eve is dead in ME3. Since this is RP, we're all using headcanon to imagine how this turns out in the end. No Eve? Well, it might be a bad idea to cure the genophage because unchecked krogan aggression might lead to disaster. Even/Wrex combo? Cure it. The future looks great. Headcanon is the biggest part of this because we get to see the outcome of at least some of our decisions, good or bad - and we see it over the course of games rather than within just one game. It's stronger in ME that DA because the same main character is present and so relationships continue on in some fashion.

I also would like to add one more thing. Gaming as a hobby is loaded with all sorts of pros and cons. Extreme time sink, isolation from reality, danger of externalizing self-worth to a form of entertainment, dealing with unpleasant people, insult to my own intelligence, and most amazingly boredom... those are serious cons for me personally (because let's be honest, I have overindulged).
Mass Effect is all ‘pro’ for me, with zero ‘cons’. It's not a guilty pleasure, just pleasure.

Rodriguez dies at Grissom without Jack. No she doesn't. Its Ensign Prangley that dies without Jack

A)At 12 years old I had never seen anything from Mass Effect before the E3 reveal of ME3, and being the fool that I was I thought using Kinect voice commands to give orders to NPCs in game was the most badass thing ever.
B)I enjoyed the feeling in Mass Effect 3 of having no clue what was happening (it being the first ME game I played) but enjoying every moment of it anyway.
C)I go back to ME2 most often for the simple reason that it makes me feel like a complete badass.

This setting was very compelling, and Shepard was an effective avatar for me to explore it through.
That's about the long and short of it.

a) I'd read and heard so many great things about the Mass Effect series, that I really wanted to try it. Almost everything. The amazing story, fantastic, relatable and realistic characters, futuristic and astronomical setting, adorable and emotional romances, and the hella addicting and fun gameplay. c) I haven't played the Mass Effect series in a few years, but I am getting a PS4 Pro and 4K T.V. so I can play Dishonored 2 and Mass Effect: Andromeda.

I agree with the notion that I like Mass Effect because I'm writing my own story, but I would distinguish it because Mass Effect is the only series where I feel like I am writing my own movie. I know the choices are kind of narrow but to me simply directing what kind of tone my protagonist has is enough coupled in with the legit choices here and there.
Neither Telltale story, Life Is Strange or Witcher fits the same bill because they don't have create-a-protagonist and they have more defined characterization for the hero.

I'm with Mikefest and Fraggle.
I saw a nice looking ME2 cover and once played i was hooked. Not a fan of sci-fi in general but the ability to change the story was something I'd enjoyed since the old Goosebumps books. Alternate endings make me especially enthusiastic it's something that instantly gets my attention. So ME2 was like a dream game.
Bought all other games and later all available dlcs one at a time playing through each before i got the other.
Just seeing what it added.
The rest is history.

Just moved to ME2 on my second run, and see absolutely no reason why I won't do a third run. I find that MET has very low player fatigue factor. I also love the MP component, and that it can be done solo/group and in an easy to find pug, with a bit of a collector fever, but on the whole not triggering the crazy grind & not over-the-top-rewarding the good players vs bad players.
I have dropped two games this year alone, one after 4 months of playing and another - after 9 days. AND I have a DA on my machine that I have not tried.
