I'd like to be optimistic it will come out sooner, but given they had a later start to development, the issues with Andromdea and Anthem being delayed, I'm thinking it is released later. I'm not expecting it before 2020, maybe later depending.

I'm expecting a 2020 release, but I said Under because I think late 2019 is a strong possibility.
I actually think they may be further along with DA4 than we think.

The tipping point for me is when level designers start tweeting about the level they are designing, like @sjosz did with MEA. That's production work that would allow us to narrow the time range quite a bit. Right now, the release date could be anywhere between 1-JAN-2019 and 31-DEC-2020, a two year span, given best guesses. And that's barring major disruptions, like a strike or the entire combat engine needing to be scrapped and redone, etc.

Some people are posting as if they haven't even started production, but I find that highly unlikely. Not all level designers are going to be as talkative as sjos, especially when they aren't supposed to acknowledge the game exists.

For the sort of connected, story based series like Dragon Age, a 6 year gap between installments would be too much. A 5 year gap is too much, really.

I don't see why it needs to take so long. I mean, DA2 was the best game in the franchise and they made that in about five minutes.

Not all level designers are going to be as talkative as sjos, especially when they aren't supposed to acknowledge the game exists. I've touched on this before, but we do have some idea... From what Alexis said, the DA team started to ramp up after MEA finished, but there was only a small team working on it (presumable in pre-prod) before that. The Writer's Pit only started coming together earlier this year. So it sounds like they've only been out of pre-prod for a few months now. But there's still a question as to the size of the team right now with Anthem being the priority. Also, how ambitious are BW's plans for DA4? Something small in scope? Something more in line with Witcher 3 in scope? Remember, it took CDPR 3.5 years of full production time to make W3... with a larger team... and on an engine they were familiar with. If DA4 was in full prod right now, we'd be looking at early 2021 for something similar in scope, possibly longer considering the team size discrepancy.

Apparently it's been two years since Trespasser was released... I find it hard to believe that they weren't doing anything on DA4 (regardless of scope) during that time period.

DAI itself took about 3 years, and they had to make all the frostbite assets from scratch. Now they may/may not need to do all that, they can get on with the actual game if the groundwork is laid in the earlier game.
A good interview with Obsidian revealed last week that Pillars of Eternity 2 is a lot easier for them to make, because they had the first game to work out all the trouble. The developer in the interview said now it's like driving a lamborghini compared to the stops and starts they had with the first game. So . . . here's to hoping DA4 before 2020.

Apparently it's been two years since Trespasser was released... I find it hard to believe that they weren't doing anything on DA4 (regardless of scope) during that time period. They were in the Concept Phase & Pre-Prod during that time. As Luke touched on in another thread, it starts off with small team brainstorming new ideas and prototypes a bunch of new mechanics and/or tech changes. Once those start getting approved, barring something horrible happening, you move into Pre-Prod. You've also got artists creating concept art, nailing down the story, what levels they plan to make, puzzles, and the rest of the foundation work for when Full Production begins. It's just that this has been an extended period due to Anthem & ME:A tying up the bulk of BW Edmonton & Montreal. Hopefully it's been profitable time though, as it's much more than they'd normally have for this.

I voted over. They aren't in full production yet so far as I'm aware. I imagine that Anthem is going to delay them further even after release; it's the type of game that requires significant upkeep, and if it's a success they'll want to milk that cow for as long as they can, keeping more hands on deck to keep putting out more content for it. If it fails, then I imagine there's a not insignificant chance that they put the breaks on everything, review what they have and make sure they aren't making the same mistakes with DA4 that they did with MEA and (hypothetically) Anthem, and make sure that it gets all the polish.
Of course there's also a chance that if Anthem fails they go into panic mode and rush DA4 out so as to recoup losses, but who knows.

I'm unsure whether they are in an extended pre-production phase, or starting production with a relatively small team. A variable I forgot to mention earlier is the loss of BW Montreal as a support team. Their contribution might have been later in the cycle for, e.g. DAI, but not having those resources at all to help out with DA4 may mean a longer cycle, rather than a shorter one. I imagine this is what a stock analyst feels like when trying to update a model for predicting a company's EPS. Only they get quarterly filings to work from, all we get are mean tweets!

I have a feeling under 2020---mostly because they've been using frostbite for a while now, and they already have a lot of things like animations, possibly even design assets (grass, trees, wall textures, etc) that they reuse and already have done from DAI and MEA and (ugh) Anthem.
