You know the thing about greed fall is the graphics look pretty good. Like very good. The spiders games I have played (mars war log, bound by flame, and technomancer) were lacking in that department but that was a given since it was an indie game. This game looks close to AAA level graphics to me.
All the previous "spiders" games I have played were alot like cheaper DAO games. They heavily invested into RPG elements and story while being less then mindblowing in terms of gameplay and graphics. This looks like they kept the story and RPG elements and added good graphics and good gameplay. In other words I look forward to this game.

I just realized something curious. Leshen. Although the creature design in this game is not nearly on the same level as Witcher.

I just realized something curious. Both looks like a wendigo, it's a Canadian natives mythical creature. The Leshen in TW3 was based off both the wendigo and the slavic Leshy.

From what I've seen and heard, graphics aren't spectacular and you may find some low res textures here and there, but the atmosphere and attention to detail is quite impressive.

Just think it's telling that basically all first-hand impressions have been overall positive. Don't understand the people (not necessarily here) constantly going on and on about "but it's jank! but it's made by Spiders!" or "it's going to be a mediocre flop like Technomancer and Bound by Flames!"
Seems like some are hoping it'll be bad in order to have lowered expectations.

I think there's a difference between tempering your own expectations and trying to ruin other people's excitement because you're afraid of being hurt, but you can't honestly blame anyone for not wanting to get their hopes too far up. Regarding the lack of minimap though: I don't know how many weeks I spent staring at that little circle in the corner of the screen in Wild Hunt before I thought to turn it off so I could actually look at the graphics.

Please correct me if I'm wrong, but I'm pretty sure Aphra is the first ever BLACK female romanceable character in a RPG. I instantly had to pre-order the game when I was able to discern she was romanceable through my research (along with the other qualifications that I like about the game). I thought she was going to be another Vivienne (black female party member with depth but somehow non-romanceable). Thankfully not. Interesting that it took an AA budget company to break such an easy barrier, rather than the heralded diversity-inclusive, progressive AAA studio known as Bioware, or even other big AAA companies like Obsidian. Pretty crazy actually. Kudos to Spiders, honestly. Lowkey it's something I really appreciate as a black male gamer. I know LGBT inclusion is more visible but racial inclusion of any kind in a video game is just as impactful. Orcs and blue aliens running around but non-white people are hardly even a thought process... Yo cloud9 remember this thread? bsn.boards.net/thread/9126/after-games-romance-african-american... and how can anyone not tell she's female? I remember all to well.

Ah fuck it, I'll be irresponsible and pre-order the game now. I feel like I'll buy this game regardless of what happens with my new job tomorrow. That's how my pre-order policy usually and ideally works as well. If it's a game I'm excited for and something I'm 99% guaranteed to play soon rather than later I pre-order. Did the same with Andromeda. Some games I just have to get my hands on no matter what. Well, this is an industry full of false promises and mediocrity. I suppose so. People with first-hand access, and review sites, have no reason to hide the negatives of the game if there are any, though.

I actually get the opposite impression from this track. I get the feeling it could be used, particularly towards the end, to represent the PC cutting ties with the old world and deciding to make a new life in Teer Fradee. I do wonder whether it'll be possible for Teer Fradee to regain its isolation in light of its recent colonization. Also, will you be forced to choose between saving the old world with a cure or saving this new one? Will you be able to somehow do both?

I get the feeling it could be used, particularly towards the end, to represent the PC cutting ties with the old world and deciding to make a new life in Teer Fradee. I do wonder whether it'll be possible for Teer Fradee to regain its isolation in light of its recent colonization. Also, will you be forced to choose between saving the old world with a cure or saving this new one? Will you be able to somehow do both? Heh, we'll see. Maybe in a second playthrough as a female De Sarlet I'll feel inclined to a 'going native' or a potential compromise ending. And yeah, the locals somehow driving off the settlers and blissfully maintaining their grip on the island for more than a few years would be pretty hard to swallow. And it would obviously never ever have happened in real life. More likely, the "ideal" ending is De Sarlet wrangling some sort of trade deal between the natives and New Serene where they essentially have to export everything valuable on the island in exchange for autonomy. Right now I'm imagining a rather disturbing scenario where the settlers back off and start playing the native factions against each other until their conflict escalates and one is forced to ask for assistance in exchange for a proper foothold or even just a set amount of resources. It wouldn't be the first time disastrous external intervention has lead to vicious tribal warfare with modern weaponry thrown in for shits and giggles. I'm really, really curious to see how deep they're going into the whole issue. In one of the earlier interviews a creator equated the imperialistic decisions in the game with "being a dick" in any other RPG, implying a rather shallow and hamfisted storyline branch to my ears. In the one mikefest just provided a link to, the statement is that each ending can be seen as good or bad depending on viewpoint, indicating at least an attempt to write each approach to the main conflict as understandable and realistic human narratives.

Remember, this world has magic. Maybe they'll just hide the island like they did with Themyscira. True. Although I feel like "If you aren't nice to foreigners then they'll just turn their land invisible" is a pretty silly message to build a video game ostensibly tackling colonialism on. Same with, say, the Harry Potter series. You can tell that it doesn't seriously attempt to answer the question "How are wizards and muggles going to figure things out between each other?" because one party is capable of perfectly and conveniently avoiding and/or exploiting the other with no significant drawback to their way of life, which is an option that real people just don't have when dealing with other real people.* It sounds like they're trying to go for something more focused and useful here. *I'm still waiting for someone to suggest a Harry Potter sequel set in the late 00's with video camera surveillance exploding in the muggle world and a PTSD-ridden frazzled Auror Harry and a team of overworked Obliviators trying to deal with all the security breaches.

I think all you need to do to have the island isolated, is convince the Nauts to never sail back to it (which will probably require high reputation with them). They are the ones who control all things related to navigation and seafaring. I'm even wondering if there might not be some Dune inspiration with the Nauts (i.e. Guild of Navigators). This is a fantasy settings with magic and weird stuff happening. Maybe seafaring requires some magical aptitudes or something.

I have a hard time imagining that the Nauts control navigation and seafaring everywhere. They're just one guild, right? I don't see that nobody else is capable of traveling to the island if they refuse or even that they will collectively abide by a decision like that even if it's somehow made official policy. Everybody on the mainland knows about the Island. That would just make the first disobedient Naut captain the richest sailor in the world. In any case, whatever nation Serene is from presumably stumbled on the island by accident. If it isn't for some reason firmly in their waters then it's only a matter of time before others do as well. It'd be really interesting if there was a way to convince Siora to help her people realize that war with the mainlanders just isn't going to end anywhere good for them, and that accepting the new rule on the best terms they can is their only hope for a dignified future. If all the pressure for resolving the conflict semi-peacefully doesn't just rest on De Sarlet turning traitor and kicking his own people in the balls.

If seafearing in the setting requires special powers that only the Nauts knows how to cultivate, it is totally possible. That's how the Guild of Navigators had total control of space travel in Dune. GreedFall is a fantasy settings, it's not an alter-Earth setting.

So, uh, GreedFall is outselling Gears 5 standard edition right now on Steam. Not just that, it is number 2 top seller right now! And actually it is number 1 sold game, as Berlin CS:GO Major Championship Viewer Pass is number 1 right now.
Spiders must be very happy with PC sales right now.

If seafearing in the setting requires special powers that only the Nauts knows how to cultivate, it is totally possible. That's how the Guild of Navigators had total control of space travel in Dune. GreedFall is a fantasy settings, it's not an alter-Earth setting. True, but the sailors in Greedfall still look more or less human, and look like they have more or less human needs. Even if what you're saying was the case there's precious little chance that every Naut in the world would resist such a lucrative opportunity as being the only captain willing to take you and your fleet of greedy mercenaries and settlers to the magic island. And even if so there's no way the guild will exist as it is, let alone maintain that level of extraordinary discipline, forever. The natives are going to have to deal with the rest of the world finding and catching up to them eventually. Only the longer they wait, the more accurate and efficient, powerful and numerous those rifles and grenades are going to be. Again, I feel like "we can just quickly and effectively cut all contact, no fighting then" is a fake solution to the whole issue, and would be a cop out for the game. PC gamer here. I don't care about jumping and no multiplayer is a point in Greedfall's favor You don't seem accusatory but I'll still note that I didn't say all PC gamers. And good for you. We're on entirely the same page, then. Screw multiplayer.

I went ahead and pre-ordered as well. There's always Steam's refund policy just in case but my guess is the game will get at least a low 80s score on metacritic.
