So I finished the game finally. Loved it, but... I failed to romance anyone. You really need a guide, because to initiate romance is not obvious at all. I poorly interpreted what's for romance and what's for friendship. I got friendzoned by my own dialogue options, aaaaagh! Going by what I've read online, there seems to be some bugs related to romance as well (where people get to the rendez-vous point, but nothing happens). And I know that Siora has some quest choices that also affect her romance, it's not just dialogues/disposition. She might not be the only one. I stupidly took Siora on Aphra's quest to visit the Natives and then spy on their ritual and lost a point from her friendship and from the Natives but still on Friendly with the natives at least. Do you know if this will kill any chance at romancing Siora or getting full friendship with her? I am wavering re romancing her and Aphra ATM.

It shouldn't stop you from gaining friendship with Siora and that quest doesn't affect her romance as far as I know (it's some mid to late main story choices that do). Note that Siora romance is the latest one you can "unlock" as her personal quests are all tied to the main quest lines and the last two are late game (like in the last 20%). Aphra's personal quest line isn't gated and you gain back the native lost point by the end of it.

Ugh, looks like I wasted my money on this game.
A few suspect things in the game but for the most part pretty good at the start, some okay quests and such, okay I think I will enjoy the game as I am just about to leave the 1st area......And then the game suddenly morphs into Dark souls with an idiotically difficult boss fight in which they get rid of your companions and make my 4th level mage take on some big tree monster.
Okay after getting spanked numerous times I lower the difficulty to the lowest level, makes no difference, so I then use about every potions i have in my inventory to help.
Makes no difference.
I hated dark souls for these type of boss fights. I know others like them, not me.
(And I really don't care if it is a L2P issue on my part. If you lower the difficulty to the lowest setting to get by an area of any game it should be easy.)

I can't help you magic wise but with a sword and a gun I just kept getting behind it and whacking it and shooting it, maybe 10 times in total of both and it went down pretty easily.

I haven't read all of the pages, just skimmed through because I am afraid of seeing spoilers by accident. I just wanted to stop by and say how much I'm enjoying this game. I first thought I could finish it in a couple days. But I was pleasantly surprised. The more I do, the more I seem to get, and the story is really interesting so far. Had a few surprises and a few not surprises so far I'm playing as female De Sardet and I'm planning on romancing Kurt but I'm like 55 hours into the game and haven't gotten his rendezvous yet. I guess I need to progress the main plot some more so I'm working on that (I got sidetracked doing side quests and exploring stuffs). Beerfish don't feel bad and don't give up. I thought it was me as well, but I've talked to a few friends that also had trouble with that first fight. I think in my case I had trouble adapting to the combat. After dying like 10 times I walked away from the game for about an hour. Came back and finally beat it. (I ended up using stasis alot, it helps). And the story really picks up after you get to the island I'm also glad that I mostly ignored development beforehand and went in blind. That way I had no preconceived notions about what it should be. I have read it being compared to DA and honestly other than having dialogue with occasional choices/branching storyline due to said choices and companions, it really is it own thing. The combat takes some getting used to. I was sure I was going to hate it the whole time, but it grew on me. If I had to find one nitpick it would be the map. So much looking at the map and loading to change between, at least you get the nice campsite pause to sell, craft, change up party. Okay, I talked more than I thought I would and I probably will stay away a few more days so I can try to finish it up but remember - IT'S ABOUT TO GET DICEY!

I agree it’s absurdly difficult. I tried blocking/parrying but I was really bad at the timing. Once I got the stasis down it was no problem.

Hit Stasis as much as you can and attack it from behind. if you have to move to avoid it, don't get too far away or it will do a flying tackle at you that's really hard to avoid. This is the only really unavoidable fight of its kind in the game. There are other tough fights later on in the game, but at least with those you can always leave and come back at a higher level or better gear.

The "flying tackle" can be parried (right mouse button by default on PC) and mage can hold the parry up indefinitely (unlike weapons which require more timing). The only problem is the possible knockdown but you should have the time to get back up.

If this has already been mentioned I apologize. But what I found working very well for me when fighting the first boss was the sound it makes just before it sends whatever he flings at you. It's quite faint, but you can hear it a just before it flings it at you. It is detailed in the Eurogamer video posted many pages ago. When you hear the sound roll away. That helped me a lot.

I'll give it one more try this evening.
(Still and absurdly dumb game design decision.)

Yes and remember your special attacks. And make extra magic potions if you can. Also it does get better once you get past that annoying bit.

I got knocked down a couple of times. But dodging just at the last second made the fight much easier and managable. I'm a mage also. Don't think I used Stasis or got behind him. But I dodge alot and spammed the magic missiles as much as I could. He went down faster than I thought he would. Was kind of surprised after I saw the video of the boss previously! And thank you for the welcome 😊.

I just had a thought. De Sardet is actually so intimidating... Imagine a native, peacefully minding his own business. Then suddenly...door bursts almost off its hinges and a storm of words "De Sardet, Legate of the Merchant Congregation of Serene, representing my cousin, the governor of New Serene". I am surprised we can get any coherent sentence out of most NPCs in the first few seconds besides "da fuuuuq?".

Welp, it appears somewhere along the way I missed a dialogue option with Kurt and I can't romance him. Apparently there are supposed to be hearts for the dialogues (which are not showing up for me on PC) but I'm so far in the game and he's not letting me flirt with him I finally looked up a video and it looks like I picked one line different than the person in the video and that must've ended it before it even started *sigh* So now I don't even feel like finishing my 60 hour save I probably will rush my way through the rest of it now just so I can start over and *hopefully* do it right this time. Just annoyed that one flub ended the romance and not even sure how. Guess things weren't so dicey after all. *slinks off to cry in the corner*

Apparently there are supposed to be hearts for the dialogues (which are not showing up for me on PC) You need to have more than one romance interactions for the heart sub-menu to show up, otherwise it just shows like a normal line. Basically, wait until you did all the personal quests before picking dialogue options with a companion. You'll have two sub-menus, one with little heart (the romance stuff) and one without.

Yet I can bed Vasco and never had one heart option. :-\
ETA: I've also completed all companion quests as well. And he just ain't giving me any new dialogues. He's just not that into me, I guess. *cries some more*
