Hopefully someone here can help me. I have finally started playing this game. I have unlocked a magic skill line, "Stasis", and I can't figure out how to actually use it. I should be able to assign it to a key, but I can't find out how. How does this work? All skills are available in the tactical (aka pause) menu, you can either use the skill from there or assign it an "hotbar" key while in that menu. It's something you are asked to do in the tutorial with Kurt at the start of the game.

My problem was that there were a few weeks between my playing of the tutorial scene with Kurt and everythat that follows, because I got distracted by Fantasy General 2, which managed to monopolize my attention for almost a month.
Yeah, the game features far too much meaningless running around in far too big areas doing far too much random meaningless combat. Way more so than most other rpgs, which is remarkable since this is almost an intrinsic flaw of the genre. And there is not much actual roleplaying either. Clearly, Spiders have bitten off more than they could swallow. I still find the setting and the story moderately appealing for now.

You should stay away from Kingdom Come Deliverance then Compared to it, Greedfall is the tightest experience you ever had.

And yeah.....that was probably why I didn't finish Kingdom Come Deliverance. The combat was actually OK, but moving about takes so much time you get fed up with it eventually. In general, I like exploration, but only if there's something more interesting to find than the 1001st encounter with the same type of local wildlife and the 1002nd chest with random loot. As for sprawling adventure rpgs that nonetheless do it mostly right, I can only point to Pathfinder: Kingmaker and Pillars of Eternity. I put 200+ hours into P:K without ever being bored, but only 20 into Kingdom Come Deliverance until I gave up. I will probably finish Greedfall though, since movement is fast enough and playing on Easy I can get past the repetitive combat in a reasonable time. That wasn't possible in Kingdom Come Deliverance.

I just finished Disco Elysium - it was one of the stronger "role-playing" experiences I had for quite a while now. It's not action-RPG though.

This game reminds me quite a bit of DA2, only without the good parts (ie the character interaction). The thoughtlessly thrown-about copy-paste combat encounters, the crude copy-paste interior maps, the hours and hours of retreading old ground for different quests in almost the same way. Much more wilderness of course, but that looks almost the same everywhere. I'll probably finish this soon - I'm close to the final encounter - and then won't touch it again.
The setting is quite interesting, but the story turns out to be rather stereotypical after a promising start. They could've done much better with the same ingredients.

I have the same reaction.
Much like DA2 and Mass Effect: Andromeda, Greedfall feels like there's a great game under the surface just waiting to get out, but it needed more polishing and the realisation of it's full potential to accomplish it. I still enjoyed the game immensely, but as I said on the previous page, it does feel like there should have been more.

I wish they'd tightened it up and focussed on the game's strengths rather than making you spend the second half of the game sloooooowly jogging across areas you'd already covered before.

I got a copy of Greedfall for Christmas and am just nearing the end of it now. I have to say I also get heavy Dragon Age 2 vibes from it (which I absolutely loved, despite the rough edges of that game). But yeah, this game suffers from some of the same strengths and weakneses of that game. Lack of polish (and some mistakes like characters referring to my female PC as male a few times), lots of trekking around back and forth on the map, repetitive locations, NPCs that just stand around town, etc.
That said, I'm enjoying it much more than MEA overall, and as far as the side quests go, more than DAI thanks to the general lack of meaningless fetch quests here...much like DA2 most of the side quests all have some sort of story/narrative to them, that tie into the larger setting and themes of the story. DA2 made up for its weaknesses and lack of polish with a strong story narrative and characters. The story, voice acting, and characters in Greedfall are likewise really good...although they don't go into as much depth or detail with character interactions as Bioware traditionally does. For instance, some party banter or ambient gossip around town would have helped all that trekking around back and forth and help make the locations feel more alive. Overall, I'm enjoying the game, however and will look forward to more from Spiders.

Mentioning it here since there's not a thread for it (yet), but the upcoming New World definitely made me think of Greedfall and wonder how it will end up comparing in the end?

Mentioning it here since there's not a thread for it (yet), but the upcoming New World definitely made me think of Greedfall and wonder how it will end up comparing in the end? New World was originally a open world sandbox full PVP survival online game with real time action combat and no storyline. And I wouldn't touch it, as the testers were unhappy with the game in the alpha test so Amazon ditched a lots of the design last year. Nobody knows exactly what the game is supposed to be now and they haven't had anyone tests the changes since they unplugged the servers in June and there will only be a few weeks of open beta before it officially release in May. Amazon even added a pre-order price tag since they "re-announced" the game when it was originally $0. They are just trying to recoup dev cost at this point. edit: visually it does looks like Greedfall, because New World is an alter-Earth settings set in the 17e century.

Even if Greedfall seems like a success (maybe not financially, but at least from critics and players), I hope Spiders will continue with the Technomancer universe, I really love it. I've always loved anything related to Mars (Total Recall, The Expanse, The Martian, Red Planet, Ghost Of Mars, ...) and I like the concept of people able to manipulate electricity, it feels more "plausible" than other elements

Focus mention Greedfall before Plague Tale in their reports as the reasons for their record profits last year (Greedfall sold above their expectations too), so we can deduce that it either sold more copies or had a better ROI than all their other released games in 2020.

It was Focus best selling game last year, if it wasn't a financial success, they are in deep trouble. Really? Did Greedfalls ell more copies than Plague Tale? Greedfall also got more PR and marketing than Plague Tale, at least from my observations. And it wasn't scared to say it's a classic RPG with customization, quests and choices. While Plague Tale...wasn't quite sure how to announce itself I guess. It's not an adventure game, or much of an RPG, nor a platformer or a horror or a fantasy. I am not sure how to clasify it myself. It definitely is eye candy with interesting linear story, but all else is pretty much a corridor run from A to B.
I guess Greedfall had more components to draw on a bigger audience at the end. Plague Tale had less to offer, but was a very polished experience in it's small world. And while Greedfall is about 30+ hours with a decent replay value, Plague Tale has almost no replay value and is around 10 hours or a max of 15 is you really just run around taking too many screenshots.
Personally I wouldn't have even tried Plague Tale if it didn't pop in my Origin Premier library and I got mildly curious.

Early on, yes, I agree, Greedfall got more Marketing. However, I had the impression that PT:I made a bigger splash in the media when it released. Everybody was talking about the "surprise hit" while - at least on most gaming news websites I looked at - Greedfall kinda just came out and everyone was like "yea, nice, I guess it's here now".
No idea if this an accurate perception or how that would translate into sales figures though. In any case, I had fun with both and as far as I am concerned, Focus had a great year. While I had them down as this peddler of mediocre titles that existed somewhere in the background, they are finally on my radar as a publisher to keep an eye on.

I didn't mean it wasn't a financial success, I meant I didn't know cause I don't have the numbers, the only thing I have is metacritic and the sample of comments/user reviews I've read which were positive (except for the mandatory "it looks like shit compared to TW3"). So I'm really glad to learn it was a best selling game, maybe it's time for Spiders to recruit some more (and for me to watch their job offers ^^ )

It's most likely 3+ years away, but I am keeping an eye for it We know it won't be Greedfall 2 and they said they are kinda tired of Mars, so my guess is they will try something new again.

Tired of Mars ??? *RABBLE RABBLE RABBLE* OK, I'm a bit (VERY) disappointed, I seriously hoped for a Technomancer trilogy (The Technomancer being the 2nd) I hope their next IP will be scifi at least (I'm more of a scifi nerd than a fantasy nerd)
