I love games with replay value, so; ^ Castlevania 3 (Action Sidescrolling Platformer, NES, 1989) ^ Gradius 4 (Shooter, Arcade/PSP, 1999) ^ Shining in the Darkness (First Person Dungeon Crawler, Sega Genesis, 1991) ^ Shining Force 1, 2, CD (Strategy RPG, Sega Genesis, 1992-94) ^ Shining the Holy Ark (First Person Dungeon Crawler, Sega Saturn, 1996) ^ Shining Force 3 Sc.1,2,3 (Strategy RPG, Sega Saturn, 1997-8) Scenario 2 & 3 have English fan translation patches. Some choices you do in Sc1 affects Scenario 2, similar to Mass Effect Trilogy. This is my all time favourite game. ^ Mass Effect 1,2, 3mp (X-Box 360, 2007-12) ^ Skyrim (X-Box 360, 2011) ^ Fallout 3 2008 (X-Box 360, 2008)

For me, there's a few of them. Mass Effect 2, Gears of War 2 and 3 (can't choose between them, have to include both), World of Warcraft (specifically during the Wrath of the Lich King period from 2008-2010), Portal 2, Team Fortress 2, Halo 3, Dark Souls 3, Diablo 2 and 3 (they're very different from each other, but they're both great), Injustice: Gods Among Us, and Red Dead Redemption.

Wait, I forgot the Demon/Dark Souls series. The one set of series that harkens back to the 80s/90s Japanese golden ages of gaming.

Objective: Mario 64. After years of failures in the 3D platform genre, someone finally did it right. I'd have other games that I would have loved to start gaming with: Batman Arkham City, Blackflag, Portal 2, The Witcher 3, Skyrim. I don't think I would put RPG like PT or BG here, I feel like those games were too verbose to feel entirely like... well, games. And there are games that are nothing else but... games, and I like a pinch of something else on top of it.
Subjective: Vagrant Story. This was basically Dark Souls before it was cool. Had cinematography on par with MGS, better graphics than anything on the PS1, fantastic soundtrack, good shakespearian writing, interesting characters and story, interesting gameplay (V.A.T.S./rhythm), very satisfying intros and outros. It had some flaws sure, but nothing made me a "masterpiece" impression like this game during those last 16 years. And this game helped me jumping from JRPG to RPG. Like Dark Souls years later, I felt like this game was made for me.

Before getting into Dragon Age & Mass Effect, I was very into LOTR: Battle for Middle Earth (I).
But my fondest gaming memories involve a group of us with zero responsibilities playing 2-on-2 tournaments playing NHL '97 or '98 on the good ol' Grey Satan (PS1). Usually a make-shift bong was passed among us.
Way back in the grade school days, it was biking into town with my friend and blowing all our money playing Commando in the basement of the local college student center.
Lately I've discovered the entertaining hoot known as Borderlands 2 and have been playing regularly with my son (on Xbone).

Let's see... Off the top of my head:
Secret of Monkey Island and Monkey Island 2: LeChuck's Revenge
Telltale's Walking Dead
The Wolf Among Us
The Witcher Trilogy
Age of Empires I and II, if you're into strategy games.
Kingdom Hearts
And, if we're going Bioware: Mass Effect Trilogy, KOTOR, Jade Empire, Dragon Age (all 3).

So many wonderful memories, some I replay even today, like MoO2 and Dungeon Keeper. Actually, I still hold Master of Orion2 as the best 4X game. There's a reason for that, and that is the desperate (and very entertaining) mid-game struggle when it can go any way. Other games are too balanced and never let exponential gains and long-term planning have the same punch-through. Only Civ V is as well designed, but much more complicated, far less brutal and... too balanced. I doubt I'll ever see the like of MoO2 again. Much because the designers think these games need to be balanced, think the exponential effect need to be curbed. And that is IMO nonsense. Because that's what I think realistic gameplay is all about, the planning and buildup. The gamble is how to do it against different enemies.
But I'm ranting. I'm going to go about this in a particular way: How big experience the games ultimately became for me. Then it's suddenly much easier. A few immediately float to the top: Baldur's Gate. And then I mean all of it, Tales of the Sword Coast, BG2, Throne of Bhaal, because that's how I experienced it. My first RPG. Morrowind. Just wow, I was blown away. It did everything right, despite the crude technical state. I don't think later ES games have got it all right. Kerbal Space Program. This is a really far out adventure. The most important game for me currently.
Those three above are it, I think. But of course games like Vampire The Masquerade: Bloodlines, FO3, DA:O come close. Then there's a ton of shooters out there I think deserve to be mentioned, but the thing is one doesn't play them for so long time, and don't become so absorbed. Descent, Max Payne, Half Life, Far Cry,.. But I did play a racing sim for a long time, crazy good. Grand Prix Legends. Too difficult for almost everybody. You really had to be very serious. EVE Online had a very big place in my life for a while. But I can't say I came away terribly positive about it. The longer I played it the more critical I became over gameplay design decisions.
Generally admired games where I don't totally agree: Planescape Torment, didn't work for me. When I played this I had just discovered roleplaying in BG and IWD, and PST didn't quite offer the same for me. ME2. Sorry, that kinda killed ME for me.

I love these types of threads. I could talk about games all day long. - Threads of Fate - Vampire the Masquerade: Bloodlines - The Walking Dead (season 1) - Dragon Force - Suikoden - Chrono Cross - Dragon Age and Mass Effect - NWN2: Motb - Panzeer Dragoon (the first two for shooter fans and Saga for Rpg fans) - The Legacy of Kain series - Phantom Crash - Divinity 2 - FF9 - Baton Kaitos - Rune Factory 4 - The Longest Journey - Jumping Flash 2 - Breath of Fire 3 - Koudelka and the Shadow Hearts series - Klonoa: Door to Phandomile - Silent Hill (1-3) - Vandal Hearts - Persona series - Enemy Zero (I wouldn't be surprised if the makers of Alien: Isolation played this. In fact, I'd be surprised if they didn't.) - The Legend of Dragoon - Jet Grind Radio - Parasite Eve - Resident Evil 2

No BioWare games, ok:
- Deus Ex (actually the entire series, even invisible war was better than people make it) - Star Trek TNG: A Final Unity (best Star Trek game ever, so true to the source material) - The Witcher series (I was in since Witcher 1 and the games only got better from there, great stuff) - Outcast (way ahead of its time) - TES Morrowind and sequels (the best sandbox games I know so far) - Half Life series (need I say more?) - Assassins Creed Ezio trilogy (the high point of the AC series, where the ballance between an open world and the story was just right)
But all of this is of course ignoring Mass Effect, Dragon Age: Origins, Jade Empire and KotOR, which would also be way up on this list.
Side note: As you can probably see from the thread I made about it, I think Star Citizen has the potential to be all the way up on top of this list if it can deliver on the promises. We'll see.
Many more great games out there, this list is obviously just the top of the top of my head.
