Title says it all. Which game, overall, had the better cast of companions and why?

DA2 had the best banter debates, rivalry, and Varric in his natural habitat. Can't beat it.
Although, special place in my heart for all the companions. well, Viv plans to visit when I can craft a character that likes her.

DA 2 if I could also add in DAO's Alistair and Zevran. (I have nightmares about what DA2 did to Alistair and Zevran's looks...it's such a cruel joke). DA2 even has Nate!

Origins. Everyone in DA2 is whinny, everyone in DAI are boring. Only DAO has any interesting characters remaining.

I prefer Origins companions. They seemed far more interesting and funny. I cannot count how many times Oghren made me laugh. Gosh I love that dirty drunk dwarf. The companions in DA2 were WAY too whinny. In DAI the companions don't seem to have as much layers and have typical problems. "Oh I'm gay and my Dad hates me." "Oh I'm a trying to see if all this religion stuff is real." "Oh I need more political power so I'm not a worthless person." "I killed someone people and now I'm living a false life." Blah Blah Blah. Now, now I am not saying I hated all the companions in DAI, just saying I enjoyed those in DAO more.

Gah! I think Inquisition....or Origins....or Inquisition....or...damn it!
It's not DA2 as it has the only two companions I actively dislike - Anders and Fenris - despite Isabela being my favourite companion across the series.
Um...
Fine. Inquisition. By a hair.

DAI had the best companions so far. DA2 was definitely the worst. I didn't feel like any of the companions were truly friends of Hawke or feel much connection to any of them. Maybe the reason why is because you could only talk to them during their personal quests. In DAO and DAI you can talk to them whenever you like. That makes them feel more like actual companions and friends rather than just quest givers.

A tie between DA2 and DAI, with DA2 getting slight advantange because of the banter, which, imo, is the best in the entire series.

It's close between Origins and Inquisition for me. I think Inquisition had the better interactions and cutscenes etc in developing the party members, but maybe Origins just shades it for the actual characters. Origins: I loved Morrigan, Alistair, Shale, Oghren and Zevran, while Leliana and Sten were okay. DA2: Anders and Carver were my favourites. Was ambivalent on most of the others (I'm not a huge Varric fan. I still like him, just think he's a bit overrated.) Inquisition: DORIAN!! Cassandra, Blackwall. Those three were generally my go-to companions. I liked most of the others too - a bit less keen on Vivienne and Sera but still quite a strong cast. Plus the advisors as well, who were very well integrated despite not being party members. Awakening is harder to judge since there wasn't as much time for development. I really liked the dynamic between Nathaniel and the Warden if the Warden was a Cousland. So probably Origins followed closely by Inquisition and then DA2 behind.

Origins.
DAO's characters had more facets to them. DA2's were stereotypes. DAI's were less simplistic than DA2's but still too much single-facet characters.

Inquisition for me. I liked the broader mix of personalities and viewpoints (especially if we factor in the advisors as well, since they're basically non-combat companions), and found their banter and dialogue in general to be sharper. DA2 probably had my least favourite group.

I like Inquisition most because of how much banter and commentary each companion has and because you have so many different situations you can get involved with them. I mean - sitting on the roof with Sera, her tackling you, or having Solas take you into the Fade. Or Cassandra chasing and trying to beat up Varric, Bull getting knocked on his ass by Cass etc.
It's the improved animations and location changes that the updated graphics engine has made possible that has really elevated the companions as well.
In DA:O and DA2 you had to utilize your imagination a lot more. There were a ton of great, well written scenes, but usually you had to fill in a lot of blanks yourself.
I also like the fact that companions could get romantically involved on their own in DA:I (similar to Mass Effect 3), which created a good illusion of them having a life outside of your adventures. DA2 handled this pretty well too, with companions living on their own, but DA:I ends up better overall I think.

I think Inqusition has the best cast, or atleast the one i found myself most Interested in. Though throughout all the Dragon Age games there is really only one companion i don't like, and that is Velanna.

DAO for life. I actually like all companions in this game. They all felt real because they didn't show their true colors right from the start, you know, like real people usually are. Even though I enjoy the companions in DAI, minus Solas they are all what you see is what you get. I would even say I prefer DA2 over DAI because DA2 has Isabella, and Varric was so much fun in this game. Though nothing beats DAO in that regard.

DAI for Cass, Sera and Dorian. It helps that the voice acting is amazing across the board (except Blackwall). DAO comes close due to the writing of Leliana by Sheryl Chee and Claudia Black's great voice, it's just that DAI has so much more. DA2 languishes at the bottom for terrible characters, even if the banter was good.

I tend to seesaw between DA:O and DA2. The DA:O cast is my overall favorite (I like 'em all!), though DA2 has some of the best banter in the entire series (especially between Purple Hawke, Varric, Izzy, Aveline and Daisy).
DAI I felt was the weakest of the 3, though I think in part the way banter is handled in the game is somewhat to blame. Because the game is so spread out, I really think we needed more scenes with all (or larger groups) of the companions together so we can see them interact and get a better sense of how they bond (or not) over time. I never really felt a sense that this was a team like I had in the previous games.

I went with Origins because the characters seemed the deepest and I loved almost all of them. Plus I never get sick of Morrigan/Alistair banter.
DA2 had good banter but we didn't have enough interactions with the companions, making it harder to get attached. I only really liked Aveline, Isabella, and Varric out of that group.
The companions in Inquisition were also quite good. This was a close second for me.

DAI. I think the writers just keep getting better with every game they make. Inquisition had the widest range of characters all very different from one another and the romances were also very different from one another as well. The writers did an excellent job with DAI.

DAO has my favorite group of companions, i loved almost all of them and the ones i didn`t love i still liked.
DAI cast is my least favorite not because i didn`t liked the characters (some of them are favorites) but because unlike the other two games I did not feel that it was a group of friends but a group of coworkers (with a few exceptions).

The DA:O companions mostly feel like teens trying to find themselves. Wynne and Sten being notable exceptions. As I call them - the Cheerleader, Jock and Goth are just boring teen archetypes for me. I feel like DA:I companions are more adult - they have made decisions about their lives and are dealing with them. Even Cole - who is obviously searching for his life - brings a level of gravitas I think is deeply lacking in DA:O. Even Leliana and Morrigan seem much more mature in this game.
You never get the impression that anyone in DA:O would have amounted to anything or even tried to do anything in the absence of the player character. They certainly would not have banded together. Morrigan was happily hiding in the wilderness. Leilana was hiding in the chantry. Oghren was hiding in a tavern. Sten was a prisoner. Shale was deactivated. Alistair was a quitter. Zevran and Loghain were working for the bad guy team. Only Wynne was trying to do something positive and useful in your absence. And she was about to get ganked by a Rite of Annulment. Meanwhile.. Cassandra actively forms the inquisition. Solas and Varric have already signed up before you do (more or less). Blackwall is out trying to defend people from the fighting. Dorian is opposing the Venatori on his own. Sera and Vivienne seek you out to offer assistance. All these characters were actively trying to stop bad stuff without needing you to make them do it. The Inquisition gave them a means to be more effective at what they were already doing. You don't have to pull their heads out of their butts to get them to help.
I think DA:O companions are more traditional - they're defined by the Warden and the events revolving around the PC. The DA:I companions are not shackled to the Inquisitor like lampreys - they serve the Inquisition first and then come to respect/or hate the PC.
