How recent are we talking about here? Last 2 years? Last 5 years? Last 10 years?

but if something was influential...choice between Minecraft or Dark Souls...but id give the edge to Minecraft because it really helped in spearheading the current indie boom.

I really enjoyed the First Law Trilogy, however it didn't seem complete, despite that it still was great. But the best novel I've read this year was Shogun by pure miles. Shogun by James Clavell? Amazing book. Also great miniseries. That's the Japan I admire /notweeb

Reboot it, Remake it, Remix it. From a time constraint standpoint getting your hands on a uni/multi-verse that's already got a setting/theology/culture/fan following is sure handy, but... I appreciate a new idea. I am a long time sufferer of Worldbuilder's Disease, I love it. For my part I have so many ideas for worlds rattling around in my head I can't even conceive of writing say, fanfic or something. I've never really needed/wanted a setting that wasn't my own creation. But I am pretty biased towards that to be fair. That being prefaced, what's the best new I.P. in any medium you've seen in recent years? Free form, anything goes. (Well maybe not parody-pr0n...) *** My vote ↓ Brandon Sanderson's Stormlight Archive. Spoilered just in case you haven't read it. There are pictures that will possibly amount to mild spoilers for some smart people. Brandon Sanderson's Stormlight Archive series and arguably his Cosmere in general. Specifically though, the world Roshar it is set on. Why? Well beyond his amazing writing talents Sanderson managed to capture a setting I hadn't really seen before in a good fantasy series. He took "a day at the beach" and ran with it. Ran pretty far actually; he stretches a coastline habitat over the span of a few countries thanks to some super-storms that ravage the land periodically. Here are some in-book drawings of some of the flora/fauna. *** Anyways, I confess my reasoning for this Topic is purely self-interest as I am hoping to get some good ideas to watch/read/etc that isn't regurgitated. (Albeit there are times I like to go back to something familiar and see it in a new light.) A few countries? Try most of a continent!

Books: Since Sanderson was already mentioned I'll say The Dresden Files. It's pretty much THE source of Urban fantasy for me. Nothing else I've read quite compares, it's the perfect merging of hard-boiled detective and epic fantasy.
Games: Alpha Protocol. Gameplay aside, I don't think I've ever seen a game so responsive to the choices I make. Remarkable especially given it's set in medias res, and you start the game being interrogated about your actions. It's basically Dragon Age 2 done right. I keep hoping for a spiritual sequel. Or an actual sequel.
Film: The MCU isn't exactly "new" given the characters have been around for decades, but I want to give special props to their Captain America storyline. They've really captured his spirit, creating a truly righteous character who manages not to be self-righteous.

Captain America has easily been some of the best of that lot. I thought even the first Captain America was better than some of the other films in this franchise.

Horizon Yes, maybe over 20 hours or so. Forced myself to keep playing until reaching the biggest city in the game. XCOM? Because isometric camera (+ extra action camera), turn based strategy, leveling up mechanism, fighting aliens is a great combination. Now remove action camera and add RPG instead of Strategy and you get current 3rd trend in RPGs which I don't like. The 2nd is MMOs and making good ol RPGs into lame online games (like NWN, ES, TOR), also out of question. 1st is actual RPGs with action 1st/3rd person cameras. Now this could be good, but the quality of their making isn't high enough (more like lackluster or too much 2nd rate stories because of Sandbox nature of the game). The last good one were NWN2, DA:O, DeusEX:HR, ME2, Fallout:NV and a few others. Now I'm not saying all isometric camera RPGs are boring. I will play Divinity Original Sin 1 and 2 and Tyranny. Others like them? Nah. And I still play 2000-2004 2D strategy games. Still charming and awesome. In 3Ds Cities - Skylines is there, more like much recent and better Sim City. Civilization V - Brave New World totally dominated the TBS genre. Nothing come close. Total War... has seen better years in historical games (Rome, Medieval II etc.), but its Warhammer is extremely good. Dark Souls series is gameplay wise great, story wise very good, but it can get rusty and boring if you get stuck somewhere and have been playing it for more than 70 hours... Paradox games... some suffer from repeating, too much useless micromanagement, being overpowered by bigger countries etc. Still if I want to play Victoria series would be nice or a new Classical era game. CK2? nah. I'm done

A bit of a peculiar choice but... Destiny, for an honorable mention.
The franchise has more design flaws than I care to list here, but I found the setting itself to be quite interesting.

It's not really 'recent' (ended in 2008), but I would go with Avatar: The Last Airbender. The series, that is, not the movie adaptation.

And that online mechanic, simply superb. If you want overrated check out Horizon Zero Dawn. Unless you just started playing hack and slash recently, DS does not have even remotely good gameplay...serviceable melee and trash tier ranged and magic combat. It is riddled with issues on nearly ( technical) level, but any criticism gets buried under Git gud! fanboyism. HZD does not have as wide combat system, but is leagues better when it comes to technical execution ( not to mention how much more fun it is to play).

I don't know that I'd call it "new", but since we don't have a time frame outlined here... Terry Pratchett's Discworld! A comic fantasy series where Pratchett addresses many common fantasy tropes. Oh and the world is flat and on top of four elephants, who stand on a gigantic turtle as it moves through outer space. Which leads to the question: What happens if the elephants or the turtle get a cold and sneeze... Earthquake? i remember that time when everybody in the Diskworld was terrified 'cause there was some new star slowly approaching, threatening to destroy the world. turned out it was just a bunch of turtle eggs containing tiny turtles with tiny elephants on their backs with tiny worlds on the elephants' backs. That means the Diskworld Turtle had a snu-snu long ago and will probably have another some day

Well since it seems that good new I.P. for books is apparently exhausted and people have moved on to TV and games...
Furthermore speaking of games I will go old school and choose some P&C adventure game I.P.'s: A New Beginning -2010 Moebius: Empire Rising -2014 Nibiru: Age of Secrets -2005 Runaway Trilogy -2001-2010 The Dreamfall Trilogy -1999-2017 The Broken Sword Quintet (All 5 Games) 1993-2013 RTS: Starcraft Series Homeworld Series State of WAR! C&C Tiberium and Red Alert Series. Maybe...Ashes of the Singularity -not sure yet -have not got far.
I really don't care if some are old. Good I.P. is good I.P. -even if most don't know or care about them.
I left TPS adventure, RPG's, and FPS out of this. The forum is already heated on these types of games -I will not add that part to the fire.

Did you even play it? Horizon Yes, maybe over 20 hours or so. Forced myself to keep playing until reaching the biggest city in the game. Game is shallow and very by the numbers made, so it just kept getting more and more boring. Traded it in with Andromeda and Fallout 4. Then tbh I don't think you gave it a good enough chance (story-wise). I'm ~150 h and only on my second playthrough. Reaching the city is quite an early step. But if exploring and unlocking the many back stories tiny bit by tiny bit ain't your thing then *shrug*, each to his own. For me its one of the standout games since I started playing, along with the ME trilogy, and for some strange reason, I want to say the Crysis trilogy. And for something to completely different: Journey. How such a short game could make me have such an emotional response, took me completely by surprise. Books-wise: The Reality Dysfunction, Altered Carbon, and also agree with The First Law trilogy. Edit; Just saw the trailer for Altered carbon, oooooh I hope they do the book justice! But i don't have Netflix *sob*

Xcom: Enemy Unknown. Of all the games, I can think of that game out 'recently' thats the one I look back on with extreme fondness. Wasn't there one of those XCOM games that seems to be abhorred by a lot of people? Comparing DS to HZD. Tsk, tsk. This forum rebuttals itself . The Souls series sucks. That is all. TRUTH. Any game that tries to monetize the parapsychology of the paranormal is not worth it -especially when combined with fantasy. Furthermore any game that claims itself to be a console exclusive is instantly a game that I do this to: + If you are not going to make a game for all parties then don't make it. ..... .... ... .. . And if anyone is about to say go out and get a console. Sorry that is not happening. Some people like me can't use consoles due to medical issues -Hands lock up like a vice and swell quite big when using console. Finally diagnosed as severe Cubital tunnel syndrome combined with hand muscle spasms and mild Tetanus of the hands. Also I am not shelving out $300-$500 for a closed unit instead of a modifiable base system.
