To lighten up the mood, have some Solases: I just love the second screenshot. He looks like a Scooby Doo villain. "And I would have gotten away with it, too, if it weren't for you meddling nonpeople and your stupid Inquisitor!" If we are sharing screenshots I would like to show you couple of mine: Crestwood kiss The end of Trespasser. I mean this kiss is so beautifully rigged but the cinematography doesn't capture that at all. We are left with strange duck lipped Lavellan. Luckily we have flycam. Solas going to do his dread wolfy business while leaving Lavellan with disintegrating hand. And my favorite. Solas' eyes do very strange things during the fade tongue scene Fenassan pure gold! I sometines too get this strangely morphed head, but only when I use flycam and fly away from party and then come back. It's due to the loading of different subdivisions. Maybe this mod has bigger resolution than vanilla and is loading longer or unloading when you aren't looking at it.

Actually, the screenshots aren't mine, I just googled them.. I liked them so much I thought I'd share them. I have some Solases from my newest adventure, as well. One moment, he looks like this: And then this abomination appears when I turn my back for few minutes! It's nightmare fuel, be warned. Whoa, Solas with a stubble! Great screenshots As for the abomination picture: To lighten up the mood, have some Solases: I just love the second screenshot. He looks like a Scooby Doo villain. "And I would have gotten away with it, too, if it weren't for you meddling nonpeople and your stupid Inquisitor!" If we are sharing screenshots I would like to show you couple of mine: Beautiful screenshots! Yes, he does look like a cartoon villain - there should be a caption contest for this picture or something

Gah, I really, really want to play my Solas-mance playthrough, but I promised myself I'd finish Adrostos first.
It's so difficult, because Solas is so prettyyyy!

Jisandra I was indeed flying around Hinterlands with flycam, and to be honest, looking at Solas gave me a small heart attack when I returned to the party and he looked like that! And he wasn't the only one with a deformed head, Cassandra looked rather hilarious as well... it's offtopic for this thread, but I've to. And those screenshots are brilliant! That third one especially, I think I'm in love. *quietly steals it for a wallpaper *

*snip* In a recent presentation about the creative process involved in Trespasser, PW and another guy, *snip* That would be John Epler, whom we have to thank for all sorts of great narrative design in Inquisition, like say the romance scenes, and has in the past referred to Patrick on twitter as "you fucking fucker" (in a friendly way). I keep mentioning the Solasmance elf I'm working on, and I posted her pics elsewhere and thought I'd share here. Anise Levellan; elven mage. I haven't settled on an age yet, but minimum is 40. A widower with two grown children; she has led an interesting life. I intend to tie her to events from Origins, DA2, and she's been to at least 2 Arlathvhens. May even make her connected to Briala in some way. (obviously all head cannon.) I'm polishing her special for a Solasmance as I've never successfully had one. I have tried before and couldn't handle how confused that character was. I had never played a Dalish and just had no clue how to be one; so I started my research by playing a Dalish in Origins. She will see Solas as more of a colleague with a specialt, putting them on even footing....rather than "oooo, he's so wise" *bats lashes* that I've seen some others describe. She'll take the news about the tattoos in stride, and definitely not remove the vallaslin that has been part of her identity for over 20 years. Will most likely ally with the mages, drink from the Well, and disband regardless of who is Divine. Depending on how angry she is at Solas after the reveal, I do not know if she will redeem or hunt him down (i'm hoping for redeem, though). I've pondered remaking her to have Mythal's tattoo but I also like the God of Secrets. Oddly enough, she may actually become friends with Vivienne due to respect for a fellow scrabbling survivor; a first for me. I tried to make her age subtle but present; sunken cheeks, mild wrinkling, thinner lips, graying hair. What do you think? Shaping up to be worthy of Solavellan hell?

It seems like Solas' romance was almost like bonus content for people who play BioWare games to death. I'M FINE WITH THIS The Solasmance changed the whole feel of the game for me. [...] Even so, their focus can't be on keeping the vocal minority happy, especially if it is detrimental to their artistic vision. [...] I do not envy Weekes' responsibility to balance our expectations with what the company's plans have been for the franchise all along and his own narrative goals. Solas is one of the most important characters we have met. Making him a romance option was potentially a bad idea in the long run. It makes everything more complicated... I think they definitely wouldn't have gone through the trouble to add him in in the last min if it wasn't to convey teir artistic vision even more. And they did good because, as said in the tresp video linked earlier, they had this strong vision they wanted to stick to as close as possible. Now that it is here it became a huge part of the feels of the game (I don't mean it's the best part or the only one, everyone can decide for this). These games have always been about lore, but there are still people who only play them as just games to have fun and don't pay much attention to the backstory, for good reasons i won't doubt. And just thinking it's overwhelming to dive into such deep backstory is already a good one. But that doesn't stop Bioware to keep with their lorecraft, because it matters to them, etc etc My point is : They seem to know what they're doing, even if it's not perfect all the time because they are humans and the creator life is difficult. Well sure they closed the bsn and it was probably not the most clever move but as far as for their games i believe in them very strongly. Still I hope PW isn't headdesking himself right now lol, but I highly doubt it. Hiighly doubt it. I'm overly compassionate because I keep putting myself into his shoes and it feels SO APPALING to think about the amount of responsability right now, but I'm not him so I can't know. I don't have his mind, his past, his adulthood nor his legos. If there's something i haven't learnt from all my video game past, it is "don't trust the man" *glares at soasl*

Hi Bros, I lurked on the old thread but I passed through the veil and I guess I'm posting now.
I've also wondered if they regretted adding Solas' romance. But I am not sure that we actually should. I believe what Weekes said was that initially Solas did more direct lying and talked about elves more than he did in the final draft. He didn't say that they changed their mind on what kind of character they wanted him to be. Perhaps they had him lie less because they had intended him to be sympathetic to begin with and the direct lying made him unlikable. I've also heard it is normal and expected for a finished story to be very different from early drafts, so it probably doesn't even matter. Just normal changes in direction and no cause for alarm.
I guess what I am trying to say is that they wouldn't have made Solas how he is or made him romanceable if it was inconsistent with whatever their narrative goals are. I do think bioware has good ideas and they do seem to have a consistent artistic vision but unfortunately they also have some craftsmanship issues. So I am worried about that. we will see

spiritofsolace Stick in the Mud What i was trying to say is that everything they did so far was to deliver the best experience of their thedas and stuff, so if they thought all the solavellan stuff (which is such a huge part to the emotional depth of a very important char in the lore) was relevant enough to add it in the first place, it had to be that it definitely matters to them and I can't see that being tossed away, from an artistic point of view. This relationship is a gem (to meee) it's just a waste to let the chance to use it slip by. THEN of course they aren't forced to anything. They could even decide that EVERYTHING WAS A DREAM LOL and actually the story was about solas dreaming about "what could have been had he had powers" but he is just a mere slave spirit who almost died from evanuris madness and managed to escape into the deepest fade. Everything is bad. The Evanuris aren't stopped. World explodes. The end #callmeascenarist

There was only one instance where Bioware let down everyone - the Mass Effect3 ending. It was written by two guys and not consulted with anyone. In this wideo where Weekes talks with cinematic designer about creating feels he had put emphasis on working with team and getting feedback from fans (in Prime Solavellan we trust!). I don't think they will make the same mistake again. Of course, without Solavellan there wouldn't be problem. They would have two paths - redeeming Solas, or killing him. Those who swore to kill, both friends and enemies, would have virtually the same playthrough. But as I said earlier the romance path could be easly done. A fev remarks there and there and fandom is not furoius content. Remember Solas affected most players somehow, not only us, Solavellans.
And to be honest I only want a good game. They can do everything they want, but if it's good I will accept it. And if they along the way give me a closure I will be most happy.

I was listening to some audio recently and it was about why did Bioware pick Solas as one of the romance options. Mike Laidlaw said basically it was because it was affordable (because it was only with female elves) and thematic (packs a punch to the feels). Then later, Patrick Weekes said he wanted to humanize Solas and not have people see him as "just the villain". In a different recording, he said it was to make everything seem sadder (or something along those lines). I'm sure you guys have heard that before. I guess I was just wondering if you guys think they're happy with their decision to make him a romance option instead of trying to humanize him through a different way. It seems like the people in charge of the creative process seem exasperated when asked about Solas from us (you know his healthy and not crazy obsessive followers... heh.. heh). I would think they would be happy with how much it affected the fans, but then do you think they now have a much bigger hurdle to jump for the franchise? Or does it not matter? Just curious. Don't mind me. I wonder if they regret making Solas a romance option. I understand that most players play humans. Some of those people may play again and choose to play an elf, but only a portion of those will choose a female elf. It seems like Solas' romance was intended more as bonus content for people who play BioWare games to death rather than as just another romance option. I went through the Solas romance my first PT, so I'm a freak of nature. The ending of the base game didn't feel like an ending to me. Defeating Cory wasn't a triumphant conclusion. Nothing had "become clear". I imagine people who romanced Josephine or Dorian had a very different experience. The Solasmance changed the whole feel of the game for me. Even after Trespasser, there was no finality. My Lavellan was once more standing by herself, facing an unknown future. Then they even had to add that epilogue card made the end feel even more like an intermission before the next act rather than the resolution of Lavellan's story. Now BioWare has people like me, as well as those who hate the Dread Wolf's guts, expecting something more in terms of Inquisitor/Solas interaction in the future. Even so, their focus can't be on keeping the vocal minority happy, especially if it is detrimental to their artistic vision. I can't see how BioWare can truly satisfy Solasmancers (or rabid Solas-haters) without allowing the Inquisitor to return in the next game. I do not envy Weekes' responsibility to balance our expectations with what the company's plans have been for the franchise all along and his own narrative goals. Solas is one of the most important characters we have met. Making him a romance option was potentially a bad idea in the long run. It makes everything more complicated...unless from the moment Weekes wrote the romance he had planned to leave Lavellan hanging forever because it is so wonderfully tragic. Maybe Telana was a hint. Weekes has made tweets that gave me hope for resolution, but you never know. The Solas romance may be proving more trouble to the devs than it is worth. I don't think we should worry about this. If they regret making Solas romanceable, we're not obligated to feel bad about it, and I very much doubt Bioware would want us to. Regretting creative decisions is part of making anything and Bioware have definitely lived through worse on that front. And we don't actually know that they regret it, so let's not torture ourselves needlessly. I mean I know we have the reputation for it, and we've all chosen to take up residence here in the Nexus of the Spiral of Hell, but ... let's save it for the story itself. Also, Solas was never just for Solasmancers or for those who hate his guts. He's meant to betray *every* player, every Inquisition. I don't really know if it's only a minority who came away from DAI with strong feelings about Solas and a desire to follow up on his story, but if that is the case then it just means their writing has failed at what it set out to do. If they choose to to sideline Solas, they'll have failed their own story. Not saying it's impossible, but it won't be because we're too small and undeserving of resolution for our Lavellans. Let's not go there. I am also 1000% sure that Patrick Weekes has no intention of leaving Solavellan unresolved. He cried when he wrote the thing, remember. If the romance ends up cut, it won't be because of him.

I don't think it is just Solasmancers who feel that the Inquisitor's part in the story is not yet over or are the only ones who want to save him. A couple of friends of mine couldn't play Trespasser because it wasn't designed for their console. So I suggested they might want to play through the last bit of Trespasser on my PC with one of my "borrowed" characters in order they could experience the final scene with Solas for themselves. As neither of them had romanced Solas, I loaned one of my other elven characters.
The interesting part is that they both wanted to "redeem" Solas because they liked him as a friend and they both instantly said "so I suppose we'll be seeing the Inquisitor again as our PC next game." So it isn't just people who have romanced Solas who come away feeling like that. They both agreed that it would have had even more impact if you were his romance.
It is odd because even the Inquisitor's decision whether to reduce or disband the Inquisition, and the epilogue screens, don't seem to be conclusive as to what is going on. In some cases it is suggested the Inquisitor is retiring from active service, in others they are leaving "to save the world again". With some Inquisitors it seems to be suggested they are settling down for a less active future with their loved one, in others that is all a pretence and whilst they are letting people think they are retired, they are really anything but. Then we get the final map stabbing scene, which makes it clear that the Inquisitor very much thinks they are involved in dealing with Solas, even if they need a new team that he doesn't know. Bearing in mind DG said we only got half the story in DAI that was originally planned, and he had handed on the vision to PW for completion, that suggests that the Inquisitor was meant to be there for the whole story arc.
So I hope they don't fudge it with vague references or simply kill them off in order to account for any absence in the next game. I'm hopeful they will come up with something that will satisfy both those people who want to see the Inquisitor return and those who want an entirely new PC.

I'm hopeful they will come up with something that will satisfy both those people who want to see the Inquisitor return and those who want an entirely new PC. Seriously that'd be some insane screwing up, except if they pull out an EVEN BETTER IDEA (there has to be, always, forever, better ideas exist everywhere) I can't even picture how you wouldn't jump into what feels to be the right thing to do in such a strong obvious way. To me, if they don't do it, it'd be because they get their budget cut to $20. And this is my only worrying atm

Well they wanted to deal with Solas in mission which would happen after killing Coryfish and that was scrapped, so I think we are quite lucky. The Inquisitor retiring with their loved ones, this could be good excuse for going undercover. Just imagine elven servant, who is Solas' spy listening to two nobles talking about Inquisitor, and all they hear is that the former Inquisitor retired from being a honor guard to the divine and now lives in the country with her husband Cullen (for example). The stabbing Tevinter map scene happens regardless of your choices and for me it was definitive that the Inquisitor story has't ended.
As for Gaider saying that in DAI there is only half of the story originally intended, I suppose is the allusion to that they couldn't implement everything they wanted, even with extra year. Do you remember the DAI gameplay they showed us way before premiere? All the cool choices we could to in Crestwood? I think the open world zones originally had much more to do with main quest than now.

I don't think Bioware regrets the decision to make Solas character romancable - as someone mentioned before, Patrick Weekes got promoted probably thanks to his ideas for Solas. So I think they thought it through, they know what they are doing, and they have a plan for this character. Man, I really have to write down my theory about Solas
I mean, they would have to be crazy to regret it. It has all that is required for a great story: mystery, suprise, emotions, depth, ancient lore for geeks, layers and layers of meaning. This story is so much beyond the usual game quality. Also I don't think romance option would be that much trouble for them to write, it would be just a variation of friend Inquisitor that wants to redeem Solas.
My only two concerns for DA4 would be, that let's say someone above Patrick Weekes has a 'great' idea to simplify the story, because they think their target customers are now less demanding, and that it would be cheaper and/or faster or something. Making Solas a standard cartoonish villain, and omiting his relationship with Inquisitor (friend, foe, or lover) would be such a waste of great storytelling
Seriously, the decision to delete their forums made me really scared for the quality of DA4
*has a scary vision of DA - Pokemon crossover in DA4, because it is apparently cool and profitable these days*
And my other concern would be that we won't be able to play as Inquisitor, and that would also be such a waste, concernig the history and relationship that Inqy and Solas have. It would be very dissapointing if it would be a new character that would deal with Solas in DA4. But again, maybe someone above PW will want to have a new main character in DA4.
I think the simplest solution to that would be just to decide at the beginning of the game if you want to play as Inquisitor or as a new character. The story would be the same, you would only get some additional dialogues for Inquisitor. It wouldn't be that hard concerning that you would probably be undercover, in a new place (Tevinter?) and surroundded by new people (that Solas doesn't know). That way everyone (people who want to play as Inqy and people who want a new character) would be happy.
To sum up, I think the writers will give us a great story, if people above them won't interrupt them too much

Man, I really have to write down my theory about Solas
I'd love to hear and discuss your theory! We are theorycrafting now, but it's more meta, it's not the same. As for protagonist of DA4, I sent you to my post from yesterday: Ideal outcome would be - 70% of the game we are new protagonist, the normal person, yet charismatic and keen leader, interacting with new party members (it would be a good opportunity to do the merry bunch of misfits DA2 style) and doing mostly side quests and setting the main quests. The 30% of the game we are Inqy and it's mostly cutscens (talks with advisors style), it doesn't mater if Inquisition was disbanded or kept because regardless of that we are dealing with Solas undercover. It would be still good if it was 90% to 10%. I think the worst enemy of good DA4 is EA. They have history of rushing Bioware games (I'm looking at you DA2). But Inquisition being a huge financial success, I think they will allow Bioware to have creative freedom. And the more money Andromeda will earn the better.
