(especially when keeping power requires paying lip service to some of the more fringe ideas... and hoping no one actually acts on them). I don’t think I understand this bit. You saying you think the Qunari leadership would consider Viddassala to be fringe? And they would try to placate those fringe beliefs and tolerate them, rather than just brainwash her into compliance? I assume that, as is often the case with theocracies, the leaders have to pander to the “true believers”, even when the leaders have a more nuanced view. “True believers” are surrounded by followers who will side with them instead of you if they have to choose. As for why I think most of the leadership is not “true believers”, I’m basing that off of what Bull says. That sounds an awful lot like the priesthood is trying to delay internal pressure to invade. It’s the kind of thing you’d hear a politician say if they were getting pressure to do <insert diplomatically ill-advised action> from the religious portion of their base — quote religious texts at them to prove your creds, and hope that it quiets them down for a little longer.

I think I messed up the quote a bit but eh. Actually this is Dorian's question about how the qunari explain why they lost the previous war, not why they're not going to war again. It sounds more like they're trying to justify how they managed to let themselves lose because losing isn't something they're supposed to do. It's like, oh we didn't actually lose we're just wearing them down, honest!

But “losing when we still have troops left” ⇒ “we stopped invading at some point”. So the explanation for why they lost (read: retreated) is equivalent to saying “this is why we’re not fighting now.”

They've renewed active hostilities with Tevinter - right after their ploy with the Dragon's Breath didn't work.

And then the dreads caught fire(along with his coattails) and that’s why he’s bald. I will be very surprised if they don’t make young!solas sport the dreadlocks in a flashback at some point. The visual pun is too much to expect this team to resist, IMO.

I have a question about the dalish, thought it may be a good place to ask. (Solas disapprove incoming)
Why don't they seek historical knowledge in the fade ? IIRC in his quest, Solas said that the mages could have spoken (sorry if the grammar isn't correct) to Wisdome in the fade, that also mean that Dalish mages can do that too.

So talking to them in the Fade probably would not be encouraged. Interestingly, very early in the game, Solas states quite clearly that ANYONE who can dream can talk to spirits - mage or not. Inquisitor: I’m impressed that you could become friends with spirits. Solas: Anyone who can dream has the potential. Few ever try. My friends comforted me in grief, and shared my joy. Yet, because they exist without form as we understand it, the Chantry declares that spirits are not truly people.

I think one of the difficulties is that few people are actually aware that they're dreaming when they're dreaming (lucid dreaming). The only ones who seem to do so easily without some kind of ritual or other special circumstances are Dreamers.

From what I know everyone (aside from dwarves and tranquils) can dream - the difference between an average person and a mage is that mages can dream consciously. But I don't think they can control their surroundings or dream as deeply as Dreamers, which is why Solas expresses his surprise that Inquisitor can visit him in the Fade, even if Inquisitor him/herself is a mage.

And isn't it interesting that the romanced Lavellan Redeemer epilogue suggests that she can dream lucidly - regardless of whether she is a mage or not? ^-^ "Lavellan sometimes came awake from dreams in which her lover watched her sadly from across an endless distance. If they were more than simple dreams she could not say, for every time she reached for him, he vanished into nothing. Still she searched, and dreamed, and waited, for a way to change the Dread Wolf's heart."
