Look at old blue eyes! Give him credit, he could have just killed Varric, although destroying Bianca would pretty much do the same I suppose. Wrecked his spirit if not his body. Still, I dare say Bianca can be mended. May be that will be one of our quests, to bring back Bianca for the old boy. I will be interested to see what happened between Solas and the other two gods after the clip ended.

Everyone was losing their shit over Solas breaking Bianca, and I'm like, guys...both her namesake and Dagna are still around. She can be fixed. Calm down.

I will be interested to see what happened between Solas and the other two gods after the clip ended. Exactly! Everyone was losing their shit over Solas breaking Bianca, and I'm like, guys...both her namesake and Dagna are still around. She can be fixed. Calm down. Right! Like I understand the symbolic nature of the crossbow and, in the end, I hope Bianca's "death" serves as the stand-in for any potential Varric death BioWare was planning. She can be either repaired or recreated. Varric can not. So. I know where I stand on that one. I will say, from a player standpoint, for as much as I love Solas, that scene had me terrified for Varric. He was my first love and I was so disappointed in DA 2 when he turned my Hawke's flirtations down. LOL Solas is so... doggedly determined about this path and rather kamikaze about reaching his endgame that for as much as I wanted to believe in my heart of hearts he wouldn't kill Varric in that moment... I absolutely had doubts. Held my breath. And I kinda liked that it shook my Solasmancer faith like that a bit because for as much as I adore him, he IS the Dread Wolf. Wolves cannot be tamed, no matter how much people try to make wolf-dog hybrids, there's always that questionable element of the wild side snapping in for a moment. I genuinely wasn't sure if we'd see Solas react or the desperate nature of a cornered wolf. Ugh, my heart. I feel like everyone went into rage mode about Bianca and I'm over here just sighing the largest sigh of relief that Solas chose to disarm Varric and nothing worse. The wolf nipped, but didn't go for the jugular. Like is no one appreciating what just happened, especially with him being in full righteous god mode right now?

Like is no one appreciating what just happened, especially with him being in full righteous god mode right now? It did make me decide to swap back to my female Lavellan first run because she absolutely believes he is redeemable and in a way Varric proved it. There is still enough of Solas in there, he isn't completely the Dread Wolf, which of course fits with her having tamed him for a time and if he is still haunting her dreams, likely she is still in his. ("I'll never forget you" weren't just empty words). Also, it makes Varric's foolhardy attempt to talk him down more understandable because he knows what Solas means to her and that she wants to save him. Meanwhile, for those who are still hoping to romance Varric this time round (assuming they do allow romances outside of the companions), perhaps the death of Bianca will be symbolic in another way, finally freeing him from his doomed love affair with her. (It would give a male dwarf romance to balance out Harding) I just had an amusing thought. Remember how Bianca threatened what she'd do to us if we didn't keep Varric safe? Imagine what she'd threaten to do to Solas if he'd killed him! If the Titans start to wake up she might have a fighting chance at that as well.

Yes, my Lavellan absolutely believes he is redeemable and wants to save him. I was absolutely beside myself with delight when they announced there's a CC for recreating your Inquisitor nd inputting key choices they made that influence Veilguard because it's like... yes, thank you for giving my Lavellan that hope/chance maybe to succeed now where she failed in Trespasser. There has to be SOMETHING to a romanced Solas having the white wolf tarot card versus everyone else getting the feral/demon-looking Dread Wolf card. Gosh bless, I'd never hold my breath for a Varric romance after all these years, but the loss of Bianca 'bow definitely made me wonder if that could be a symbolic shedding of that "it's complicated" relationship in a way, too. LOL That would be my ultimate Disney playthrough as a player - Rook with Varric and Lavellan with Solas and everything ends in sunshine and rainbows. On a somewhat related/unrelated note given the whole Dread Wolf moniker and that Tower card an unromanced Solas gets at the end of DAI, it has made me wonder over the years if there will be some sort of wacky Fade shapeshifting battle thing that happens wherein Solas actually does take on that six-eyed demon wolf form. Because if so, I want nothing less than a chance for Lavellan to step in and essentially do a variation of the end of "We're Back! A Dinosaur's Story" where the kid talks Rex back down from terrifying to docile form. LOL

I never had a doubt. If Solas wanted Varric dead, he never would have made it up the steps in the first place. Edit to add: He also had the perfect opportunity to take out Rook, and chose not to. I think he WANTS to stop (or be stopped). He just doesn't know how.

The gameplay reveal had some bits edited out. It's possible that during the section they edited out and replaced with the message "The team battles their way deeper into Arlathan Forest. Until they arrive at Solas' ritual site" will have elven followers of Solas attacking us along with demons. However, it is also within Solas' character to try not put his elven followers into danger that way.
Also, that Trespasser epilogue slide that spoke of elves leaving the Inquisition and elsewhere to go work for Fen'Harel did show a fair number of elves (almost half) with staves. Maybe they were just walking sticks, but staves usually signify mages in Dragon Age. If so, maybe the elven mages are helping Solas get enough power for his ritual - the way Solas got the ex-Circle mages to focus their power on the Inquisitor so s/he could draw on it the first time they tried to close the rift.

Gotta admit - I just don't see Solas constructing all that scaffolding by himself But I'm not entirely sure we'll see that many followers actively on his side. He is a lone wolf - and even though we know he has people working for him (even met one in Trespasser), he likely keeps them at a distance, for a variety of reasons I could think of. Also, I don't think Solas needs any help on magic front - he is an ancient elven god after all, powered by magic bestowed by Mythal and whatever Solas did to strengthen his power (he does mention in Inquisition that using magic is like a muscle). Even that edited excerpt from the game finds it prudent to mention this:

While I understand reasoning behind leaving eluvian active for gameplay reasons, narrative-wise it just stupid. I'd expect something smarter from Solas, considering he warred against evanuris and surely versed in strategy. Unless it was used by his followers, who helped with ritual preparations, but were ordered to leave during the ritual itself? If the ritual is the result of a decade of preparations, shouldn't it be more guarded?
I just hope full version will include either explanation or a stage where we must look for a key.

But eluvians don't have to be active to be pried open. That's how Morrigan and the Qunari got access to at least some of them. And there's a reason why Dorian in Trespasser says that he now has enough of a sample to construct eluvians of his own (with some hints in epilogue cards suggesting that this indeed happened). And he probably didn't just construct an eluvians - perhaps he's constructed a lockpick for existing ones as well. Also, we got this info recently: Kala Elizabeth @kalaelizabethSolas and his worst enemy, poorly constructed scaffolding #DragonAge Michael Gamble @gamblemikehe was in a hurry. Wickedly Feral for The Veilguard @wicked_ItalianThe man had 9 years, Mike. NINE YEARS. 😅 Michael Gamble @gamblemikeOh no they’ve been tracking him for a while. Something else you’re gonna learn about…..

One of the content creators on You Tube, I think it was Ghil'Dirthalen but may be someone else, focused in on Solas' face when he turns to look at the other gods and showed that he is crying. Don't know if that is from fear or frustration that his ritual failed or even sadness at having to do that to Bianca, but that did give a whole new perspective to what might be going on in his head at that point.

Yes, and watching your slowed down frame by frame it is clear that it is seeing the two gods that causes the tears. So, now I'm wondering is he distressed by their appearance because may be he has done that to them? Or is it bringing back all his memories of why he shut them away in the first place? He's been living alone all this time, with no one who really understands what his People were like back then and suddenly there are two of them that do. I was also wondering about that mural in the 2020 trailer. Did he paint that after this incident? If so, why are they upside down? Why was there a mural in the Missing in an old temple that depicted the Dread Wolf attacking and breaking through into the Black City just like in the trailer? So, did he predict this in some way? This is so intriguing. It looks like the story is going to be so much more complicated than we could have anticipated. No wonder they waited so long for this reveal. Even September seems too long to wait to play it!

This is so intriguing. It looks like the story is going to be so much more complicated than we could have anticipated. No wonder they waited so long for this reveal. Even September seems too long to wait to play it! I personally take it as the last straw. Any restripe he felt after fixing Corypheus catastrophe is long gone, he is more alone than ever. He forcibly turned away from any prospect of happines he may have had with Lavellan, isolated himself, killed what's left of Mythal and has been in suicide-mode for the last decade. (imo there so much hints to believe he expects to die in the end, probably even want it). Previously mentioned exchange with Gamble suggests he was in a rush before ritual, so whether by our efforts or some other forces it wasn't a flawless ride for him, he is forced to act. Then he is faced by Varric, who tries to reach to him, to Solas no Dread Wolf, begs him to stop. It does burden him. I saw the take, that his first expression is of sadness and pain as he sees Varric for the first time in a decade - older and wearied by time. His plan fails before him (he shouts no twice, and second time was chilling for me). I'm 99% sure it's the reaction to some wards he placed on the statues to keep gods contained in the Fade. He probably hasn't expected for them to break free this fast though, he turned his back for a second to gaze at Rook. And, as he sees the are free, it all crashed down. I saw this snippet from DAV coverage: " In Dragon Age: The Veilguard, the Elven Trickster god of legend Solas wants to tear down the Veil that separates Thedas from the world of demons, restoring his people’s immortality and glory – even at the cost of countless lives. But his ritual goes awry, and his worst fears are realized, as two of his most ancient and powerful adversaries are released. They seek only to finish what they started millennia ago – the complete and utter domination of our world." I 99% sure that's Andruil and Falondin. He talks only about them in Mythal's temple for a reason.

While I do question tears versus the rain happening in that scene, this facial expression and the look in his eyes just SCREAM absolute defeat to me. He feels so defeated right now. Poor guy needs a hug so bad. LET ME HUG HIM, BIOWARE! Yeah, the need to comfort hug is unbearable.

That was my thoughts originally about the last two, although I was always prepared to swap Ghil for Andruil and Elgar'nan for Falon'Din. However, the link between Lusacan and Falon'Din was so hammered home in the codex on their constallation that I'm pretty sure it is him. Now that would make it interesting because Falon'Din is the God of the Dead and what do they have down south in the Grand Necropolis but a ready made army of the dead for him to command. Meanwhile, according to Strife, the Arlathan Forest was originally the domain of Andruil, so she likely has plenty of secrets locked away ready to be revealed there, plus possibly the use of those strange pools from the Horror of Hormack. Now the big problem is that Solas locked them way last time because he didn't know how to defeat them in any other way, so I wonder if he has come up with any better ideas since then. Certainly, I don't think Varric's plan of asking them to play nice is going to work with them.
