I was talking about Jerk Inquistors, as I'd seen one on Youtube, and remembered a Solas thing.
Refusing Solas's personal quest to help the Wisdom Spirit, his reaction is so OOC it's crazy.
He's like, "My friend! they could die! Quiz: "Yeah, so not my priority." "Oh...well, I'll just mark it on the map, and if you feel like bringing us that way, then that would be nice."
UH, WHAT?! That quest should have been like the Ander's gather bomb materials quest, and he goes off to do it anyway. Or says he'll leave to go do it, and then he does, and you still get that scene of him walking back into Skyhold and say, "Didn't think you'd come back."
But mark the place where his friend is being tortured on a map???

(Gently tucks u into bed) Y'all need nap times. I was talking about Jerk Inquistors, as I'd seen one on Youtube, and remembered a Solas thing. Refusing Solas's personal quest to help the Wisdom Spirit, his reaction is so OOC it's crazy. He's like, "My friend! they could die! Quiz: "Yeah, so not my priority." "Oh...well, I'll just mark it on the map, and if you feel like bringing us that way, then that would be nice." UH, WHAT?! That quest should have been like the Ander's gather bomb materials quest, and he goes off to do it anyway. Or says he'll leave to go do it, and then he does, and you still get that scene of him walking back into Skyhold and say, "Didn't think you'd come back." But mark the place where his friend is being tortured on a map??? I think whenever you're given the option to do something and the opt out of it, the game just sort... breaks. Like the expectation on the part of the writers and designers is that you'll do this thing, you'll agree to take on side-quests and companion quests and such. You might not necessarily complete them, but you won't turn them down either. So when you do the game and all the characters in it just sort of go "????? Okay???? Well I'm going to mark it on the map anyway." Same thing goes for romance break-ups, in my opinion. I see a lot of people complain that such and such character doesn't react strongly enough and just sort of lets you go - but those options aren't for people who want to do the romance and explore every last dialogue, it's for people who genuinely don't want to be in the romance anymore. And for those people, they'd probably be considerably soured on a character if said character made any real attempt to keep their interest. It's the same thing here. I consider any dialogue that results from the player turning down content to be, like... some weird alternate universe where everyone's really meek and OOC. It's just the devs trying to steer clear of stepping on the player's toes, because it's a perfunctory option that very few people probably take. If you'd like a headcanon explanation though - maybe Solas has just given up on modern people caring about spirits, so he doesn't bother to argue the point. Or maybe he acknowledges that the Inquisitor's a busy person and that there, frankly, higher priorities than saving a single person. Which is both true, and very easy to forget, since the game goes on about how time is precious and there's always something important to while simultaneously asking you to take the time to personally find some no-name farmer's lost cow.

Still, if the player is RPing a jackass, why not? If you wish to get along with Sera even a little bit, you have to go along with some crazy behavior up front, before you even know her very well. Despite this, Sera still has plenty of fans, and works well if you can get past that early mountain-like RP obstacle. I think they should've made Solas react more in-character for this, as you described. His request is much later in the story, and is just that: a transparent request. If the player chooses to be an ass, Solas should react in-character, with strength and determination. Oh, well. Hopefully they'll write it a bit more boldly next time, if such a situation arises.

But Solas does act in-character. He's not Sera, neither in character or in role, so I'm no sure why you'd expect him to act in any way as 'crazy' as she does. First: many times he is somewhat withdrawn, quiet and observing... because he has to be in order not to bring too much attention to himself. We see that many times, even with things he greatly disapproves, where the only indicator of his distaste or disapproval is actually an approval system. At best he's sighing somewhere silently, like in case of accepting Grey Wardens to Inquisition and only allows himself to let out some of the bitterness or anger in rare moments, like his low approval scene. And don't forget that if Inquisitor chooses to murder all the Sentinels in Temple Of Mythal, Solas actually laments a pointless waste (if he's in the party)... yet still helps Inky eliminate them along the way. Second and more important: what is Solas's first instinctual reaction to basically everything in modern world and expected attitude of members of Inquisition? It's subtle, but not unnoticeable: Solas first and foremost expects rejection, pretty much on every front. He's used to it - he's prepared for it, he has all kinds of defenses against it. It's kindness, friendliness, affection or respect that catch him off guard. I mean, even in case of very friendly Inquisitor you can tell just how careful and uncertain he is about asking for their help - Inky can even express surprise and point out that Solas "doesn't need help from anyone, he's known for that" only to be confronted with a request to help a spirit friend. That's actually a lot to ask for in modern Thedas where majority of people are afraid of spirits; a fact exacerbated by the Breach and demons pouring everywhere and whose Inquisitor is forced to encounter on every step. Not only that, Solas seems surprised - shocked even - if Inquisitor not only chooses to help him, but actually tries to rescue his friend. If he had that reaction to friendly Inquisitor, it's really no surprise that he's not making many attempts to repeatedly or more forcefully ask Inquisitors who had made their feelings on 'demons' clear. All he does is he gives them an opportunity to act. That doesn't mean he's not seething underneath, or perhaps even sends his people thatway, but it seems only Quizzy's direct involvement gives him a chance to rescue his friend, even if briefly.

Nice post. I never would've expected Solas to react in a crazy fashion as Sera does to pretty much anything that doesn't please her; I was just using her as an example of writers choosing to be a bit less careful. I think it might've been a cool opportunity for them to have Solas say, "This is something I must do, even if I must do it alone. I'll return when it is done, one way or the other," and then leave Skyhold. It could've emphasized to the oblivious, obstinate or uncaring just how much this really meant to him. Refusing to help him need not even result in a "Solas Disapproves", if done in a respectful way. Helping could've netted a big "Solas Strongly Approves". This is more or less as it works now, likely. Still, I don't disagree with anything you've said above. It also doesn't come into play in the majority of games, since most gamers will agree to help. It's only the most curious RPers, the most ardent Solas haters, and other similar outliers who would ever say "No", anyway.

Bought Spoils of the Qunari at a discount price... if I'm MIA for a week or so it's probably because I will be gazing at Solas glorious abs... I got those equipment packs when I repurchased the game in the form of the GotY Edition. While I as happy to see Qunari equipment, I can't bring myself to use it on any non-Qunari characters. Its just too out of place. Eventually, I'll play a Qunari Inquisitor and get some use out of it, maybe. I do use the Avvar nuggalope mount, at times. It's interesting starting the game with access to the big fella, long before one might be able or inclined to hand 10K gold to Deraboam. The Avvar armor is both interesting and hideous. I might wear it for the 10 minutes it takes me to slay a generation of nugs, rams and druffaloes. Then, I hit the golden nug and craft the early game version of my "real armor". The golden nug is the best nug.
