As the title says, I opened up steam today and was shown the " news " of the upcoming new Battletech game ! ( was completely in the dark about it ) Tabletop Battletech was not really my thing but I have original copies of almost all Battletech related games. After some heavy breathing I devoured the page and its accompanying developer website and ultimately pre purchased the game. Takes place in the good old days during the Succession Wars , 25 years before the Clan invasions. And the setup of the game reminds of that old school game Mechwarrior 2: Mercenaries. I remember trying to get my hands on all Battletech related lore since Mechwarrior 2. In stead of setting the game in the current Dark Age they are playing it safe ' going back in time ' . I wonder if it will pay off. Maybe it's due to nostalgia that I am hyped about this game like a 12 year old but any other fans here ?

I read a few of the novels related to this setting years ago, but I've never really played any of the games associated with this franchise. That being said, this title does look interesting; if for no other reason that it's take on mech walkers is more "realistic" to me. All that Japanese Mecha out there just seems wildly inefficient and solely based on 'rule of cool'. Why build a two hundred foot tall robot sized assault rifle or sword for your two hundred foot tall robot to hold in its hands when built-in weaponry and modular designs are way more practical? That's right I'll say it: Robotech and Voltron are dumb

Why build a two hundred foot tall robot sized assault rifle or sword for your two hundred foot tall robot to hold in its hands when built-in weaponry and modular designs are way more practical? I agree that it's not particularly realistic, though this approach is also modular by its very nature. The mech only has to grasp a new weapon in order to be able to use it, there's no need to disconnect and reconnect anything. Though, one likely issue with up-scaled infantry weapons is going to be the structural integrity of the weapons, as they will likely break apart under their own weight. (unless you invent new super-alloys or something) Eh, I like to view my mechs more as walking tanks and less like giant robot ninjas/samurai. Now an exo-suit, that makes more sense to give them articulated hands and scaled up weapons since its essentially a high-tech set of knight's armor. But when your mech is large enough to hold a whole team of color coordinated teenagers in it's codpiece thats when giant weapons become asinine.

That's right I'll say it: Robotech and Voltron are dumb I seem to recall when a friend tried to teach me the tabletop game, that ammo explosions on internal weapons are a Very Bad Thing Sure, but if you're damaged enough for that particular problem to be an issue then whether you have built-in weaponry or giant-sized guns to hold isn't really going to matter. Internalized ammo stores are going to be hardened against attacks, those (comparatively) flimsy arms and hands your mech is using to hold that giant samurai sword? Not so much. Any hit damaging enough to ignite your armored compartment of ammo is going to be more than capable of ripping your robot's arm off. Indeed, the damage it would take to incapacitate your mech's gun arm would be well below what it would take to penetrate the shell of something as vital as ammo storage. Sorry, I'm just a wee bit biased against the Japanese mecha designs. My five year old self might have thought the Power Rangers were cool, but once I grew out of such childish idiocy I saw the major flaws in such designs

According to that article, CASE was not available to the Inner Sphere until 3036

According to that article, CASE was not available to the Inner Sphere until 3036 Touché 3025 is during the Succession Wars but I suppose any long period of war accompanied with technological stagnation can be considered a dark age. On the safe side I always outfit my mechs with energy weapons.

Yeah, bipedal mechs aren't particularly realistic. If I had to design one I would give it at the very least four legs, possibly six. This way it's not going to come crushing down if you manage to disrupt one of its legs somehow. Not to mention they wouldn't suffer the stability problems we saw in some of the Battletech gameplay videos. Spider-walkers FTW

I am so, fucking, excited for this game! I admit, i've been burying my head in the sand when it comes to news and gameplay and story. But I feel in love with the universe after Mechwarrior 4: Mercs. And...I want more. So this game got my backing for a digital copy when released. And...yea. I'm ready to play it now, then tack on all the available DLC when it releases. Aw heck, if there is an arena mode, I want to start up a Go Fund Me and/or a kickstarter campaign to commision George Ledoux. Get some duncan fisher lines in there. Canonically correct or not.

I got this along with a free game; Shadowrun Returns, at GOG. Pillars Of Eternity II is also plus a free game; Wasteland 2. Didn't get that since I watched POE gameplay; wasn't taken with it, so I'm going to see how POE II will turn out.

Wasteland 2 was surprisingly fun. Much like the old Fallout games.

Eh... I looked at the reviews on Steam, things aren't looking very good. People are complaining about crashes, lack of ultra-wide support (which I don't really care about), and various other issues which I think most are graphical in nature. I think I might wait for a bit before buying this, I guess we'll see in a few days. Seems a bit of a shame honestly, I was looking forward to buying it, I was happy to support the studio after their work on SR. Edit: seems like the score is stabilizing, maybe this was mostly a false alarm. I think I might get it anyway. Well, so far I haven’t had any technical issues except for not being able to connect to the servers (which you don’t need for the campaign so I don’t care) I feel like I’ve only scratched the surface of the campaign, but so far I’m quite enjoying it.
