Like what MA said, not a lot of basements in TX. Lived in West Texas ... so not a lot of hurricanes, but a few tornados ... and really, just no where to go. FL because swampy, for TX ... at least where I lived ... it's the water table. It was fairly dry where I lived, but the water table is pretty darn close to the surface, so a basement (unless you went through some fairly extreme construction efforts) would not work.
I've only been through one hurricane ... in NoVa, several years ago. Mild in comparison to what DR is facing. My power came back on a bit over two days after the storm passed, but folks on my running route, who were on a different section of the powergrid dealt with lack of power for 10 days to 2 weeks. DR has a generator, that helps a lot.
It's been several years since FL has been hit by a big storm ... when you get hit nearly every hurricane season, folks stay proficient and realistic about what is going to happen. My fear is that with the years since the last big one, that some won't take the warnings of the state authorities and NOAA seriously. By and large, that will be where injuries and deaths will spike. Of course, even those who take it seriously, if the storm is bad enough, sheltering in place won't work.
I grew up in NE and have lived through a set of tornados that devastated major portions of the city ... mother nature can totally overwhelm all but the toughest shelters. A couple of blocks from my house, a lady who lived in a stone house (not to be confused with a stone or brick façade on a frame house), a block from her, the laundromat was leveled. Her house mostly survived, but her water heater was knocked off its base and fell on her ... she drowned in her basement.
My hopes and prayers are for folks along the east coast and certainly FL, take steps to protect yourselves, listen to the authorities and evacuate from the most vulnerable places.
May God protect and keep you and your family, TML.
Yeah, yeah MA, I know ... just give me this one.

Be safe and be smart! Of course, I am the reckless fool that decided to get married in Florida on the beach, on Saturday. Fortunately, we are on the Gulf side, near Destin, so we hopefully will avoid the storm for the most part. We shall see. The Bahamas got smashed pretty bad

I'm in upstate South Carolina so i'm just outta reach of the serious effects of the hurricane.
God speed to those who are closer to the coast. 4 of my online buddies are currently evacuating in Georgia.

I know well over two dozen Guard and Air Force guys along the Space Coast who are on duty, having to actively patrol the area or be on standby for the recovery efforts tomorrow.
Most of them are getting moved around Melbourne and Daytona, so they'll at least be in the larger cities. Some poor fuckers have to stay on duty at CCAFS. I don't think anyone envies them.
Still... would be one hell of a job working for the Hurricane Hunters. Flying into and out of the storm constantly. Hell of a way to get your kicks, and I'd do it in a second.

We now have some pretty steady rain and wind, with more significant gusts here and there. Definitely tropical storm level right now. Having coffee and bacon at the moment, hugging and kissing my electricity while it is still here.
Still expecting noon to be the start of whatever pandemonium the storm has planned for our particular area.
An acquaintance from The Walking Dead forum who lives around central Florida reported her events last night. Got gusts up to 75 mph (which is not bad - gusts are fine, sustained is what hurts). Most everything else sounded fine. She lost power around 6:00am this morning and that's the last we've heard.
That makes me feel largely better because her report is in-line with some Category 2's I've been through, which are unsettling but not terrifying. Matthew shifted more eastward and weakened to a Category 3 last night, so both of those points are fantastic news. As long as he keeps hugging the coastline and doesn't actually slam his eyewall into any of us (which is what technically becomes a hurricane "landfall"), we will all be relatively okay. Powerless for a while, most likely, but you wouldn't see neighborhoods devastated with roofs torn off (barring any tornadoes he may spawn, which is always a possibility).

Florida is too flat and marshy to dig a shelter into. It'd end up flooding anyway. Your first big one in like 15 years, right OP? Yes, it is.

We are safe, the pets are fine, sounds like my friends and family are all okay. The house is fine. My Charger faced a close damn call with a maple tree, but is fine (trunk might be scratched or dented but, thankfully, the tree collapsed behind it rather than on it). Downtown St. Augustine is BAD, but our house has no flooding. Got the generator up and working. All is relatively well here, all things considered.

Thus far, 4 lost souls in Florida, along with hundreds of Haitians.
Two have died directly from the storm, two from health complications and the inability of first-responders to safely reach them in time. While regrettable, the death toll could have been much higher, but fortunately, many residents seemed to have heeded the warnings from every level of the government to evacuate.
As always, if you're in the path of the storm, don't be stupid, get out. Leave. Save yourself.
