You apparently can have romance in sci-fi & in fantasy but in science fantasy everyone gets neutered at birth.

I wonder if they decided to try and get those fucking worthless bottom feeder hardcore gamer anti-SJW trolls who can't stand straight romance much less homosexual romance without getting their underwear in a bunch to play a game that they will hate regardless.

BioWare actually mentioned this deliberately when Anthem was first announced if I remember correctly. Mass Effect 3 jumped head first into Sci-Fantasy and ME2 tested the waters beforehand. Buts that's really totally beside the point.

That sounds good to me. My guess, assuming a reasonable success threshold, we'll see some acknowledged romances...probably more of a tacit thing than full on sexy time.

Deep friendships lol. More like they want to woo people who think murdering people in games is fab but characters expressing feelings is icky. The lack of romances is a pretty huge red flag for me when it comes to rpgs as it’s a fundamental human element which you’d want in rpg character building. Romance is a integral part of the human experience, what we get in RPGs isn't. I chat a lady up at the bar more in 5 minutes than all the conversations you have with a love interest in a bioware game. Doing something as shallow as they do in the bioware games is such a poor reflection of that human element its not worth doing, just have a click x for porn button and be done with it, it has the same depth as any of these relationships.

Most things in games are a poor reflection/condensed version of their actual real life equivalent that doesn’t mean they shouldn’t be there. Romances as they exist have the core elements of attraction, flirting and consummation and are a factor to making the game feel like it’s got some degree connection to the human experience. Utter nonsense to suggest Romances are a click here for porn button.

As a Destiny regular, I'm having difficulty seeing where Anthem overlaps in terms of appearance. The more I learn about the game, the less like Destiny it really seems.

I guess if you assume the only interactions the characters ever have are the ones the writers explicitly include, then yeah. There are a lot of things that happen off-camera, including some that are specifically implied (often via fade-outs). We know our characters eat, sleep, shower, and have other basic biological functions though we don't see them doing any of these things. I take what is presented in-game as highlights, the bare minimum key story points needed to make the story work.

And besides under that logic you don't need any romance scenes you can head canon all of it.

I actually prefer fade-to-black and/or leaving some things ambiguous. But since actual dialogue with NPCs is a big part of a BioWare game, opportunities to flirt/express interest - and have it returned/acknowledged - are something I welcome.

So... like Josephine or Suvi? Or not even that far? I mean, by that account Bastila works too, I mean I don't NEED a "sex" scene in order to be invested in a romantic relationship. There is such a thing as emotional intimacy, which I'm pretty sure is what is actually meant when people are talking about "Bioware Romances." Also; is there any word on the game's age rating? That might have something to do with it.

Jumping back from the EA Play thread where a discussion of FPP vs TPP has been going on. It seems as though we will be automatically in FPP in Tarsis and cutscenes are likely not in TPP. This could be a reason for not including romance because sexy times in first person perspective will probably be really offputting. At least for me.

I do agree that non-explicit romances can be great. IIRC, Valen Shadowbreath's romance was pretty tame (and of course not animated) but it was great. Bio may also be trying to get into markets that are more conservative when it comes to nudity/sex.

I would say most romance in most movies, TV shows, plays, comics, and novels are presented poorly.

I imagine most folks would be satisfied enough if a couple of NPC’s are receptive to flirting, even if it only just ends in playful banter.

Not a deal breaker, since the gameplay looks beautiful and fun (from what we've seen so far). Mark or Casey did say that you can build friendships, so having that part of the story is good for me. They still might add romance options later, in DLCs or patches, if a lot of people really want it? Who knows. I pre-ordered already and can't wait to play!
