That does look like a textbook definition of overreacting. How? Please enlighten me, oh wise bshep. I am not the one calling a character a psycopath because of a 5 seconds line from him, neither i am the one being snarky because of it. That is all you.

Well sorry I dare say that I don't like a character. Last I checked this thread isn't just for people who praise everything about the character. And of course I'm going to be snarky when people are telling me I'm overreacting and don't know what I'm talking about, as if they are in a position to know better, or be told to not play the game then.

Just watching that interaction in the 20 minute video. His personality is very aggravating, between how he talks as well as things like him being excited that a caravan of people was wiped out because that will make this job more fun. Why do I have a psychopath as part of my crew? Oh right, because we are forced to have a relationship with him. Understandable if he does indeed end up that way. Still there's a long time till launch and the context is yet to be explained, he might still win you over. Thank you for actually responding civilly. And sure, he might win me over. I would welcome nothing more than to be proven wrong about him.

My fan fiction for now is that they are cheerful because they've had some bad luck in the past and with a new kid on the helm they are kinf of eager to prove to Tarsis that they are a dependable, kickass Freelancer team. No more fukups. Of course it doesn't rhyme to well with the level 30 but it is my fan fiction so there's that.

People don't just use laughter when they're supposed to be all happy, with no care in the world. For millennia now we've used humor to deal with crappy life situations and from all we know life in the world of Anthem is pretty darn challenging. All people are asking is not to make sweeping judgments about a character based on scraps of information.

Thus far the characters are talking about caravans "hit" by Scars, not "destroyed." We don't yet know how much damage was done to said caravans, so Haluk is probably more like; "Oooo, challenging fight! More fun! MORE MONEY!" Not necessarily "People died and I'm laughing about it."

So just because I see a character's action as disturbing and not a fun character quirk I should just shut up and not say anything. In that case nobody who likes him should say anything about their opinions either since that is also making "sweeping judgements based on scraps of information", but you have no problem with them voicing theirs I'm sure. Thus far the characters are talking about caravans "hit" by Scars, not "destroyed." We don't yet know how much damage was done to said caravans, so Haluk is probably more like; "Oooo, challenging fight! More fun! MORE MONEY!" Not necessarily "People died and I'm laughing about it." No, when he talks to you a few moments later he talks about how they used a kind of acid to "melt a couple supply caravans". That's saying they were destroyed, especially with how dangerous the world of Anthem is where even if not killed by the Scars, either in the attack or later on as we see displayed bodies, then by nature since they are exposed and humans are the bottom of the food chain. So yes, it is at least partially the latter.

Thus far we have no age rating so we don't know how intense this sort of thing is going to be plot-wise. Context is important. Context we don't have. I get the feeling we're going to have to agree to disagree on this in order to stay civil.

In that case nobody who likes him should say anything about their opinions either since that is also making "sweeping judgements based on scraps of information", but you have no problem with them voicing theirs I'm sure. People don't have issues with you seeing something as disturbing - what people have an issue with is the hyperbole. You see a scene you don't like - you call a character a psychopath. People point out that you're overreacting based on very little - you interpret it as them saying that you need to shut up and not say anything when nobody said that. Some of us are aware that you have very exacting moral standards for characters, but there's a difference between saying something like "I don't think I like the characterization of Haluk in this scene, he seems too jolly; it doesn't bode well for me liking the character" and outright deeming someone a psychopath. That's a loaded charge and the sweepiest of judgments anybody has made about the character on what is currently a 2-page thread. Relax, it's just too early to grow so vitriolic either towards the NPC or folks you deem as 'liking him' even if all they said is that they don't agree with you making a super-extreme judgment about a character we simply don't yet know that much about, which is a completely different thing than making a 'sweeping judgement'.

I get the feeling we're going to have to agree to disagree on this in order to stay civil. Eh, we already know that world of Anthem is super-dangerous so I expect for stuff to be gruesome and casualties to be high, even if it's suggested rather than explicitly shown. The devs have outright stated that being outside of Javelin/Strider/Fort basically means death, so regardless whether folks in the caravan were left alone or not, melting a caravan likely means they're dead anyway - either melted or eaten or whatevs. But in this situation, I am entirely not surprised that some people prefer to cope with their harsh lives through humor or bravado. Humor, and especially gallows humor, has been a known coping mechanism since forever. Nevermind that such a tough world would produce tough cookies who are way less mushy than XXI century Earthlings from 1st world countries... for them stuff like that would be a regular occurrence. Anyway... if I were to make a bet about Haluk's characterization, I'd say that he may be a 'squadron dad' who on his own may be a jovial guy, but who additionally puts a brave, loud, laughing face in order to motivate his crew which is otherwise almost constantly in danger, especially Freelancers sent 'out there'. And I'd say that the crew is probably aware of his schtick, but tolerates it either way because they know what it's there for - Faye knowingly gazing a PC and rolling her eyes appears to be an indicator of that.

Am I the only one who noticed that Haluk feels a lot like Maui from Moana? I mean, aside from his big frame and the fact that he's covered in tattoos, he also seems to have this devilish comical personality similar to Maui. I also think he also shares a similar backstory to Maui, in which he was a great hero (a Freelancer) before something happened to him and he retired himself.

If I recall correctly (Excuse me if I'm mixing you up for someone else, or misremembering) I believe you had similar concerns for Drack when we were first learning about him? Now, while this is a perfectly valid reason to be turned off from a character, Perhaps in the full game you'll be pleasantly surprised? A character can be a 'Blood Knight', or have 'Blood Knight' tendencies but still be a good person.

A character can be a 'Blood Knight', or have 'Blood Knight' tendencies but still be a good person. You are remembering correctly. I can't recall if I used similar terminology when referring to Drack, but yeah I definitely had similar concerns about him. Some of which did turn out to be valid. As I said earlier in this thread, I would love nothing more than to be proven wrong about Haluk since that means one more character I like or at least can tolerate.

Damn, I hadn't realized that Haluk was in last year's E3 trailer until William from 'Your Anthem' called him out. Good spot.
