Since we were not given any indication regarding the deities associated to each Vallaslin, I chose based on looks alone.
Turned out I gave him Mythal's Vallaslin lolol

When I first came into the game, I chose it based on aesthetics alone. Ended up with Sylaises's eye vallaslin. But afterward, when I started becoming more acquainted with DA lore, I picked them based off what my character wanted to dedicate themselves to in the clan.
If my character was a clan hunter who wanted to do thier best to provide for thier family? Andruil's vallaslin. If my character was a clan member who always wanted to remember and respect the dead? They would wear the vallaslin of Falon'Din. If my character was a mage who contributed to the clan by healing and providing domestic crafts? Sylaise

Andruil's, because Dalish non-mage PCs are hunters after all. It also looks nice. Funny thing is, while my Warden uses basic version of this tattoo, the Inquisitor has complex version on his face. Origin's complex version of this vallaslin is just horrible.

Wow I just learned something new. Been using the dirthamen one for dai playthrough. Was this figured out through process of elimination?

Wow I just learned something new. Been using the dirthamen one for dai playthrough. Was this figured out through process of elimination? No, before the release of DAI, fans were wondering about their significance on the old forum. Someone went to Twitter and asked Matt Something (sorry his name escapes me) a artists working on DA if he could enlighten us. He kindly made a picture with the vallaslins with the name of the gods associated to them.
I choose Mythal vallaslin. I saw one trailer with Abelas, and I really liked the tree tatoos. Then I learned it was the one belonging to Mythal. And my pc having anger issue and mommy issue (/cackle) I thought he'd go for Mythal, as she is a goddess of motherhood, and was able to calm Elgar'nan down. Also she is a protector. There's other gods I could have picked. Elgar'nan, Andruil... But Yeah Mythal vallaslin were the prettiest and I loved the dramatic reason I made up.

Partly aesthetics but then justified it with their role in the clan.
With Envavir Lavellan, whilst he is a hunter, he is also a scout and a protector of the clan, so he opted for the vallaslin of Mythal.
With Atisha Lavellan, her name reflects her nature of a peacemaker. She was the mage child of city elves who was adopted by the clan at her parents' request to keep her out of the Circle, so was allowed to choose her own clan name. As Sylaise is credited with being the patron of the "Way of Peace", she took her vallaslin.

I used whatever I thought the character needed. Wasn't aware they were assigned to a particular god.

Before they revealed what god/goddess they corresponded with I just went with the one I thought looked prettiest
and once they did, well...I just made a head canon around why she picked the one she had my Lavellan had June's vallaslin < this one I just head cannoned it as her wanting to 'make a new peaceful world' June = crafter, craft = make
I was actually glad that I picked the vallaslin of the God we hardly know anything about, then I can at least keep up my hope not all of the gods were evil like Solas/Fen'harel and Flemeth/Mythal want us to believe (because I bloody refuse that they were all evil damnit!)

Looks, affinity with that god, roleplay reasons, etc. All of the above My canon Lavellan is a healer who tries to follow Vir Atish'an, "The Way of Peace" - so originally I was set on using Sylaise's vallaslin, but I didn't like the look of either of them. So I went with my second choice for her, Dirthamen's. As the Keeper's First, it was her place to learn and remember the knowledge & legends of the clan. She's also the type to want to learn as much about something as she can, so it fit her. Plus her older brother had Falon'Din's vallaslin, so there was that connection too. That being said, if a certain mod has been updated by the time I get to playing Inquisition on the PC, I'll probably go back to Sylaise's - since I still think it fits her best symbolism/meaning-wise, and I love the looks of the one in the mod. Image I made for myself to help remember which Vallaslin went to which god in both games:

But it's one of those designs that changed completely in DAI, so we can only guess which one it was.

I'm not sure that really works for him, or any of the PCs in Inquisition. Even if we're wearing all-crafted gear, it's not like the PC crafts it themself. (Or, on second thought, maybe a Tempest or an Artificer makes their own specialization-specific gear?) If we'd gotten some indication which design goes with which god, I'd probably have gone with either Dirthamen or Falon'Din, since my only elf so far has been a necromancer.

I often use Sylaise for my mages, because she is connected with healing magic. And although you can't be a healer, I headcannon, that my mages can heal and the healing mist grenades are spells.
I like using June too for my more artistic characters ( my rogues aren't hunters, but apprentices to the storyteller. I hate hunting and none of my characters will be hunters, so I ignore the introduction and create my own background). And Mythal, because ... Mythal

Since the Dalish character is sent to the summit or whatever as a spy, I think I ended up picking the one for the hunter god or whoever.
Or, actually... does Fen'Harel have a vaseline? I might have picked that one.
Either way, I try to go with a thematic motif that informs my understanding of the character I'm making.

Or, actually... does Fen'Harel have a vaseline? I might have picked that one. Not that we ever learned, and he probably never did. He objects to the vallaslin markings and the system they represented in his time. And even if he had a pattern, the Dalish almost certainly wouldn't use it given that their mythology treats him more less like a god and more like a Satan. Mind you I'm not ruling out the possibility that he owned slaves at one point, had a vallaslin pattern for them, and is currently ashamed of that. But even if he did, that vallaslin isn't one of the options available.

Bruce Lavellan:Sylaise - simple version Reason: "It is Sylaise who showed us how to heal with herbs and with magic, and how to ease the passage of infants into this world. " Bruce wants to help people and is a Rift Mage, so it seemed appropriate to give him the Vallaslin of the Hearthkeeper. Kiri Lavellan:Ghilan'nain Reason: She romanced Solas and I knew I wanted her to get her Vallaslin removed, so I chose one that is discreet, but still pretty. Kitty Lavellan:Falon'Din - complex version Reason: Honestly, it was just the one that suited her face the most Namaki Lavellan:Andruil - complex version Reason: She's an archer, (will take the Artificer spec) and will romance Sera. Also she's not subtle
