Mine were almost always whatever felt like the right response but definitely more towards emotional/casual.

I'm inclined to agree.
I think the majority of the dialogue is better-written then it gets credit for, and I think for the first major project of the so-called "B-studio" back then they don't get the credit they deserve.

But sometimes it's like the "Sarcastic" option in Fallout 4, where unless you've played it a dozen times, you don't know if you're going to engage in witty banter, lament the situation, or insult their mother.
