I embraced the scientist-enthusiast background for Sara, and used Logical/Casual exclusively. There is no way to avoid humor entirely, so I chose my canon Ryder to be a jocular type. Still, if both options are present, she will use the Logical option.
Revisiting the game after a while, I have changed my approach. While it's not a perfect departure from the forced tone, I decided to embrace all of the feelings instead. My young diplomat is more of a "paragon" than a joker, so she is actually Emotional/Professional. The Emotional choice is her primary tone overall.
...happy resurrection!

the right response is always hard to guess for me as what he says is so frequently different than what is written, so far off frequently it has a totally different meaning. I really hate the sum up method of choices.

I really hate the sum up method of choices. I'm inclined to agree. I think the majority of the dialogue is better-written then it gets credit for, and I think for the first major project of the so-called "B-studio" back then they don't get the credit they deserve. But sometimes it's like the "Sarcastic" option in Fallout 4, where unless you've played it a dozen times, you don't know if you're going to engage in witty banter, lament the situation, or insult their mother.

Emotional/casual. If I had to guess, that's how Ryder was written to be. The lack of anything truly resembling a Renegade choice tells the story. I liked Ryder for who s/he was. Didn't need to be Shep.
