Since "who's your favorite" gets asked often enough, I thought I'd see what the runner-up list looks like. If your favorite LI in the series was MIA, who'd be your favorite..? I'm interested to see how/if this differs from the usual polls.

Man, that is a much tougher question than 'who's your favourite?' for me! I ultimately chose Alistair, because I have played his romance more than once and might do it again. (The other second-favourite candidates were Zevran and Blackwall, and honestly Sera should probably be on there, too.)

Fenris for me.
My third is headcanon only... Nathaniel. I ship him with my Orlesian Warden. >.> And omg I learned he was also written by David Gaider. Idk what I will do without him writing these games. Who will give me heart-wrenching angst and wry humor?!

It is a near run thing with my favourite romances but on reflection I think that Zevran is my favourite, closely followed by Dorian and then Fenris.

Marriage is a compromise ... I like my hair long and my wife likes her hair short. So I cut my hair short, and she leaves her hair long ...

It's easy to say Sera is my favorite but after that, things get murkier. Fenris for me. My third is headcanon only... Nathaniel. I ship him with my Orlesian Warden. >.> And omg I learned he was also written by David Gaider. Idk what I will do without him writing these games. Who will give me heart-wrenching angst and wry humor?! Ooh, all the what-could-have-beens in Awakening, they break my heart. I shipped my Brosca with Sigrun. Don't worry, though. Even with Gaider gone, I think you'll still get your angst and wry humor fix!

Cullen, after Alistair's. That romance just hits all the right beats for me, and I love that it lets my Inquisitor marry him in Trespasser.

After much deliberation, I decided to go with Fenris. I really like the dynamics of interracial (or rather... interspecies?) and cross-class relationships in Thedas. And by cross-class I mean in the fictional sense (mages vs. mundanes) and the classism sense. Pairing Fenris with Hawke explores all of that, what with him being an elf, a runaway slave, squatting in a mansion... Hawke being a human mage (or someone with a mage sister/father/cousin) who becomes a wealthy nobleman, who takes back their ancestral estate is such a cool contrast to me. I like Fenris's dry sense of humor, his intelligence, his connection to Tevinter and Seheron. I find the angst and vulnerability and devotion and healing that make up his romance really moving. Isabela's right behind him though, and Zevran, Morrigan...

Interesting point, and it's actually addressed in one dialogue as opposed to being left to subtext or player headcanon.

It's funny, I answered this question like half an hour ago and it's already changing... damn you, Isabela! Interesting point, and it's actually addressed in one dialogue as opposed to being left to subtext or player headcanon. Yep, I love that it's actually something they discuss, however briefly. And time and again other people reference Fenris's lower social status (his living situation, being called a manservant, "I shall endeavor to exist with less offense", etc.) Actually, I think it's very interesting that the class difference is addressed with almost every LI. Not gonna comment on Sebastian as I don't know much about his romance, but Merrill's skeptical "and you, with an elf... in Hightown?" when you ask her to move in with you plus her comment to a male Hawke about being shunned for having human kids, Isabela calling Hawke a Champion and herself a "lying, thieving snake" and insisting that you have nothing in common anymore, Anders' comments when he moves in about Hawke being proud to be with a mage... the game did a pretty good job acknowledging it.

Merrill's skeptical "and you, with an elf... in Hightown?" when you ask her to move in with you plus her comment to a male Hawke about being shunned for having human kids This is one of those character development things that I think should have existed outside the romance. When you offer to help Feynriel in Act 2, she derisively calls him a "halfbreed." It's not a good look. But if you don't romance her you don't see that, I suppose, her view has changed.

Not yet sure about those 2 lol Blackwall is a favorite for the voice actor's punch though I will say Cullen has superior animation and content. Bull would be a second favorite for being able to fit a variety of Inquisitor personalities. How well does Dorian's romance go for roleplay potential?

His pride do keep him from saying exactly how he feels toward the inquisitor but he does when it counts and honest about it. He cares greatly and always misunderstood (for a Tevinter) so being the underdog is also appealing. His facial expression/animation shows tenderness, desire and longing. Just his romance quest alone say that he has been searching for more and the inquisitor finally offered it to his surprise. I actually had the hardest time with Bull until he started showing that there's more to him than just physical pleasure and detachment.

I never played the previous DA. I'm curious as to what people find so fascinating about him? He ranks #1. His voice, his lovely face, his entrance is incredible. His line: I am yours I like that Hawke can talk with him and learn about Seheron, fog warriors, Tevinter. His dialog tree seems deeper and longer. I like that he slowly becomes friends with Aveline, Donnic, Sebastian, Varric. He sucks at wicket grace. He has a really good sense of humor, sometimes dry. Love the dance humor. And I get the feeling that if you gain his respect he will be loyal for life. He has respect for people they need to earn it. He has strong opinions but willing to change as when he meets Bethany. Anders I think he is a bit jealous and also fearful of Anders magic and Justice given his time in Tevinter but I think with time he would become if not close at least friends. Merril on the other hand I don't think he would ever become friends with her blood magic, he see her as irresponsible and maybe too much like the Tevinter magisters. This all makes him seem so fleshed out - it's nice. Ah I forgot his puppy eyes and glowing fist and that he will kill for Hawke and all hawke has to do is ask And in Kirkwall its a neat skill to have. Oh and I like that he is not perfect and has failings. I watched his romance quest on Youtube but it didn't say as much as you described so nice! Some of what you said is how I feel about Dorian's character. His looks and gestures show a lot of longing and tenderness. His pride and superficiality are a ruse and he does accept his imperfection with grace and a little prodding, lol. I really liked seeing Dorian happy for a change since he had such a hard time for being gay. Off the subject, I'm romancing Sera with my female inquisitor. I have a little gripe about the Dorian-meet-father quest where Dorian explains that he likes the company of men, meaning sex. My female inquisitor didn't get the option to respond, "I've done more than just heard." (something like that) but my male inquisitor do. Boo. She's not ashamed to say what she knows.

How well does Dorian's romance go for roleplay potential? Whether someone likes a thing, or not, is subjective. However, I can say that Dorian's romance is objectively good for roleplay. The various dialogues have different paths so you can match to your headcanon; this happens with all of Dorian's quests. For the romance specifically, you can initiate the first kiss, or he can; you can talk to him about the amulet (romance quest), or surprise him with it; you can have a sex scene, or not (take it slow), and both of these are full options (that is, the non-sex version isn't lacking, it's just different). Outside of the character himself, this aspect is one of my favorite things about the romance. Someone else with a different headcanon can have a completely different romance flavor from mine and actually play that out in the game because you have those different options. And because this would matter to some, despite what some people think and stereotypes they have, the game does not specify top/bottom, as it does with Bull's romance, so you can headcanon that as well. It's an excellent romance for roleplay.
