I am in quite a conundrum when it comes to party composition for DA 4 and how many there are in any given game. On the one hand, as others have mentioned, I think I would prefer a smaller more balanced more fleshed out cast of chracters. But on the other hand my two favorite games in BioWare's library, as well as two of my favorite games of all time...were the games with the larger casts and while the games that have smaller casts generally seem to have more mixed or weaker casts. Inquisition is especially noteworthy in this regard because, like them or not, I do find pretty much all 9 of the companions 'well written', I've even gotten a new appreciation of Blackwall in my last PT. Whereas a game like ME 1 or ME 3 had several characters I actively disliked for writing and personal reasons.
To the matter at hand though I'm not sure I would spring for this idea. The only utlity I think this might have is if they made it a lot easier to piss off your companions or to get them killed throughout the game and then you could hire 'replacements', you lose out on the companion content since these mercenaries aren't fully fleshed out, you lose out on maybe a significant amount of money to hire competent replacements...but one issue I had with DA I specifically is I liked not taking out the same companion every single time because I figured it would weaar them out, but I didn't recruit Vivi during a pT of DA I, then Solas dissapeared...so I was stuck having to drag out Dorian throughout all of Jaws then all of Descent then all of Tresspasser.
Whatever the companion content is though and whatever its makeup I just want a party that is big enough to have interesting fully fleshed out characters like DA I but also have a fully fleshed out and interesting protagonist like DA 2 or MEA.

I haven't played PoE. The sidekicks sound like companions without full development (Shale, mabari), or even worse, just some random guys generated in game. The 'nine-companion-and-three-advisor-cast' in DAI is almost perfect for me. And such number is crucial for the replayability.

I don't know, Shale and the dog had to be two of my favorite companions in Origins. I get that they weren't the most fleshed out of all the companion characters dialogue-wise but they were the most unique; not only in terms of appearance but also in terms of abilities, equipment and non-human(-like) natures. Personally I would prefer to have more unique diversity in the player/controllable NPC cast than more talking heads. Leliania, Joshapeine, and Cullen weren't bad characters per say, but I can't help but feel a lot of what they did could have been combined into a single entity, thereby freeing up more resources to give us some more unique options.

Frankly, there were too many companions in DAI. No more than 7 able to be recruited, though at least two of every class with the remaining one being whatever.
Though limiting to 7 for a certain play-through, you COULD potentially have more available than that, but some won't offer to join you unless you've sided with a certain faction, maybe make that one the 7th/wildcard/odd-one-out.
