I don't use reddit, but the author is having a reddit AMA at the moment here: https://www.reddit.com/r/masseffect/comments/9vcbf7/i_am_catherynne_m_valente_author_of_mass_effect/ If someone could ask about the raloi confusion (whether the raloi info was an accidental mistake or if the asari knew of them 200 years before the raloi reached space the first time) then I'd be eternally grateful. I asked but I'm not sure she'll answer. You're a legend for asking!

I really want to see and read more about the Elcor and Hanar. They deserve their time in the spotlight now. The Turians, Asari and Krogan can all take a backseat.
I find these two Milky Way races even more compelling that what we encountered in Andromeda to be honest.

I think you would really like the book then, if you don't like reading the audio book, done by Scott Ryder himself, is amazing!

I'm not really satisfied with her answer https://www.reddit.com/r/masseffect/comments/9vcbf7/i_am_catherynne_m_valente_author_of_mass_effect/e9bbd1c It's not the worst answer, but yeah, it would've been nice to have more details. I think that it gives me enough info to know I need to move the raloi homeworld from where I put it in my mod. It does make me wonder about the other unseen races, if she ever considered those, like the lystheni and virtual aliens.

And if … an ancient but sophisticated VI originally developed by one of the Quarian progenitors of the Geth can travel with one of the Quarians … why can't the Geth?

Just remembered another lore mistake She talks about there being some Ardat-Yakshi virus in the superbug. Ardat-Yakshi is a genetic disorder, not a virus. I think she may have found it on this page masseffect.wikia.com/wiki/Diseases and presumed they were all contractable.

It's possible, but perhaps her idea was the genetic data was added to the virus and would've overwritten asari DNA to give them the disorder. Kind of like how they are trialing virus' in the real world to treat cystic fibrosis, by overwriting the problem DNA.

Shit. I believe I found at least 20 fatal lore contradictions (probably around 30), and I can list around 10 off the top of my head. The book is boring until the end of Chapter 8., though it redeems itself partially in Part 2.
Considering the amount of lore errors and self-contradictions (is Iris Non finally a monotheist or a polytheist?), I don't have any hope for Mass Effect as long as Mac Walters or anyone responsible for releasing this thing without a review has something to say. This book is almost as bad as Deception and I don't foresee treating it as a canon source.

OK burningcherry, how about this ... behind a spoiler, list the 10 "fatal" lore contradictions off the top of your head. Then later, add a second spoiler with the additional 10 or 20 "fatal" lore contradictions. Or just list the first 10. Also, define a "fatal" lore contradiction, versus minor, significant or major lore contradiction. I'm curious, but also a bit skeptical. I'm fine with you showing me that my skepticism is unwarranted.

Can someone tell me the deal with the timeline? I won't read the book yet.
Did they get the Nexus signal but miss it, and will need another 30 years to get to Andromeda? So like, we'd probably not see them until another 30 years in the timeline (or a MEA2 that takes place decades in future aka Ryder middle aged)?
I'm just confused is all.

SwobyJThey are on their way to the Nexus but everything malfunctions before they arrive, they are 30 years out.
They are slightly ahead of schedule so the Nexus will not have even arrived in Andromeda at this point.
They send a message to the Nexus, who knows how long it took to get there, which we hear in the game. We do not, however, respond.
The book ends with a transmission coming in but it does not say who it was from, perhaps it's the same message the Hyperion received in transit from the milky way.

"Fatal": indefensible, non-explainable contradiction. Like batarian embassy on the Citadel in 2186 or Miranda's biotics. There's no "minor" or "insignificant". All contradiction are fatal by definition, just a figure of speech. From what I could remember, though after thinking for a while, maybe some of those can be defended with enough lore stretching: – crowds of refugees coming from attacks on Noveria and Virmire – even though both of them were uninhabited – quarians waiting for the geth to "abandon" their homeworld – no quarian we see ever said that they anticipate anything like that. That "most of them" never saw Rannoch on their eyes is technically true, "everyone" includes "most". – quarians described as "bird-like", like why – humans not caring about space at all as an insignificant minority. First counter-example: the protesters Cora meets in the first chapter of Initiation, seeming to be a common sight. – Blasto 8 being the favourite movie of the drell Sleepwalker: There wasn't even Blasto 7 at the point they departed... – ...and so weren't Arc Pistols, they were only created based on Rael'Zorah's experiments. – the drell living poor underdog lives on Kahje, contrary to what the Codex says about them – only one city on Kahje being able to support drell lives. I don't know what the description of Kahje on the Wiki is based on, but it clearly says "domed cities", in plural. – krogans being inflicted with the Genophage "decades" ago. Well, technically true, 200 decades ago. But that's not what was indented to be said. – mirroring surfaces described as a more human than quarian trait of ship desing, contrary to what was said in Initiation – a grandmother of a quarian on the Arc dying on Rannoch during the geth uprising – quarians don't live that much – weapons being fed using ammunition not blocks for ammunition to be produced right before the shot – drell being adjusted to see the entire spectrum of hanar bioluminescence through a surgical operation not a genetic modification – most quarians being single children: this would cause their population to dwindle while it's just zero-growth – "Keelah se'lai" not simply "Keelah" as a screw word – Irunean flora living in Citadel-standard atmospherical conditions – all mass effect fields being called "biotic" fields – this is only the case of those fields produced by organics – Keelah Si'yah moving at an approximate cruising speed of eleven light years per day – with this speed, they'd have reached Andromeda at that point – the raloi thing discussed before, maybe not actually a contradiction – drell choosing what to remember; I'll need to see through conversations with Thane to confirm whether it's actually a contradiction or not. Well, maybe it's not that bad but it's by far too much for a book that was apparently for half a year in a review.

I don't think I would have noticed most of those errors, pretty impressive. Not sure I would label a lot of them "fatal" … your follow on that "maybe it's not that bad" is probably a good take.
I really don't know that the book was in review all that time. The author had stated she was done with the project, had delivered, but didn't know why there was a delay in publishing. Lots of folks … including me … have spit balled reasons why it was delayed, but the reality is, we don't know. BioWare does, but they're not sharing. In any case, nice eye for the details. Well done.

Sorry but most of those are not lore errors. "Fatal": indefensible, non-explainable contradiction. Like batarian embassy on the Citadel in 2186 or Miranda's biotics. There's no "minor" or "insignificant". All contradiction are fatal by definition, just a figure of speech. From what I could remember, though after thinking for a while some of those can be defended with enough lore stretching: – crowds of refugees coming from attacks on Noveria and Virmire – even though both of them were uninhabited Wrong. Both worlds were habited. – quarians waiting for the geth to "abandon" their homeworld – no quarian we see ever said that they anticipate anything like that. That "most of them" never saw Rannoch on their eyes is technically true, "everyone" includes "most". Not a lore error to expand on the mentality of individual quarians. – quarians described "bird-like", like why Because of their feet, that is even mentioned once from what a remember. Also not a lore error. – humans not caring about space at all as an insignificant minority. First counter-example: the protesters Cora meets in the first chapter of Initiation, seeming to be a common sight. Most of human population (billions) still live on Earth. The ones who spacetravel or live in colonies are still a minority. – Blasto 8 being the favourite movie of the drell Sleepwalker: There wasn't even Blasto 7 at the point they departed...
Just because it wasn't mentioned it doesn't mean it didn't exist. Blasto 7 was still filming in 2186. – ...and so weren't Arc Pistols, they were only created based on Rael'Zorah's experiments. Minor lore error indeed. – the drell living poor underdog lives on Kahje, contrary to what the Codex says about them. Another expansion on how Drell individuals live. Not really a error. – only one city on Kahje being able to support drell lives. I don't know what the description of Kahje on the Wiki is based on, but it clearly says "domed cities", in plural. Only place where they can live without fear of getting Kepral's Sindrome due to the high relative humidity everywhere else on Kahje. – krogans being inflicted with the Genophage "decades" ago. Well, technically true, 200 decades ago. But that's not what was indented to be said. As you said not untrue. 200 decades or 2 millenia is the same. – mirroring surfaces described as more human than quarian trait of ship desing, contrary to what was said in Initiation Confess i really don't remember this detail. – a grandmother of a quarian on the Arc dying on Rannoch during the geth uprising – quarians don't live that much We never had any information before about Quarians lifespan. So also not a error. – weapons being fed using ammunition, not blocks for ammunition to be produced right before the shot Don't remember reading this yet. – drell being adjusted to see the entire spectrum of hanar bioluminescence through a surgical operation not a genetic modification Why not? They live in the future where FTL travel is possible, so why i ocular implant seems impossible? Remember how much of them Shepard had after ME2? – most quarians being single children: this would cause their population to dwindle while it's just zero-growth They live in ships with limited space, air, food etecetera. Population control between the Quarians is not a lore error. – "Keelah se'lai" not simply "Keelah" as a screw word Now that is just nitpicking. – Irunean flora living in Citadel-standard atmospherical conditions Now that is one. – all mass effect fields being called "biotic" fields – this is only the case of those fields produced by organics Because they are one and the same. – Keelah Si'Yah moving at an approximate cruising speed of eleven light years per day – with this speed, they'd have reached Andromeda at that point Did you made the calculation to afirm that or is just nitpicking again? But since i am here: 365x11= 4015 Light Years in one year
2.500.000/ 4015= 622,666 Years
– the raloi thing discussed before, maybe not actually a contradiction Seems like expansion on lore. – drell choosing what to remember; I'll need to see through conversations with Thane to confirm whether it's actually a contradiction or not. They can choose to remember or not (but Thane did mention they can get "lost" on memories sometimes). Well, maybe it's not that bad but it's by far too much for a book that was apparently for half a year in a review.
