I also really loved that about the Anders romance, which is still my number one across all bioware games. It's strange they'd get the impression that gay and bi men don't want emotional depth and commitment from romances, given it seems to be the one thing everyone here is strongly agreeing on, despite extremely disparate taste in most other ways. Not strange in terms of stereotypes of the gay community being promiscuous/noncommittal, though, I guess. And, yeah, I've never believed Jaal was always going to be available. If it wasn't for the social media backlash, I still don't believe he'd have been a m/m option. lol I mean, his writer may very well have had the intention early, but I think they scrapped for time with full intention of Reyes and Gil being it in the final product well before release. Of course, it is just speculation. I mean, I can't defend the ME teams, we had to fight to be treated like equal customers with every single game (so maybe it's better Anthem doesn't have romances), but I'd like to think that the DA team does not believe, even subconsciously, that gay men don't like commitment... Both Bull's and Dorian's relationships felt very casual, so hopefully they'll go the other way next time around, if for no other reason than not repeating themselves.

(@daveliam was that you?) I'm glad they did, but it's too bad they couldn't do gender select too. Hopefully they'll keep getting more inclusive. I think Spiders has potential and I'm keeping an open mind to Geeedfall, although I don't want to set myself up for disappointment. lol

If someone wants to refuse to accept reality and actual words from author in order to image some nonexistent reasons- more power to you. It doesn't change the canon is a slightest. Solas not being bisexual because lack of time is a bummer. Solas not being bisexual because they wanted to avoid a trope is even worse. But I still haven't heard a good narrative reason for Solas not being Bi. AS in, who he is as a person. All along it's been implied that they write the person/character first and then decide later if the character they wrote prefers women or men. The writers didn't ask themselves as writers what sexuality Solas had and Solas "says" he's straight. Solas could have said, "I'm bi" and the writers would have over ruled him with, "That's too tropey, you can't be bi or gay, because reasons not related to who you are, so your professed sexuality is irrelevant." I'm terrible at expressing myself, so I hope you got my point. His straightness has nothing to do with his character and who he is, and everything to do with avoiding "tropes" and time constraints. Never mind that Dorian's conversion story is a trope I've seen portrayed since the 90s as a kid. You can't claim you avoid tropes like the plague and then embrace another one and expect ME to not notice the convenience of it. I didn't, to be honest. You say that there is no good reasons for him to be straight? Well, how do you differentiate those reasons? How do you define good/bad reasons to be bi/gay/straight ect? I can not offer you any narrative reasons for him being straight except that his orientation was decided by his writer, same as Sera's orientation was decided by her's writer. For me it's a bloody good narrative reason What even is good narrative reason for being straight? He just is, it's his preference. Same with Dorian. He didn't become gay to rebel against his father, he just is. And what do you mean by "Solas would have said"? He is not real, literally everything he says is crafted by Weekes. So if Weekes made him straight, it means that he is- if he made him bi/gay, same would be applied. Are you implying that writers got their own characters wrong?

I thought they intended Dorian to look south-east Asian, like his voice actor, Ramon Tikaram. I seem to recall Gaider or someone making a statement to that effect. Not that author intent remotely matters to me, but there ARE skin tones besides "white" and "black".

p.s: I wouldn't mind him being bi, actually. But imo arguing about something that is defined and can not be changed is fruitless.

one thought is the perception of lesbian relationships that go fast and heavy into lurve and devotion territory in real life. I think my bio mother moved her girlfriend into the house inside of a month of meeting her. second thought is, Cassandra, Dorian, and Iron Bull (maybe more I know of) have break up options after the sex. Whereas I couldn't sleep with Cullen and break up with him later if I wanted to. So is it the perception that only gay men want light love free love or is it simply the perception by men of other men that they want the light love free romance? I was pretty shocked to see the "let's break up" option literally while laying nude next to Cassandra seconds after her love confession. I don't know. I want to give them the benefit of doubt, I think this team deserves it. So I'm going to assume that marriages being available only to female PCs is also a coincidence and not another nod to the mindset that men don't like feelings and commitment.

Other than wearing a tight ass suit, and having a stereotypical dead beat father? And Jacob plays a baby daddy stereotype and run off? Yeah, he's well represented. Jacob was horrible representation for a black man. As you listed he's practically a walking stereotype. It's one of reasons why I personally can't stand his character. It's the writer who created a him as one and the "romance" pursuit is so aggressive. It's very obvious that they fetishize a black man.

There's also Cyberpunk 2077 to look forward to, and I'm curious as to how they'll deal with romances. I can only guess at how they'll handle the romances. My issue with it is that right off the bat, they've taken an RP choice out of my hands. I have to play a person who would get drunk at a party and have a one night stand with a stranger. That doesn't give me much to work with that I like. And if they're going to take that much control of the RP, then I'd probably end up with "flirt options" like I got with Shepard that basicly boiled down to, "wanna fuck?". Which is what they were with the human and the cockroach.

Another RPG from Obsidian albeit without romance options at all, at least that is what they said the last time. Maybe Bioware should go for that with the DA franchise as well.... no romances! At least they would be able to focus more on actually making a good game than trying to force representation of every single sexuality, gender, race, kink and fetish!

They were too busy trying to make a proper game to even consider making more than a single proper romance. Which game do you mean? Because if it's MEA (or any other ME game, for that matter), then I don't buy that explanation. They had time to make full romances for straight men (who never had less than two squad members), while gay men always got crumbs. CC faces, ship NPCs, a smaller animation budget. I'm not cutting them any slack, because the development was rocky.

They say most romances will be bi, but most romances will probably also be hit it and quit it style. The Witcher as a franchise only had a couple romances that mattered. If Cyberpunk 2077 is like that, will the few romances that are actually romances be bi, will they be mixed genders? I don't want to be too optimistic.
