I don't know if avoiding stereotypes altogether is the way to go, it limits character designing and writing a lot if you are trying to avoid traits and behavior because x character happens to be y. Characters shouldn't be based on stereotypes, that much is true, but trying to avoid stereotypical things like a plague isn't that much better either. Apparently that's literally why we have straight Solas. I said exactly that recently somewhere and someone said I was accusing the writer of not knowing his own characters.

I'm a sad Zevran fan because everyone is hating on his romance and he is in my top three romances and I just don't get it. He and Alistair and Fenris have little pieces of my heart with their names stamped on them. What did he do that was so anti gay exactly? Zevran is a wonderful fellow and I adore him and his romance (even though he happens to be in DAO which I dislike). Issues people have with the Zevran romance probably revolve around his fitting the "promiscuous bisexual" trope that BioWare loves to repeat (Isabela, Bull).

I love Zev, but it annoys me how irrelevant they've let him be from introduction until now. Every other origins romance is a big deal in world and Zev never gets anything substantial. Maybe someday we'll go to Antiva and he'll finally get some content again.

I'm accusing the writer of being a blundering doofus and coming up with fake reasons for why he didn't grow a pair and make Solas bi as originally planned.

I suspect a lot of the annoyance comes from the "depraved bisexual" trope, and the fact that he as good as says that he "learned" his bisexuality in order to be a more efficient assassin, and he outright states he prefers women, which I would absolutely be insulted by if a guy said that to me IRL. I want love and commitment, I'm not going to accept that I will just automatically be second best to literally ANY WOMAN, regardless of looks and personality.

But then, you know he'd have only bugged out and hit on Cassandra or something...

Once you hear Zevran go on about Wynne's breasts over multiple playthroughs you just can't go back to taking him seriously as a romance. (well that's one reason anyway)

I'm a sad Zevran fan because everyone is hating on his romance and he is in my top three romances and I just don't get it. He and Alistair and Fenris have little pieces of my heart with their names stamped on them. What did he do that was so anti gay exactly? Yeah, sorry for the Zev bashing on my end. He's definitely my least favorite of all of the m/m romances in any Bioware game. But it's for a variety of reasons: - He's not physically my type. I'm not into skinny guys OR long hair, so he gets two strikes right off the bat for me. - The m/m romance dialogue is cringy. Back when they started including m/m romances, they locked them behind really eye-roll inducing "So you are okay with me liking guys?" dialogue. Sky, Zevran, Anders, and Fenris all have this language in their romances. And it's super annoying to see over and over. Zev's is the worst offender to me (although Sky's is pretty bad too). - He is constantly talking about his conquests. I get that this is just part of his character, but the whole 'promiscuous bisexual' trope has been played out for years, so it's was frustrating that this was the direction that they went with him. It was just so over the top and unavoidable too. Plus, they very heavily skewed towards females. I certainly have no problem with bisexual character preferring one gender over the other, but when it's so heavily skewed it starts to feel like he's straight but will make an exception for the PC, which is not great. Out of all of Zev's stories, there are only two other guys (one line about a prince who he left naked except for the earring and Taliesen, but that only comes out if you advance far into Zev's story arc -- otherwise, Taliesen is presented as just another Crow. - He is constantly hitting on women in front of the male PC, even after you've entered into a relationship with him. It was incredibly frustrating to have your "boyfriend" going on and on and on and on about Wynne's magical tits. He hits on Wynne, Morrigan, and Leliana but not Alistair or Oghren (if I'm remembering correctly). So again, very skewed. I would have appreciated it if the overt flirting with women would have been disabled once you enter in a romance with him as a male PC. And, to be honest, if Zevran was one of two options, a lot of this would be much more tolerable. I'd view him more like Bull, who I actually don't mind as much. Had Alistair been available as well, then Zevran would have been a choice and therefore it's easier to take alot of his flaws. But when he's the only option, then it makes it harder to accept that he was pretty clearly written with the female Warden in mind. But that's just my take on it.

Also... you really think Zevran's is worse than Fenris's "Is it because I'm a man?" Honestly frickin ruins the love scene for me b/c the snarky one is so stupid.

I think this would be a nice change of pace. A LI more like Varric or Gorim (lol not just citing dwarves on purpose - I just mean a confident, secure guy). I know hurt/comfort appeals to a lot of people but straight/bi ladies get a LOT of that so maybe it's time for a LI whose self-worth isn't strongly tied to the protagonist or the protagonist's decisions? Gomez, stop! You are making me need to replay DA:O with a Lady Aeducan again. Their dynamic was awesome. And I'd love to see a romance like that again. I was always disappointed at how unsatisfying their reunion was, though. I appreciated that my Aeducan could tell him she fell for a human bard, tho. They did have a cool dynamic. I'm a sad Zevran fan because everyone is hating on his romance and he is in my top three romances and I just don't get it. He and Alistair and Fenris have little pieces of my heart with their names stamped on them. What did he do that was so anti gay exactly? I love the crap out of him - there are just some issues with how he's written as a m/m LI. Like how hard it is to find out he was in a relationship with Taliesen (before WoT2 came out, you had to go to Denerim with Zev at mid approval - not enough to betray you, but not enough to defend you, so that he walks away from the battle. In these circumstances and ONLY these circumstances, back at camp he'll admit that Taliesen was "a friend... and more"). He flirts with Wynne/Leliana/Morrigan all the time but his flirtatious banters with Alistair were either cut or they're just bugged. Some people feel that his comment about the Crows looking for a "certain open-mindedness" among recruits suggests his interest in men was forced or fabricated... I disagree with that, I think it's just awkwardly worded, but ya know.... there's that. He's immediately flirtatious with a female Warden but keeps a more professional distance with a male Warden until later, etc. etc. I think all of these issues TOGETHER make people not a fan of his romance. Plus some people just don't like his personality, his promiscuity, his moral ambiguity. And then there are some people who just aren't into elves, or find him too androgynous-looking, or whatever other preference they might have. Still my fave LI in Origins tho. But I'm also not a gay dude.

Suvi's erased her sexuality "we keep things professional dudebro" I'd like to bring this up again. I have a super strong preference to never date people from work. On two occasions in my late teens early 20s I considered breaking that rule but never actually did. If I ran into someone awesome and amazing who was available, I may break that rule. It's not a never situation. But you better believe if someone I'm NOT interested in at work approached me romantically, I would pull out the reason, "I don't date people I work with" on the spot with no qualms. No need to offer any further information about my sexuality, which is none of their business anyway, or the fact that I could be tempted to break this rule- just not with them. I'm not very eloquent, but essentially because women expect backlash from telling men no, we fib to avoid the back lash. With Ryder even being in the "boss" level position, the fear of backlash is even stronger on this front. Even if Ryder has seemed to be a great boss so far, any woman under his command have no idea how he'd handle a romantic rejection. So this is no bi erasure, this is literally how some women think (I'd be one of them) in the world we live in.

I absolutely DO mind being told that an LI prefers women over men. Just keep that shit on lockdown, have some fucking tact, jesus christ. I would never ask in the first place.
I've heard men say shit like that they'd fool around with a guy but never pursue a relationship with one, or "I'm bi after tequila". If that's how you feel, then stick to women and leave me the hell alone.. I won't deny your sexual identity, but I am not here to be anyone's experiment, or to be led on.

And you really think the dudebros who wrote Suvi think like that? They weren't writing her so that she lets down straight dudebros without hurting their snowflake feelings? I mean... isn't that what I just said? Rejecting a man you work for may have consequences outside of just hurting their feelings. That's a concern for women, with men, specifically. I have already admitted in this thread that I am very uninclined to believe that someone is pushing an SJW agenda. I am just as unlikely to believe that someone is pushing the whatever they're calling the opposite of an SJW agenda. sooooooooo.... you can think they're being dude bros if you want, maybe they were being dude bros and I'm the wrong one, but it doesn't make her reaction any less like reality to have replied like that to someone she's not interested in at work.

He hits on Wynne, Morrigan, and Leliana but not Alistair Only slightly on-topic, but I thought I'd drop these off here. 👀 Alistair: So those... designs you have all over your back... Zevran: They're called tattoos. And I have them in many more places than just on my back, my friend. Alistair: Err... right. I hear that someone gets those by having needles put the ink under your skin? Zevran: A great many needles, amongst other things. Yes, that would be true. Alistair: Didn't that hurt? Zevran: Ohhh, yes, yes. But it is not so bad, in truth. If you like, I could give you one. I learned a bit of the art myself in Antiva. Alistair: Oh, no. No, I don't think so. Zevran: Come, it will just be a small one. Perhaps the symbol of the Grey Wardens? Something manly! Where are my needles? Alistair: Um... maybe some other time. I'm... I'm going to go stand over here, now.
Alistair: I've been thinking about those ink drawings, what did you call them? Tattoos? Are you... still willing to do one? Zevran: Oh-ho! You've decided to take the plunge, have you? What is a little pain, am I right? Alistair: I'm not worried about that. I think they look interesting, though I'd want mine... smaller. When can you do it? Zevran: Not so fast, my friend. There is an entire ritual to how this is done, do you not know? First I need to bathe you in a mixture of olives and rosewater. Alistair: You need to... bathe me? That seems... odd. Zevran: No, no, no, not at all. It needs to be worked into your skin, preparing it to receive the ink. The massage is quite pleasurable, do not worry. You are in good hands. Alistair: The... massage? You're... having me on, aren't you? Zevran: I might be. I might not be. Shall I describe the rest of the ritual to you? Alistair: Hmm. No. No, on second thought I'll just pass. Zevran: (laughs) Excellent choice!
Shale: I am curious. Will the painted elf answer a question? Zevran: Why not? I appear to have all day. Shale: The painted elf attacked the Grey Warden, and yet it still lives. Had the decision been mine, its skull would be so much pulp right now. Zevran: Oh, I don't know. Could you destroy something as pretty as I am, hmmm? Shale: Easily. I fail to see how any measure of attractiveness would make one difficult to crush. Zevran: Perhaps you do not know how to look, then. Here, take that templar fellow. Rugged good looks, quick wit, manly shoulders. Just getting him to hop borders is a challenge worthy of great heroes. Alistair: A challenge? I'd happily hop borders, given the chance. I've never even been close to leaving Ferelden! So.... at least they exist, somewhere. Zevran is hot for Alistair.

What line are you talking about with this one? I never did Fenris’s romance personally so I’m not as familiar with it. When Hawke wakes up and finds Fenris already dressed and standing by the fire, and Fenris says he has to go... Hawke has three dialogue choices (as usual): Green: "Is it because I'm a man?" Blue: "It is a lot to take in, isn't it?" Red: Probably something awful but I never choose red xD

I'm pretty sure I got these in my game. That's what I was referring to. I know I've heard the last one in-game, but I've always heard the tattoo banter was bugged. Maybe not, though? I don't have Alistair in my party a lot so I could have just missed it.

Zevran openly flirts with Alistair and I don't think it's just for a laugh. But Wynne? He is absolutely having her on to get her to stop with her Chantry Conversion "don't you want to be a nice person who doesn't kill people" bull shit. Lel flirts with Zevran and Zevran flirts with Lel regardless of romance status. Leliana's is even worse- she can even tell Zevran to drop trow if hardened about Marjolaine with her romance interest standing right there. This is, in my opinion, a banter bug. Or they forgot to code the banter not to come on if in romance status. But it is NOT the writers saying Zev or Lel are whore sluts who would cheat on their lovers. Zev is probably the most loyal being in the entire Dragon Age Franchise.

Red: Probably something awful but I never choose red xD Red: So that's it then? It was very calm, actually. Like someone who'd just been hurt and was hiding it, so personally think it's a great line.

I'd like to bring this up again. And you really think the dudebros who wrote Suvi think like that? They weren't writing her so that she lets down straight dudebros without hurting their snowflake feelings? Sadly this. Still remember that screencap from the virtual guide that confirm that she was intended to be bisexual with a pic showing her romance with Scott, fortunately we have Sheryl Chee saving lesbian representation. Just imagining Scott having the possibility to bang all the female characters make me sick to my stomach it would be cool if someone post Zev flirting with Alistair, because I never heard a thing I played four times with them lol

Just imagining Scott having the possibility to bang all the female characters make me sick to my stomach This makes no sense. The idea of Male Scott having the chance to romance ALL available characters makes you ill to your stomach? what is this even supposed to mean? Edit Add: And can we stop ignoring the fact that people don't have to declare their sexuality at work just to get out of dating someone? that they can pick any reason under the sun? If Suvi had literally just said a single sentence, "No, thank you." HOW MANY MEN would have freaked the FUCK out for not getting a GOOD reason?
