Edit 1: I've updated the title so this thread can be used for all kinds of discussions about playing or attempting to play strongholds, legendary missions and legendary contracts solo.
Edit 2: I've deleted some of the older videos, so there might be empty entrys in this thread. I edit the link out of my posts, but can't do this when being quoted obviously.
---------------------------------
I've been trying for so long to complete a GM2 stronghold alone without anybody else joining in. Usually someone always ends up in my game, sometimes just before the boss - even though I thought Bioware fixed the problem with people joining late into an ongoing session. Desperate times I guess with less and less players. Bu I really wish I could just set the strongholds on private as well to solo them. Hopefully at some point Bioware adds this option. I'm not even sure why they have this restriction, they should know people want to try solo runs - a lot of people still do in ME3MP to this day so it's not like this comes at a surprise.
Anyways... today I started another run and ended up solo in the Temple Of Scar stronghold on GM2. I just played and expected some people to join at some point but today I managed to solo the whole damn thing because no other players ended up in my game and I had it all for myself. Yummy...
Unfortunately I messed up the run three times though by dying and having to redo the whole thing (two times at the Scelos fight). I was just a bit too confident in these situations and/or messed up the timing. But I didn't want to play it too safe (which I have to at some points anyways) and I still just want to have fun. So unfortunately due to the fails the video got a bit longer than expected. I added markers in the description so if you want to watch it you can jump over the failed parts if you like.

Considering game design, (co-op for best rewards), this is a sad day. With an active player base, this can't happen.
Let's pray that DA4 game design is more forgiving.

Don’t worry, pretty soon you will have plenty of opportunities to play solo... I'd prefer this to be optional though by restricting the session to a private game that I can solo or duo - not having to rely on a delining playerbase and hoping nobody joins my ongoing game. Speaking of... I tried another Heart Of Rage run but as usually I got some company pretty fast. So far the furthest I have managed to play solo until somebody joined was until shortly after the Titan. Playing solo in Heart Of Rage has also gotten a hell of a lot more difficult ever since they buffed the enemy mages by them not going down anymore after a shield break. I've had my fair share of fights in which everything was dead in that first area except 3 of these bastards and they got me in the end... They don't get stunned by my spark dash anymore, they don't go down to the ground, I can't fight them with my ultimate and they just keep on spamming their attacks. They are so annoying now and way too strong for my current melee loadout compared to every other enemy... I also tried another Tyrant Mine solo but was put into a game with somebody right away. The other player left pretty early though so I continued to solo the stronghold like I intended. Unfortunately right after the second chest and before I was able to take on the Swarm Tyrant solo my game got filled up again. I really don't get it... at this point I was into the game for around 25 minutes so the game should not even be considering putting others into my game anymore as the session has progressed to much... so unfortunately I ended with a semi-solo and could not fight the Swarm Tyrant alone. Here's the video: -Video removed by creator-

Just played Temple Of Scar on GM3 solo until the first chest. What a chore... not really strong enough to enjoy going further with my current loadout. I need way better inscriptions on most of my stuff and a higher gearscore for the base damage for this endeavour. Up until Scelos I could possibly manage but it sure ain't fun to watch (or to play) when those legendary rocket turrets need sooooo much damage compared to GM2.

Not if you need like 2 full Ultimates to take down a legendary rocket turret (when I can usually take down 2 with 1 Ultimate in GM2). The scaling in GM3 strongholds compared to GM2 is just really off. Although you could say the same about GM2 compared to GM1 I guess. In GM3 Freeplay it's okay, but GM3 strongholds just aren't enough fun for me right now. Maybe with a solid team, but not solo. I just wish I could slot and unslot these inscriptions and make the build much more the way I like it. It's the far bigger problems as the drop rates itself in my opinion... too much shitty or just decent rolls but no way to actually put some thought into making a good build because you can't change anything. With all the legendaries I keep (because there is no benefit in salvaging them right now) I could really extract some nice inscriptions. And then put them where I can actually use them...

Obadiah: so I just played a stronghold via quickplay and we played Sunken Cell on GM3 as a 3-man team for the most part. After grinding down the boss (which felt like it took forever) a 4th player joined in. I guess joining via quickplay can be the only explanation. But it's bullshit then, they should fix that too. I mean not only from my perspective of wanting to solo all the strongholds but also from a players point of view who equips consumables and then gets put into the game AFTER the boss has been defeated. And the newly connected player could not even make it to the boss area in time so even if loot dropped for him, he didn't get to see it....

I'm on the fence on this . The goal of the game is to have four people taking on the content. People may wan to play the four player content solo, but the goal of the game is to have four people doing it. Say a player(s) disconnects, gets frustrated that they can't defeat a boss, or its taking too long and leaves, and the group is left shorthanded. If they remaining players aren't strong enough to kill the boss, what are their options if no one else is allowed to come in.
Granted this is not a game where all the javelins have a specific function like healer, tank, DPS, but I don't think locking a mission/stronghold under any circumstance is the best way either. Someone coming in at the end losses a couple of minutes of their time if things are finished before they get there. A group that can't finish a dungeon because it lost players and couldn't replace them lost more than a couple of minutes if they can't finish.

I personally never do bosses on gm3, just chest runs. Its too inefficent wasting more time on the boss that Will drop 4-5 apex ítem drops than just doing it in less time again till the second chest for around triple the amount of apex drops.
I actually Will run gm3 hor solo till the titan, which is an 8-10 min run for me and if i get company in the meanwhile ill go for the second chest.
If you dont mind im gona highjack ur thread and post a vid of a solo gm3 hor titan run. I use storm btw.

cypherj : I see your point and I agree it might be a problem under these circumstances. The solutions are actually not that hard to find: allow the creation of private lobbys for ALL content. Then there wouldn't be any changes necessary to the quickplay function (for public lobbies) I guess even though one could argue it'd still be nice if the game asked you first if it's okay to put you into a session that has been going on for quite a while so everyone can decide if they still want to join or if they rather want to play a session that has just started a short while ago. Aside from wanting to play solo I can't tell you how many times I was in a 4-player team with some people I knew, someone disconnected and we all had to leave and make a new lobby because we could not set it to private and the game put a random player in our group faster than the player who disconnected could return and rejoin the session. Very annoying and just super stupid and unnecessary restrictions in the game design. So having the option to set lobbies to private regardless of the content that is being played is not just about a group of people who want to play solo or maybe as a 2-player coop team but also protecting the session against random people filling in the spots in a group of friends if somebody drops out. What is also pretty stupid: last night I tried getting into GM3 quickplay strongholds. After a while I always got the message that no games could be found and I should try changing the difficulty. Game seems really empty, couldn't even find ongoing GM2 games at times. Anyways, when I wanted to just start my own GM3 stronghold and not join via quickplay the game tried finding a match for me for several minutes. Nothing happened and I was sitting there and talking to the game "just start the damn level with just me in it - how are you supposed to find an ongoing game (quickplay or standard) if you don't even let people initiate them at times like; right now". Sometimes I feel like they really want to show us how expensive their precious server space is. Just open a goddamn lobby if people want to play, wtf Bioware... ximae : I only do GM3 strongholds for fun and challenge and that's why I like to do the whole run if the team is up for it. It's actually the only thing that keeps me playing and enjoying this game because the loot sure isn't. From a farming perspective I totally agree with you, it's very inefficient to do the boss fight in strongholds as they all take up a lot of time compared to the time you need to get there. It's actually the same on every difficulty. Even in GM1 it's technically not worth it if you take a look at the time needed for it compared to the time it takes get there and the possible drops along the way. Especially in HoR. When bosses didn't even had a chance to drop anything besides the guaranteed masterwork item I hardly ever did these fights. On the other hand I'd go into GM3 freeplay or GM2 strongholds for farming to be honest. GM3 strongholds are just not worth it in that regard in my opinion if you mainly do them for the loot drops. I'll mainly just do it to enjoy the game and to get better (with things like specific movements, timings, ways to prioritize enemys or spawn locations and things like that) which sometimes leads to some epic fails as well.

well gm3 hor chest runs do have the best loot in game, like legendary per hour. There is a caveat though, u need to be already very well geared for that to be true. A well geared group of 4 can basically do that run as fast as gm2 but with improved legendary drop rate.
I personally do it because it is more challenging thus fun but also most rewarding, specially if i can at least run it with someone else till the second chest. I average about a legendary every two runs doing that. which is sligthly higher tan 1.5 legs/hr.
as mentioned the boss fight is not rewarding nor fun.

That's my feeling - they built a team based game so they focused on team based options. Still, they must know that lots of players played their multiplayer content in private groups or solo. There were challenges/awards/banners for solo runs in ME3 multiplayer. Maybe, knowing the player base size would drop, someone made a judgement to focus on causal players who want to multiplay over solo or private group players who don't? P.S. Also, lately when I quickplay Missions on the lower difficulties (Hard, GM1) I show up at a final boss fight, sometimes right before the boss is killed for some solo player. That is annoying.

I don't think Bioware understand what worked (private lobby for people would want to solo or play with 1 or 2 friends without pickups, ...) and didn't work (no text chat, RNG card drop, ...) in ME3MP Sometimes I feel like they somehow managed to switch these things and therefore leaving behind what was good and not improving much on what was bad. I mean, "we" (as in some people other than me lol) literally had to build kind of an own text chat in ME3MP with the console commands. At least there were some more options to mod the game. I've played thousands of hours of ME3MP and somehow it's amazing that I have an easier time finding a platinum match lobby pretty much any time of the day opposed to getting a full squad for GM3 or even GM2 strongholds in Anthem at primetime. And of course: when I wanted to play solo or duo in ME3MP I could just put the lobby into private mode but whenever I wanted to find people to play with I usually had no problem with that either. I just played 3x the Temple Of Scar stronghold on GM3 including the boss fight. I was usually solo for the first part until right before the Gatekeeper or the chest. Now I actually wish I could try the whole damn thing solo. It'll be tough for sure, especially since I sometimes mess something up so foolishly but I'd really like to try it. At least until Scelos. Maybe I'll try again later at a different time of day and see how it goes. At least it's a bit easier to stay solo in GM3 than it is in GM2...

I'm not surprised at all that ME3MP have a bigger playerbase than MEAMP or Anthem, actually it's quite reassuring cause it's a good game With 2 friends, we put between 600 and 1200 hours in ME3MP, so when MEA arrived, we jumped on it at release, but only ended putting up a bit more than 100h before dropping it because it was inferior in almost every aspect We're so nostalgic right now that we reinstalled ME3 a few weeks ago, might give it another shot

I'm on the fence on this . The goal of the game is to have four people taking on the content. People may want to play the four player content solo, but the goal of the game is to have four people doing it.
But the primary cause of this isn't bad game design, it's just a simple lack of players. If the player base was big enough, there would always be four players in these missions, and you would probably only get dropped into a stronghold due to one of the occurrences I mentioned earlier. But when the player base is as low as it is now, there's a good chance that when quene this will happen because there are more solo/undersized groups doing things.

I've played a lot of ME3MP and still did up until Anthem. I've also put in around 100 hours into MEAMP but ultimately came to the conclusion that it wouldn't get any better. And I never really enjoyed any of it even closely as ME3MP. I still have ME3 installed at all times, even now - although I haven't played it in a while. Half of my FL in Origin is from ME3MP and the other from Anthem and guess who's online/active/playing more overall...

This video is just a recording of the boss battle vs. The Monitor on GM3 with randos. This time it was me who was thrown into an ongoing game shortly before the Furies and the 2nd chest. The fight takes quite a while and is a lot less fun than fighting Scelos. But if anyone is interested about this fight from my Interceptor's point of view, you can take a look at it.
