With the new comic announced, and her not just being a returning character but the focus of the sty, I figured it was time to make a thread about Francesca Invidus. "Francesca is a naive, sheltered but neglected princess. Her father thinks nothing of her and ignores her power. Her brother admired her power, and that was the closest thing she ever found to love and acceptance. She has no idea how to make her way in the Tevinter Imperium, because she believes in family and beauty. But now that her brother is dead, she is determined to do things the Tevinter way. If only she can figure that way out." - Nunzio DeFilippisFor those who didn't read the comic Dragon Age: Deceoption, here is the summary of her in that story from Dragon Age Wiki. Francesca encounters Calix Qintara in a tavern. The two engage in a brief flirtation before being interrupted by Magister Aramis. Later, Francesca returns to the tavern with her brother Florian to meet with Calix again. Before they can meet, they are interrupted by 'Magister Aramis' again. Aramis reveals that she is investigating Calix and House Qintara for possible links to the Venatori. While Florian and the magister are distracted, Francesca steals away to speak to Calix. Francesca admits her family was not certain whether Magister Qinatara was 'one with the cause' but is now convinced. She proposes House Qintara and House Invidus form an alliance against the Lucerni. To bind the agreement, she gives Calix a gift: a magical focusing stone. However, shortly afterwards, Calix is revealed to actually be an imposter and a con artist and is driven off by Florian and the Invidys household guards, with the focusing gem still in his possession.
Back in the Invidus estate, Florian chastises his sister for losing the gem to Calix. He further tells her that her naivety and lack of strategic thinking is the reason he and their father did not involve her with the Venatori, despite her impressive talents as a mage. Florian assures his sister that he will fix her mistake by taking back the gem and killing the thieves responsible before their father can find out. However, he is killed after confronting two Antivan Crows. Francesca later finds his body in an alley and vows to finish what he started.
She heads to the Qintara estate to warn the Magister against the thieves, only to find out that the Magister has been dead for several years and is being impersonated by his former slave, Gaius. Before Gaius can kill her to keep his secret, Ser Aaron, Vaea and the thieves burst in and save her life. As the qunari invade Ventus and the Qintara estate, Francesca abandons her vengeance against Calix in exchange for safe passage out of the city. She safely escapes with Ser Aaron, Vaea, and Calix. Calix invites her to join their group as they get away from the burning city.

From the Dark Horse Comics summary: "Dragon Age: Blue Wraith starts off with the fanatical Qunari seeking to topple the Tevinter mageocracy. Caught in the middle, one powerful young mage’s desperate search for her father brings her face-to-face with a notorious mage hunter—Fenris, the Blue Wraith."Confirmation this is talking about Francesca. Gamedam Meister @gamedammeister @ndefilippis Christina Weir Out of curiosity, is the powerful young female mage that is mentioned Francesca from Deception? Reading the description made me immediately think of her. Either way, I’m really looking forward to reading another great Dragon Age comic series from you both. Christina Weir Christina WeirIt is Francesca! She's got a lot to figure out in this new mini. That is amazing to hear. I look forward to reading another adventure with her. With this confirmation, I was wondering if you could answer something: Is the young powerful female mage the summary talks about Francesca? I immediately thought of her when reading that. Yes. The whole group we've been building is in this story, but it focuses primarily on Francesca, Fenris, Vaea and Autumn.

Lemme guess, she will appear in the next Dragon Age and will have to read this novels to understand some things better like with Inquisition.
Sounds boring to say the least.

Thanks to nunziodefilippis, we have a little character blurb for her. Adding it to the OP. Francesca is a naive, sheltered but neglected princess. If only she can figure that way out." - Nunzio DeFilippis

Francesca is a naive, sheltered but neglected princess. Her father thinks nothing of her and ignores her power. Neither of these things make sense. Is "princess" just a figure of speech? There is no king in Tevinter, no royalty. Even if there was, she's not the Archon's daughter anyway. And a powerful mage from an altus family being ignored in a society where mage power is the stock in trade? Her father must be a complete idiot.

Neither of these things make sense. Is "princess" just a figure of speech? There is no king in Tevinter, no royalty. Even if there was, she's not the Archon's daughter anyway I assume this is just a figure of speech since I am sure the writers have been made aware of the political set-up in Tevinter. And a powerful mage from an altus family being ignored in a society where mage power is the stock in trade? Her father must be a complete idiot. This one is explained in the spoiler section of her history. Whilst she has magical power, her father considered her too naïve and not politically savvy enough to include her in his schemes. (It would be a similar story in Orlais if the younger child of nobility was inept at the Game.) The heir, which would be her older brother, was the one her father focussed his attention on as he showed promise in being able to keep ahead in Tevinter society by the usual means (political scheming and using whatever means necessary to maintain one's position). There may also be a degree of gender bias in Tevinter society that means male offspring are valued more than female because only they are capable of reaching the highest echelons, particularly in the Imperial Chantry that has a lot of clout and where the Black Divine and the senior clerics are always male. Francesca's main worth in her father's eyes was probably in the area of a politically advantageous marriage.

On the first point, I didn’t capitalize the P in princess because it was not a literal title, but a figure of speech meant to suggest a level of wealth and power that has left her naive. On the second point, there is power we can see and power we miss. If/when you read the comic, you’ll see why her father didn’t notice how powerful she truly is. But without spoiling it... see gervaise21’s response.

nunziodefilippis I was wondering, since you did it with Vaea on her thread, how would Francesca get along with the members of the Inquisition from DAI now that she is a part of Vaea's group thus kind of working with them? (I'm sure this will lead to asking about a ton of other characters too, but let's start with sorta coworkers. )

Vaea was fully part of the Inquisition by the end of Knight Errant, so it was easier to answer for her without spoiling. Francesca is figuring out who she is and where she fits, so I’d hate to answer just yet...

Is there anything you’d like to talk about the character that doesn’t go into spoiler territory? Here are some random tidbits about Francesca... 1) When we gave design notes to Fernando for Deception, we told him that a model for Francesca would be Anna Camp from Pitch Perfect. The red hair and freckles came later, once he did a first pass at the designs, and we all thought red hair worked well. 2) We didn't write the first version of the miniseries breakdown with Francesca joining the group. She was supposed to arrive at the Qintara Estate and complicate the job. But when it came time for Issue 3, we realized the larger complication of the Qunari made her as much in danger as the team, and that them teaming up was much better storytelling. So we replotted the final issue, and had her escape the estate with the team. And that was when we knew we wanted her to travel with the group in the end. As a result, her being with the group was as much a surprise to us as it was to her, and we completely rebuilt our plans for Blue Wraith to make it center on her (as well as Fenris, who was always part of this). 3) Early plans for Blue Wraith had a lot more time between her and Calix than you'll see in the upcoming mini. As she grew, we realized we wanted her to play primarily off of Fenris, Vaea and Autumn, so we plotted around those four.

I'm really glad that you and Christina changed your mind about her involvement in Issue 3. She was my favorite of the new characters in that miniseries and I have a feeling she might be my second favorite overall behind Vaea. Hopefully she cements herself in that place in the upcoming story. I'm curious to see how she plays off Autumn. I have a few guesses with Fenris and Vaea, but those two I have no idea.

We do know that only men can become the "Black Divine" or a senior cleric, but all that matters in Tevinter politics is being born to the right bloodline and having a cunning mind.

all that matters in Tevinter politics is being born to the right bloodline and having a cunning mind. I'm not so sure about that. Obviously that is the case in the Magisterium generally but I do not recall any instance of there being a female Archon. Somehow at least two of the Old Gods changed from female to male after the establishment of the Imperium (Andoral and Zazikel) and as I have already stated the Black Divine and senior clerics of the Imperial Chantry are male, apparently because that is the way things have always been done. In the early days of the faith in Tevinter, the Archon was both political and religious supreme leader and it was only out of a desire to be accepted by the Southern Chantry that this was changed and the head of the church became separate from the head of state. Anyway, the rest of my comments have been endorsed by Nuncio. The main reason her father ignored her is that she was considered too naïve and lacked the cunning for Tevinter politics, which as you say is the prime requisite for advancement. I was answering Melbella, who seemed to think her father was an idiot for ignoring her magical power when that is commonplace in Tevinter so not enough to impress her father, particularly when you consider his sympathies lay with the Venatori.

Some interesting tidbits about Francesca. ComicBook.com: How does Francesca come to be tangled up with Fenris of all people? Weir: In the wake of DECEPTION, Francesca finds herself traveling with people she barely knows, at least one of whom she still blames for the death of her brother. She quickly realizes that what she wants is to find her father. And she gets information about his fate that sets her on a collision course with the "Blue Wraith." ComicBook.com: What’s something you’re excited for folks to see? Anything you can tease? Weir: The growth of Francesca, and a chance to really see what made her who she is, and what pushes her to become something more and someone else. comicbook.com/gaming/2019/10/21/dragon-age-blue-wraith-interview-bioware-dark-horse/#9

She's cute. All the attention being given to her, plus the possibility for some character development when she sees what her nation does to those less fortunate, makes me think she'll be a companion, probably a LI, too. She could be a Pro-Tevinter but also a Pro-Reform type of character. Someone who will argue about the value of its culture and how there are decent magisters and who will seek to preserve as much of it as she can while still enacting reform towards giving Soporati a more equal footing. Or maybe that's just wishful thinking.

Maevaris and especially Calpernia (who isn´t that sympathic or that cute) are better candidates. Also i don´t think we don´t get more than one comic character becoming a DA 4 companion.

Plus, it's worth pointing out how her brother made sure to mention that she is more powerful than the average mage but nothing really came of that in the comic itself. Being really good at killing things is a prerequisite for being a companion. I think Maevaris and Calpernia are more likely to be quest givers.

Well, not in Deception, anyway... I'm looking forward to seeing her in action. If I'm allowed to ask, what kinds of spells does she tend to use? I know she could use a stasis spell since she offers to use it on Calix, but besides that I was curious what kind of mage she is.

You'll see on page 1 of the new mini exactly what type of magic she specializes in. It's not very typical in Tevinter. (Sorry to be cryptic, but I don't want to spoil everything)

I understand not wanting to spoil everything. We’ll see in less than two months.
