Reeeeeeeeally? So I haven’t had Witcher fans screaming at me for the past decade that The Witcher series was FAR superior than Dragon Age? You admit the series has been shit until the third game, that those fans were wrong and I was right not to get into it? I've never seen people say the Witcher series was better, I've heard people say Witcher 3 was better than Inquisition though. Dragon Age Origins was beloved by old school RPG fans for being the spiritual successor to Baldur's Gate. You'll rarely see RPG fans shit of the DA series as a whole.

I don't know why you keep repeating this like it's some sort of controversial opinion. Have you played the first 2 Witcher games? The first Witcher was a niche game for old school fans with a horrible rhythm combat system, the second Witcher was kinda Fable-ish, okay as an action-RPG I guess. You are correct, CD Projekt didn't hit it big till Witcher 3. They grew with every game, every game they took a step forward. Reeeeeeeeally? That’s weird, because I’ve had Witcher fans screaming at me for the past decade that The Witcher series was FAR superior than Dragon Age. But now that you’ve admitted the series was shit until the third game, I feel vindicated. Thanks, river82. I’ll tell those tasteless assholes how wrong they were.

The first Witcher has the reputation of having one of the worst combat systems ever included in a video game (Everybody just plays it for the nude cards)

Regarding IGN's post … what people feel about a game in the year it's released is sometimes different to how they feel about a game in 6 years time. So for the former they're measuring impact in the present, in the latter often they're measuring long lasting impact. Let's be real about Inquisition, it doesn't really move the genre forward in any sort of meaningful way. So the long term impact, for most people, is going to be ... lesser. Looking at the games IGN chose, 80 Days is an amazing Indie game. For real, more people should play that game. When it was released I posted about it on several forums, it desperately deserves more recognition. Shadow of Mordor probably had a more lasting impact due to the Nemesis system and what that can mean for games moving forward. Civilization 5 is just an amazing game in a genre where there's not too many amazing games (as opposed to the open world format which is a little saturated right now). Hearthstone's lasting impact is just undeniable. Still a huge game 7 years on. Deserving of a place on that list. Never really played Bayonetta 2, I just know people always rave about it. It's a fairly solid list. Inquisition didn't make it *shrugs*. It's not really a game where you feel its impact 7 years later. That's okay, not every game has to be that. It's a solid entry in the DA series though. My point exactly. At the time DAI won GOTY cause 2014 was a weak year and SOMEBODY had to win. It had the novelty of being the first "next gen" Bioware game. However in hindsight and especially after stronger games like TW3 came out, the impact that DAI had on the industry was minimal. Hell, KOTOR did more for the genre than DAI, same for ME1/ME2.

"The Witcher 3 is as close to a perfect game as we’re likely to see in this generation. This is a game that was so carefully and meticulously crafted, that even its most forgettable side missions would overshadow the A-plot of most other RPGs. Even if you’ve read all the books, you have to admit that not only did the developers nail these absolutely unforgettable characters in every way, but they may have even improved upon the source material. This is a game that unapologetically handles moral ambiguity, sexuality and dark humor in a way that never feels edgelord-y, which is nothing short of a miracle. The Witcher 3, in short, is a goddamn masterpiece." You are right, IGN has spoken.

Nier Automata i think i'll always remember, especially ending E, that got me tbh really got me in a really good way which was very surprising but very very welcome an all i mean is the title sequence
Didn't think i'd have enjoyed MGS5 as much as i did an certainly never imagined i'd have had as much fun with a cardboard box as i did either.
2 games i thought were better than both W3 an DA:I, ultimately means nothing though as i enjoyed all 4 an many others over the decade with some doing one thing better while others doing something else.
Thats what is great about gaming, so many great titles, so many adventures an stories an so many favourite tales to share with each other either coinciding or offering different perspective, some good some bad none really the same.
Meh anyhow

Meh anyhow My top 3 of th edecade jus thappens to be my 3 favourite games I own ME2, ME3 and DAI. I don' tneed a chart t otell m ewha tgames I do an ddon' like if I like a game enoughI'll keep playing it regardless. For example I can see myself co,ming back to NFS Heat to pla ythrough a secon dtime perhaps even more as I'm really really enjoying it. Th estory's been fun from wha tI'v eexperienced dodging cops go tarrested again earlier on and the various races have been intersting as well as this game hasa lot of interesting tracks. I nman yways it kin dof feels an dplays like a modern day NFSCarbon which is another old NFS game I like which I admit I'm kind of tempted t opick up and play again seeing as I still have it..

It's in the top 10 best games this last decade. It really is. They almost perfectly married old school DnD with modern TP camera and witty writing in a dark fantasy universe. I mean DA:O of course.

MajesticJazz gets to polish CDPR's knob about TW3 yet again...the whole reason this was posted to begin with. DAI doesn't "move the genre forward"? Haha, okay, sure.
Keep on keeping on...

Well, they did pick Shadows of Mordor from the same year instead of DAI... could be second thoughts, could be another journo's different opinion.
As for the rest of the threat... NO U.

Blah, arguing about The Witcher is so boring. Let's all make our own best of the decade lists and fight about some games I've actually played instead! Look, here's mine:
2010: Pokémon Black/White
The best story ever told in a Pokémon game combine with an exciting new region and a completely fresh dex to produce a real series highlight.
Honourable Mentions: Ghost Trick, Gray Matter, Limbo
2011: Batman: Arkham City
Probably the best superhero game ever made. Manages to combine a strong story with an open world that gives the player plenty of intersting side stuff to attempt if they want to. Notably excellent performance by Mark Hamill, who somehow manages to be even better as the Joker than he was before. If I live to be a hundred I will never forget those closing credits.
Honourable Mentions: The Elder Scrolls: Skyrim, L.A. Noir, Star Wars: The Old Republic, To The Moon. Man, this was a great year for games.
2012: The Secret World
Yeah, my favourite game from 2012 is an unsucessful MMORPG that nobody played that has sinced been relaunched with a much less intersting combat system so you can't even make an account any more. What of it?
Honourable Mentions: Pokemon Black 2/White 2, Thomas Was Alone, The Walking Dead (Season One)
2013: The Stanley Parable
No other game from this year came close to touching this incredibly funny and clever meditation on narrative and freedom in video games for me. I will absolutely fork out for the special edition when it arrives and laugh the entire time.
Honourable Mentions: Gone Home, Tomb Raider
2014: Dragon Age: Inquisition
Yeah, no surprises here. One of my top three favourite games of all time. There are so many reasons I love this game, but let's start with: my favourite BioWare companions (and advisors) ever, a protagonist with a choosable backstory and voicing, and the sheer joy of walking around in Thedas. Or riding a nuggalope around the Hissing Wastes under the moonlight.
Honourable Mentions: Tales of the Borderlands, Transistor
2015: Pillars of Eternity
Obsidian reinvent the isometric real-time-with-pause fantasy cRPG and do an excellent job of it. Fascinating world and a very satisfying amount of build variety, both of which get even better in the sequel.
Honourable Mentions: Her Story, Shadowrun: Hong Kong, Technobabylon
2016: Oxenfree
You know, when I looked back over my notes I was surprised to find this was my favourite game from 2016. It's a wonderful few hours, but it's pretty slight. Looking at the Game Awards nominations, though, it seems that nothing else I loved came out that year.
That sounds like I'm damning the game with faint praise, but I heartily recommend spending an evening playing this spooky gem. Preferably with the lights out. Maybe on Halloween.
Honourable Mention: Firewatch
2017: Thimbleweed Park
Ron Gilbert takes advantage of the age of Kickstarter to make a classic point-and-click adventure that just gets more and more delightfully weird the deeper you get into it. All the atmosphere and clever puzzles we remember from Manic Mansion but even better.
Honourable Mention: Detention
2018: Unavowed
... but just when I thought that Thimbleweed Park was my adventure game of the decade, Unavowed came along and combined point-and-click gameplay with a BioWare-style companion system and story choices to make one of my favourite things ever. Amazing.
Honourable Mention: Pillars of Eternity: Deadfire
2019: Untitled Goose Game
The final award of the decade goes to the untitled goose, who doubtless stole it off a table and threw it in a lake. One of those rare games that does what it sets out to do with absolute perfection. Richly deserves to be a cultural phenomenon.
Honourable Mentions: None, the goose took them all.
Anyone else got a list? (You can even put The Witcher on it if you like.)

Blah, arguing about The Witcher is so boring. Let's all make our own best of the decade lists and fight about some games I've actually played instead! Look, here's mine: ... Anyone else got a list? (You can even put The Witcher on it if you like.) Here is my list (in no particular order):
- Shadowrun returns - I love Shadowrun and I think, the video game did a decent job in bringing the p&p rules to life
- Dragon Age 2: My favorite DA game, because Hawke - and Varric
- Dragon Age Inquisition: Because Dragon Age - I love the whole universe. And it was a decent game
- What remains of Edith Finch: a really nice, very atmospheric game
- Star Wars - The Old Republic: The only MMO I had the patience to play. I loved the game and my lekku brigade (I mostly had Twi'lek and Torgrutha characters) and the smuggler story and class was the best. I've met a lot of nice people in that game and even a boyfriend (didn't last long, but still)
- Kingdoms of Amalur: What a great game, I love everything about it - the world, the look, the fighting , the level system. I love it much more than Skyrim, which still overshadows this little gem
- Pillars of Eternity: I haven't finished it yet, but what a great and fun game. I like the companions and the world and the storytelling.
- Dishonoured II: I'm not very successful in this game, but I totally love it. Its beautiful, steampunky look, the characters (I'm playing as Emily)
- Layers of Fear: again, a very atmospheric and very creepy (in a good way) game
- Unavowed: Just discovered this little gem and totally love it
- Dark Souls/Bloodborne: I haven't really played those games, only watch Let's plays (because DS is mess for PC and Bloodborne is PS4 only), but I love the lore, look and storytelling of those games. It's very lovecraftian. I got some inspirations for my own stories from those games. And someday, I hope, I will be able to play them.
I don't get the Witcher versus DA fights (I wouldn't really call it discussions in some cases, when a fandom is called shitty), one can love both or neither, it's entirely subjective. Both are good game series with rich lore and interesting characters, both have roots in mythology and legends of our world and are fun to play. Why people have to bash each others fandoms it's beyond me. For example, I'm a Trekkie and still like Star Wars and Babylon 5 (there was a huge discussion going on in the 1990th about Deep Space Nine being a ripoff of Babylon 5 and I love both shows and couldn't care less about those fights)

Blah, arguing about The Witcher is so boring. Let's all make our own best of the decade lists and fight about some games I've actually played instead! Look, here's mine: ... Anyone else got a list? (You can even put The Witcher on it if you like.) Here is my list (in no particular order):
- Shadowrun returns - I love Shadowrun and I think, the video game did a decent job in bringing the p&p rules to life
- Dragon Age Inquisition: Because Dragon Age - I love the whole universe.
For example, I'm a Trekkie and still like Star Wars and Babylon 5 (there was a huge discusiion going on in the 1990th about Deep Space Nine being a ripoff of Babylon 5 and I love both shows and couldn't care less about those fights)
Likewis other than the fac tthey'er both set with a medieval fantasy background the ydont erally have much at all in common. Geralt is ou tther huntin monstres/criminal son his own our charactres in the DA univrese always hav companions with them as he ygo about their work. I think both have their good and bad points. I presonall yprefer DA because I'm no ttha tgrea tat hack and slash games without some sort of backup and I find the companions in DA quite interesting. Shooters I'm OK bu hack and slashers I've always struggled with. Plus another thing I like about DA is becaus eit' sslower pace is it gives you time to think and decide what you're going to do next. I thin kfor me another trait tha tmakes a good game is replayability and by tha tI mean how many times aer you likely to come back t oa gam eto play it again. For me that is a mark of a good game if you feel you wantto com eback through it again as it helps your bank balance as it stops you going off looking for a nwe game to play. I know I must have don ealmos t30 playthroughs o fDAI I think now and I know I've almost done 20 of MEA as I think m ylast one tha tI finished on New Years Day was I think my 17/18th and I was tempted t ojust jump in and start another but I wanted to give one of my Christmas games a go which was NFS Heat s oultimatel ythat's why I didn't but I certainl yplan on going bac kin and playin gsome more again soon. Though I will need t oreinstall it first as I had to remove Andromeda to make space for NFS Heat. I will as ythough tha ta lot of the games I really enjoy I tend t ocome back to though t oenjo yagain by playing different cvharacters different builds or in he case of games like NFSeven different cars perhaps given it's a racing game.

Interesting. In no way did it deserved to win the GOTY award, imo. Also, it's quite possible that today, "tastes" have changed or maybe IGN finally realized that vast emptiness, humping through rocky hills, shard quests and romancing the Bull is no substitution for an engaging game with content and meaningful quests, beautiful vistas aside.
As someone said up post, DA:I had no competition.

Anyone else got a list? (You can even put The Witcher on it if you like.) I'll try: Starcraft II: Wings of Liberty (2010)Real Time Strategy was the first video game genre I got into, back when I was a kid, but I never cared for the meta, APM, build orders, or anything else to do with competitive multiplayer. I played for the campaigns. This game plus Warcraft III have the best RTS campaigns I've ever come across, to the point that it seems pointless to look for anything to match them. Terraria (2011)Minecraft doesn't appeal to me, but the 2D version is a lot prettier as well as more manageable. Best of all, for me, is the built-in progression system: the game is, in essence, about preparing for a series of progressively harder boss fights that propel the action forward. It made for fun co-op multiplayer, back in the day. Crusader Kings 2 (2012)My favorite game ever, most likely. There's just nothing like it: a medieval ruler simulator, grand strategy RPG, and dynamic storyline generator all at once. I have hundreds of hours with it on Steam, far more than with any other game. Suffering the slings and arrows of outrageous fortune while attempting to usurp the throne has never been more fun. Don't Starve (2013)The single player mode is a fun little survival game in its own right, with a distinct art style and powerfully creepy-cute atmosphere. But it is with the multiplayer version that I've spent most of my time with this game. In fact, I'm certain I've spent more time with co-op Don't Starve than with any multiplayer mode in any other game. Endless Legend (2014)If Starcraft II contributed to me losing interest in RTS because I thought I had already found their peak, this game did likewise for the 4X subgenre. It's a fantasy 4X that's not painfully generic, has a large variety of colorful, asymmetric factions, and plays in an overall elegant way. Ori and the Blind Forest (2015)This may be the best-looking game I've ever played, but then I have a weakness for traditional animation, which Ori draws from. The story didn't leave much of an impression on me, unlike with other people, but it's a fun platformer and a feast for the eyes nevertheless. Shadow Tactics: Blades of the Shogun (2016)I enjoyed the Commandos and Desperados games back in the day, and this is like that but sleeker and with a more compelling setting. It's the perfect mix of strategy and puzzle game. Divinity: Original Sin 2 (2017)Back when I played this game, I granted it the title of best RPG I had played to date. It's managed to hold on to it. Like all games, it has its flaws, but there's no major area in which it falters. It's got the best combat and quests of any RPG, and a solid story to match. It's even quite aesthetically pleasing, between the amazing soundtrack and the colorful environments. Northgard (2018)I haven't played a lot of games from 2018, but this one made the best impression. It's basically an RTS/4X hybrid that by its very nature addresses some of the problems I had with the two genres. I wouldn't call it amazing, but essentially it plays slower than an RTS and faster than a 4X, and it's got plenty of co-op content to boot. Disco Elysium (2019)Unique and innovative, certainly. Also, one of the best written RPGs I've come across; only the Sunless games come close. Disco Elysium is bolder, though, and does a much better job of integrating narrative and mechanics. A problem with doing a 'best by year' list is that the best games I've played in some of my weaker years are far behind the second or third best games in stronger ones. For instance, Hollow Knight (2017) would rank above at least half of these games, but it cannot outcompete D:OS2.

Yes, DAI had no competition. Outside of the hardcore DAI fans, no logical person would believe DAI would have won GOTY in 2013 or 2015. DAI had a bland world with telephone pole NPCs....no dynamic weather.....no day/night cycle.....cartoon character villain (The Elder One).....mmo style fetch quest.....poor sidequests design of having all the story told through notes/journals and so on. I am not surprised that in hindsight IGN who gave DAI GOTY in 2014 did not place DAI as one of their best games of 2014 in their most recent list. Hopefully will all the quality games that came out since, DA4 is a much stronger game.
